THE CROSS TIMBERS AND PRAIRIES REGION<br />
The <strong>Cross</strong> <strong>Timbers</strong> <strong>and</strong> Prairie Region encompasses<br />
approximately 26,000 square miles <strong>in</strong><br />
Northcentral Texas. It is bordered on <strong>the</strong> east<br />
by <strong>the</strong> Blackl<strong>and</strong> Prairie, <strong>the</strong> west by <strong>the</strong><br />
Roll<strong>in</strong>g Pla<strong>in</strong>s <strong>and</strong> extends south <strong>and</strong> southwestward<br />
to <strong>the</strong> Llano Bas<strong>in</strong> <strong>and</strong> Edwards<br />
Plateau <strong>in</strong> central Texas. It can be fur<strong>the</strong>r subdivided<br />
<strong>in</strong>to four vegetative subregions: East<br />
<strong>Cross</strong> <strong>Timbers</strong>, Fort Worth Prairie, Lampasas<br />
Cut Pla<strong>in</strong> <strong>and</strong> West <strong>Cross</strong> <strong>Timbers</strong>. This broad<br />
vegetative region also extends northward <strong>in</strong>to<br />
Oklahoma <strong>and</strong> sou<strong>the</strong>rn Kansas. (Figure 1 -<br />
Diggs et. al. 1999).<br />
