Look<strong>in</strong>g forward—<br />
key actions to achieve<br />
global malaria goals<br />
The previous sections show<br />
that many countries have<br />
rapidly absorbed significant<br />
additional resources directed<br />
towards malaria control<br />
activities <strong>and</strong> are adopt<strong>in</strong>g<br />
successful strategies for<br />
scal<strong>in</strong>g up malaria control<br />
<strong>in</strong>tervention <strong>coverage</strong>,<br />
particularly for <strong>in</strong>secticidetreated<br />
nets. Several new<br />
tools developed us<strong>in</strong>g these<br />
additional resources are mak<strong>in</strong>g<br />
a difference <strong>in</strong> the fight<br />
aga<strong>in</strong>st malaria (for example,<br />
long-last<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>secticidal nets).<br />
The impressive ga<strong>in</strong>s made across numerous<br />
sub- Saharan African countries <strong>in</strong><br />
scal<strong>in</strong>g up the <strong>coverage</strong> of these key<br />
malaria control <strong>in</strong>terventions shows that<br />
major progress can be achieved <strong>and</strong><br />
<strong>in</strong> a short period of time. Despite this<br />
progress, though, sub- Saharan African<br />
countries are still fall<strong>in</strong>g short of global<br />
malaria goals. In addition, the limited<br />
progress <strong>in</strong> exp<strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>g treatment <strong>coverage</strong><br />
across sub- Saharan Africa s<strong>in</strong>ce 2000<br />
<strong>and</strong> the large proportion of febrile <strong>children</strong><br />
still be<strong>in</strong>g treated with less effective<br />
antimalarial medic<strong>in</strong>es underscore<br />
the urgent need to strengthen activities<br />
that will lead to higher <strong>coverage</strong> rates<br />
with more effective malaria treatment.<br />
Enhanced commitments <strong>and</strong> bolder<br />
efforts will therefore be needed for countries<br />
to meet these ambitious <strong>in</strong>ternational<br />
goals <strong>and</strong> targets.<br />
Key actions needed to achieve global<br />
malaria goals <strong>in</strong>clude:<br />
• Further strengthen<strong>in</strong>g political <strong>and</strong><br />
f<strong>in</strong>ancial commitments.<br />
• Provid<strong>in</strong>g clear <strong>and</strong> timely policy<br />
guidance.<br />
• Integrat<strong>in</strong>g malaria control <strong>in</strong>to<br />
exist<strong>in</strong>g maternal <strong>and</strong> child health<br />
programmes.<br />
• Strengthen<strong>in</strong>g partnerships <strong>and</strong> harmoniz<strong>in</strong>g<br />
efforts.<br />
• Exp<strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>g social <strong>and</strong> behaviour<br />
change communication.<br />
• Improv<strong>in</strong>g forecast<strong>in</strong>g, procurement<br />
<strong>and</strong> supply cha<strong>in</strong> management for<br />
malaria commodities.<br />
• Strengthen<strong>in</strong>g monitor<strong>in</strong>g systems for<br />
evidence-based programm<strong>in</strong>g.<br />
Further strengthen<strong>in</strong>g political<br />
<strong>and</strong> f<strong>in</strong>ancial commitments<br />
The more than tenfold <strong>in</strong>crease <strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>ternational<br />
fund<strong>in</strong>g for malaria control<br />
over the past decade is a testament to the<br />
strong commitment to combat<strong>in</strong>g malaria.<br />
32 But more resources are still needed<br />
to further <strong>in</strong>crease malaria <strong>in</strong>tervention<br />
<strong>coverage</strong> <strong>and</strong> to achieve global malaria<br />
goals. Fund<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>creases would support<br />
countries as they roll out more effective<br />
