Annual ra<strong>in</strong>fall also directly <strong>in</strong>fluences range<br />

conditions <strong>and</strong>, thus, graz<strong>in</strong>g pressure by<br />

domestic livestock. Unless l<strong>and</strong>owners <strong>and</strong><br />

managers adjust stock<strong>in</strong>g rates or graz<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>in</strong>tensity on rangel<strong>and</strong>s dur<strong>in</strong>g droughts, white<strong>tailed</strong><br />

deer populations suffer. Competition<br />

between livestock <strong>and</strong> white-<strong>tailed</strong> deer for<br />

available forage will occur as food <strong>and</strong> cover<br />

resources dim<strong>in</strong>ish. Dur<strong>in</strong>g periods of drought,<br />

<strong>in</strong>creased consumption of browse by livestock<br />

may reduce <strong>the</strong> availability of important<br />

seasonal forage for white-<strong>tailed</strong> deer.<br />

The impoundment of water for domestic livestock<br />

has produced one of <strong>the</strong> most important<br />

changes to <strong>the</strong> l<strong>and</strong>scape of <strong>the</strong> <strong>Cross</strong> <strong>Timbers</strong><br />

<strong>and</strong> Prairies Region <strong>and</strong> has <strong>in</strong>creased <strong>the</strong><br />

potential of <strong>the</strong> l<strong>and</strong> to susta<strong>in</strong> populations of<br />

white-<strong>tailed</strong> deer <strong>and</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r wildlife species.<br />

The countless number of lakes, small ponds<br />

<strong>and</strong> stock tanks constructed as water sources<br />

for domestic livestock <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Cross</strong> <strong>Timbers</strong> <strong>and</strong><br />

Prairies Region also serve as important seasonal<br />

sources of water for white-<strong>tailed</strong> deer <strong>and</strong><br />

o<strong>the</strong>r wildlife species. However, <strong>the</strong> availability<br />

of water depends on runoff of surface water<br />

from heavy ra<strong>in</strong>fall events. With <strong>the</strong> exception<br />

of <strong>the</strong> major rivers that cross <strong>the</strong> region, most<br />

streams <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Cross</strong> <strong>Timbers</strong> <strong>and</strong> Prairies<br />

Region are <strong>in</strong>termittent <strong>and</strong> do not provide<br />

reliable surface water. Dur<strong>in</strong>g years of below<br />

average ra<strong>in</strong>fall, many water sources become<br />

dry, directly affect<strong>in</strong>g white-<strong>tailed</strong> deer <strong>and</strong><br />

o<strong>the</strong>r wildlife species.<br />

Extremes <strong>in</strong> temperature <strong>and</strong> ra<strong>in</strong>fall patterns<br />

affect white-<strong>tailed</strong> deer habitat <strong>and</strong> cannot be<br />

controlled by l<strong>and</strong> managers, only anticipated.<br />

They will occur <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Cross</strong> <strong>Timbers</strong> <strong>and</strong><br />

Prairies Region of Texas as <strong>the</strong>y have for eons.<br />

L<strong>and</strong> managers should consider <strong>the</strong> likelihood<br />

that <strong>the</strong>se events will occur <strong>and</strong> make appropriate<br />

decisions dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>itial plann<strong>in</strong>g<br />

stages of white-<strong>tailed</strong> deer habitat <strong>and</strong> population<br />

management strategies.<br />

The countless number of lakes, small ponds <strong>and</strong> stock tanks constructed as water sources for domestic<br />

livestock <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Cross</strong> <strong>Timbers</strong> <strong>and</strong> Prairies Region also serve as important seasonal sources of water for<br />
