Imaging Center Holds Open House 

A special open house was held on 

April 28 to celebrate the completion of 

the renovation of The Imaging Center at 

Samaritan Hospital. In addition to tours 

of the center, recognition was given to 

those generous donors who helped make

A Promise to Care: The Eddy Celebrates 75 Years of Rich History 

One of the most important things for children 

growing up is to know that they’re loved 

and that they’ll always be cared for, no matter 

what ... But the promise of care is ageless and 

carries with it comfort beyond our childhood 

years. In fact, it’s something that comes full 

circle as we age. 

For 75 years, The Eddy, a not-for-profit 

network of senior services, has been keeping 

that promise of care. Through three-quarters 

of a century, we’ve been there quietly offering 

innovative, compassionate and high-quality 

care services — for seniors and for the community. 

But did you know that The Eddy actually 

plays a part in the rich history of the Collar City, 

and in fact, has a footnote in American history? 

The Eddy began in 1928 as a 19-bed nursing 

home for the ladies of Troy, but the story of the 

Eddy family and its origins begins a century 

before that ... 

James A. Eddy, for whom The Eddy’s first 

nursing home in Troy was named, was the son 

of Titus Eddy, who moved to Troy in the 1820s. 

A shrewd businessman, Titus established a 

successful printing and ink manufacturing 

business off Oakwood Avenue in the city — 

on what is still known today as Eddy’s Lane. 

Titus invented the formula that eventually 

produced all the ink used to print United States 

currency. He also experimented with other types 

of engraver’s products and soon sold two common 

inks to the U.S. Treasury — a yellow ink 

for printing gold certificates and a green ink 

for silver certificates. 

It was said that Titus would lock himself in 

a room for two weeks every year to manufacture 

the ink for the U.S. currency, mixing enough 

during that one sitting to supply his annual 

$50,000 government contract. No one knew his 

secret formula, including the six men he hired 

at the business. Titus would even purchase 

different ingredients under different names 

to help preserve the secret. 

As a result, Titus accumulated a considerable 

fortune in Troy and lived in what was one of the 

city’s showplaces, a huge colonial home also on 

Eddy’s Lane overlooking the Hudson Valley. 

When Titus died, son James inherited his father’s 

business, along with the secret ink formula. 

A graduate of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, 

James ran the family business successfully 

for more than a quarter of a century, and the 

business grew as Uncle Sam printed more and 

more money. James continued his government 

contracts until 1908. When James died in 1918, 

the secret formula died with him, and his $1 

million-plus estate went to his wife, Elizabeth 

Shields Hart Eddy and daughter, Ruth Hart Eddy. 

In memory of her husband, Elizabeth Shields 

Hart Eddy, who herself was a descendent 

of the very prominent Hart family of Troy, 

provided the funds to establish the James A. 

Eddy Memorial Foundation in 1925. With 

a vision of caring for the aging community, 

the generosity of The Eddy family led to 

the construction of a nursing home in Troy 

intended “primarily for gentlewomen.” And 

it is here where the history of The Eddy, 

as a network, begins. 

Today, that home, the James A. Eddy 

Memorial Geriatric Center, is located on 

Burdett Avenue, the heart of The Eddy’s 

Troy campus. And The Eddy has grown 

into a comprehensive not-for-profit network 

of services, including skilled nursing and 

rehabilitation centers, home care, independent 

retirement and assistive living, Alzheimer’s 

and dozens of other innovative, nationally 

recognized programs. 

Eddy services span 15 counties and touch 

thousands of lives, everyday. Our 1,600 professional 

caregivers help more than 19,000 people 

annually, from active older adults in our retirement 

communities, to those living in need of 

home care services, to the frail or chronically ill 

who require skilled care. 

This year, The Eddy marks its diamond 

anniversary with a year-long celebration, filled 

with exciting events at each of the network’s 

affiliates across the greater Capital Region. We’re 

pleased to share the history of the network and 

the community as we celebrate 75 years of 

growth, innovation and the promise of care.

You Can Make a Gift and Increase Your Income! 

The charitable gift annuity, designed for 

older donors and beneficiaries, is among the 

oldest, simplest and most popular methods of 

making a gift that also provides income. 

As its name reveals, a gift annuity is part gift 

and part investment. A charitable gift annuity 

is created through a simple contract between the 

donor and Northeast Health. The gift annuity 

provides a fixed income to the donor and/or 

another beneficiary; the annuity payments are 

the direct obligation of Northeast Health and 

are paid either quarterly, semi-annually or 

annually. The gift annuity is for those who 

want to make a gift and also want to ensure 

income for their lifetime. 

