Box 5 New streams of fund<strong>in</strong>g for malaria control<br />
International fund<strong>in</strong>g for combat<strong>in</strong>g malaria has <strong>in</strong>creased<br />
dramatically over the last several years. Key<br />
donors are highlighted below.<br />
The Global Fund to Fight AIDS,<br />
Tuberculosis <strong>and</strong> <strong>Malaria</strong><br />
The Global Fund was created <strong>in</strong> 2002 to dramatically<br />
<strong>in</strong>crease fund<strong>in</strong>g to support <strong>in</strong>tegrated approaches<br />
to prevention <strong>and</strong> treatment. The Global Fund is a<br />
partnership among governments, multilateral <strong>and</strong> bilateral<br />
organizations, the private sector <strong>and</strong> communities.<br />
Between 2002 <strong>and</strong> 2007 The Global Fund has<br />
committed over $1.7 billion for malaria programs <strong>in</strong><br />
more than 76 recipient countries. More <strong>in</strong>formation is<br />

The World Bank’s <strong>Malaria</strong><br />
Control Booster Program<br />
The programme is a 10-year commitment to br<strong>in</strong>g<strong>in</strong>g<br />
malaria under control across Africa; it began <strong>in</strong><br />
September 2005. Over its first phase (2005–2008)<br />
16 projects <strong>in</strong> 15 countries <strong>and</strong> one major cross-border<br />
region have been approved by the World Bank’s<br />
board of directors. Together they reflect an eightfold<br />
<strong>in</strong>crease <strong>in</strong> World Bank fund<strong>in</strong>g for malaria control<br />
<strong>in</strong> Africa s<strong>in</strong>ce 2005, with total commitments<br />
of about $420 million now available for countries to<br />
scale up malaria control efforts. The second phase<br />
(2008–2015) is now under design. More <strong>in</strong>formation<br />

The U.S. President’s <strong>Malaria</strong> Initiative<br />
The <strong>in</strong>itiative was established <strong>in</strong> 2005 with the goal<br />
of reduc<strong>in</strong>g malaria mortality by 50 per cent <strong>in</strong> 15 target<br />
countries <strong>in</strong> sub- Saharan Africa. It is a $1.2 billion<br />
five-year <strong>in</strong>itiative (2005–2010) coord<strong>in</strong>ated with national<br />
control programmes <strong>and</strong> other <strong>in</strong>ternational donors.<br />

The Bill <strong>and</strong> Mel<strong>in</strong>da Gates Foundation<br />
The foundation works to improve health <strong>and</strong> reduce<br />
poverty <strong>in</strong> develop<strong>in</strong>g countries. In 2006 the Gates<br />
Foundation committed $83.5 million <strong>in</strong> new malaria<br />
grants. This fund<strong>in</strong>g supports malaria prevention <strong>and</strong><br />
treatment programmes as well as research <strong>and</strong> development.<br />

A number of other donors, such as UNITAID (the International<br />
Drug Purchase Facility), have also contributed<br />
to the significant <strong>in</strong>crease <strong>in</strong> the <strong>in</strong>ternational<br />
fund<strong>in</strong>g directed towards malaria control. Other major<br />
donors, such as the Canadian International Development<br />
Agency, may also direct funds more broadly towards<br />
improv<strong>in</strong>g child survival, which would <strong>in</strong>clude<br />
fund<strong>in</strong>g for malaria control activities.
