A Message From the President 

Thank you, 

wonderful 

contributors to 

Northeast Health 

and its affiliates. 

You are truly 

making a difference 

at The Eddy, 

Albany Memorial 

and Samaritan hospitals. 

Through the generosity of 

members of our community, we 

have been able to add nearly 

$19,000 to the Richard C. Rockwell 

Endowment Fund, which provides 

financial assistance to individuals 

who are cared for at the Marjorie 

Doyle Rockwell Center and the 

MDRC DayBreak program. The 

alumni of Samaritan Hospital 

School of Nursing responded 

positively to our appeal for support 

of a Loan Forgiveness Program to 

help recruit new students into the 

school. These are just two of the 

many wonderful examples of the 

generosity of others. 

We plan to increase our educational 

efforts on the benefits of 

planned giving. There are many 

easy ways for donors to receive tax 

benefits and/or income and make 

a contribution to their favorite 

charity. Jim Prout’s article on 

gift annuities in this issue shows 

some of the benefits to both donors 

and organizations. 

People often ask me how they 

can help. The Foundation’s current 

fund-raising priorities are directed 

towards support for patient monitoring 

equipment for both Albany 

Memorial and Samaritan hospitals 

(see article) and expanding our 

Alzheimer’s services. If you or 

others you know would be interested 

in helping with these important 

projects, please contact Deb

Artforms Gallery & Framery Donation 

Benefits the Family Birth Center 

Jan and Gary Weitzman, owners 

of Artforms Gallery & Framery, 

generously donated eight beautifully 

framed impressionist prints to 

the Family Birth Center at Samaritan 

Hospital. The prints are located 

in the patient rooms at the Family 

Birth Center and add to its warm, 

homelike atmosphere. And... the 

positive response from patients has 

been tremendous. 

Jan and Gary opened Artforms 

Gallery & Framery in October 

1997, at 5 New Karner Road in 

Guilderland. The Weitzmans 

have worked with Northeast 

Health to provide prints for 

Samaritan Hospital and other 

Northeast Health affiliates. 

Their unique gallery offers a 

fascinating, eclectic display of 

paintings, drawings, ceramic 

works, glass pieces and a 

variety of other artwork.

Memories Are Made of This 

The Marjorie Doyle Rockwell 

Center’s Third Anniversary Celebration 

was an enormous success, 

raising $18,846 for the center’s 

Richard C. Rockwell Endowment 

Fund. The fund provides financial 

assistance to individuals with 

depleted resources who are using 

the residential or day services at 

the center. The event was held on 

Thursday, September 14, at the 

Pruyn House in Newtonville. 

We would like to extend our 

gratitude to our many generous

Harry and Helen Jasper Memorial Lecture 

Family members were among 

those attending the first annual Harry 

and Helen Jasper Memorial Lecture 

held in the Conklin Conference Room 

at Albany Memorial Hospital on 

October 19. The program, which 

focused on fibromyalgia, was made 

possible by a generous endowment 

established by friends and family 

members to honor the 

memory of Dr. Harry 

Jasper and his wife

will fund

focusing on family

provide scholarships for promising 

nursing students attending 

the Memorial Hospital 

School of Nursing. Marion Luft

Gala 2000 

Gala 2000, an event to benefit 

both Albany Memorial Hospital and 

Samaritan Hospital, was held on 

Friday, October 13, at the Marriott 

in Albany. The highlight of the 

evening was the presentation of the 

Founders’ Awards, presented to 

designees representing both hospital

communities. This year’s awardees 

were: Vincent Monaco, MD, and 

George Hartman from Albany Memorial,

Over $56,000 was raised to 

benefit the purchase of maternal/fetal 

monitoring units at Samaritan and 

critical care patient monitoring units 

at Albany Memorial Hospital. We

Gift Annuity is a Win-Win Situation: 

Donor and Northeast Health Both Benefit

Northeast 

Health Foundation 

offers many methods 

for giving 

which can provide 

life income to the 

donor and a 

substantial gift 

to a program or 

facility of Northeast Health. The 

charitable gift annuity is one of the 

simplest income-producing gifts 

you can make. 

How does a charitable gift 

annuity work, you ask? The donor 

signs an annuity contract with 

Northeast Health Foundation, 

stating the size of the initial gift 

and the percentage for the annual 

payments. The donor then transfers 

the assets (cash or stock) in the 

amount of this initial gift. 


then pays the donor a fixed percent- 

age amount, annually, throughout his 

or her lifetime. Upon the completion 

of the annuity, the balance remaining 

is paid over to Northeast Health to be 

used for one of its programs or 

facilities as the donor stipulated at 

the time of the agreement. 

Recently, a donor to Northeast 

Health established a gift annuity 

with $90,000 and received annuity 

payments throughout his life. Upon 

the completion of the annuity, a gift 

was made honoring his wife to 

support Albany Memorial Hospital. 

Another annuity donor has designated 

the remainder from his 

annuity to benefit the Cancer 

Treatment Center at Samaritan 

Hospital. These gifts are win-win 

situations for both the affiliates of 

Northeast Health and the donors. 

The tax advantages of this type 

of planned gift are as follows: 

• An income tax deduction is 

allowed, based on actuarial 

tables, in the year the annuity 

is established. 

• The donor receives an annuity 

payment for life, based upon the 

value of the initial gift and the 

percentage chosen. 

• The annuity payments are guaranteed 

obligations of Northeast 

Health Foundation and are not 

subject to change or termination 

during the donor’s lifetime. 

• At the completion of the annuity 

contract, Northeast Health 

Foundation is provided with 

a generous gift.