Recently, a long-time supporter of Samaritan 

Hospital chose to use the gift annuity to support 

the hospital. With a gift of $10,000 based on the 

donor’s age (87), this donor is receiving a fixed 

annuity of 11.1 percent which provides $1,132 

annual income. This donor used stock that 

had a very low cost basis, less than $100 and

timing of your gift and the exact age of the donor and/or spouse 

at the time of the gift.

allowed this donor to make the gift to Samaritan 

for a special project, increase her income 

and save on capital gains tax. 

Gift annuity rates depend on the age of the 

donor and beneficiaries as well as the timing of 

the gift. If you’ve reached the wonderful age of

would like to increase your annual income,

Meet Kurt Kent 

Albany Memorial 

Hospital volunteer, Kurt 

Kent, Jr., is a retiree of 

Mobil Oil Corporation. The 

hospital not only receives 

the gift of Kurt’s time but 

also benefits from a unique 

grant program offered by 

Mobil Foundation, Inc. 

The Mobil Volunteer Program (MVP) Star recognizes 

Mobil employees, retirees, spouses, domestic 

partners and dependent children who volunteer at 

least 40 hours annually in the community. Thanks 

to Kurt, for the past two years, the hospital has 

received two $500 grants as a result of the program. 

Born and raised in Bronx, New York, Kurt 

graduated from high school and joined the Navy. 

After leaving the service, he married and then 

pursued his bachelor’s degree in marketing. He 

worked for 30 years as a sales representative for 

Mobil Oil Corporation, during which time he 

was relocated to Albany. 

Kurt needed something to keep him busy after 

retiring over nine years ago. He started volunteering 

as a fund-raiser with the American Red Cross. 

After losing his wife to breast cancer, Kurt became 

very involved with the American Cancer Society 

participating in breast cancer walks and fundraisers. 

In 1996, he started volunteering at Albany 

Memorial Hospital. Kurt finds that volunteering 

provides him an opportunity to give something 

back for all of the good things he has in his life. 

Kurt volunteers on Friday mornings as an 

escort at the hospital and also tries to fill in 

where he is needed. He especially enjoys escorting 

patients on Fridays because most of them are 

happy to be going home for the weekend. He 

advises patients who have been told by their 

physicians to rest for the weekend, to keep a 

bell by their bedside to ring for help. He recently 

purchased a wreath covered with small bells and 

plans to cut them off to give to patients as they 

leave for home. 

Kurt is president of Mobil/Exxon Annuities, 

a social group comprised of Mobil and Exxon 

retirees. He and his significant other, Florence, 

occupy their time with 16 grandchildren, 

golfing and traveling. 

Kudos to Albany Memorial Hospital’s 

Congestive Heart Failure Program 

In the spring, Albany Memorial Hospital 

received the 2003 Patient Safety Award from the 

New York State Department of Health and State 

Health Commissioner Antonia C. Novello, MD, 

MPH, Dr. PH, for the hospital’s Coordinated Care 

Management Program, part of The Heart Program, 

an innovative outpatient program for patients with 

congestive heart failure (CHF). 

The award included a $200,000 state grant 

to work with the Department of Health to promote 

strategies to reduce medical errors by 

healthcare providers in New York State. 

Northeast Health’s Coordinated Care Management 

Program utilizes the many services 

offered by our network, and is designed to 

insure that CHF patients receive coordinated 

care from diagnosis to day-to-day management 

of their condition.

I wanted to write and thank you for the wonderful jewelry that I won as the winner of the “Million 

Dollar Jewel Give Away.” I am an RN in Dr. Martin Echt’s office and he invited me to this wonderful party 

as his guest. That would have been lovely enough, but to win the door prize really put a cap on my evening. I owe so much 

to Northeast Health already - they gave me a scholarship to the Samaritan Hospital School of Nursing when I was a home health 

aide at the Eddy VNA and enabled me to become a nurse. Words alone cannot convey what I owe to this great organization!

Cuisine Magic 2003 

The magic continues... The Eddy’s 10th 

annual culinary competition, grand-tasting and 

fundraising gala, Cuisine Magic 2003 was held 

on Sunday, March 2, at the Empire State Plaza 

Convention Center in Albany. Chefs from eight 

area restaurants competed in the American 

Culinary Federation approved competition. 

The event raised more than $41,300 to 

benefit several Eddy Visiting Nurse Association 

initiatives, including: care team programs, which 

provide non-medical support services to seniors 

and other home care patients; the Home Health 

Aide Career Ladder Program, a unique career 

advancement and recognition program for home 

health aides which offers opportunities for 

further professional training and development of 

care skills; and charity care in our region.

Esther Rappold, clinical resource management 

assistant at Albany Memorial, is greeted by Paul
