Did I ever tell
you I love to ride?
I mean, I really love
to ride. And that’s a
good thing. Because
with this job of mine I
spend a lot of time on
two wheels. This year
I expect to log more
than 35,000 miles on
my bikes. I just picked
up a new Road Glide ®
Ultra and have been
having a lot of fun
on it.
As I write this,
I’m just finishing
Motoring the Mother Road, the 2010 H.O.G. tour of Route
66, America’s Mother Road. Between Chicago, Illinois and
Los Angeles, California, several hundred enthusiastic H.O.G.
members and I added more than 2,300 miles to our 2010 riding
totals. And when I’m done, I’m going to turn right around and
head for Tampa to complete an Iron Butt Ride along the way.
Now, whenever we here at “corporate” Harley-Davidson talk
about riding long distances in short amounts of time, we have
to be very careful. This sort of riding is not for everyone — and
there are definitely risks involved. But there are also ways to
do it safely. So if you choose to take on such a challenge, make
sure you know what you’re getting into and prepare properly.
And remember: don’t try this at home! (Because riding around
your house for 1,000 miles gets really boring really fast!)
Seriously, if long-distance riding is something you’re
interested in, take a look at our “Between the Lines” feature in
this issue (Pages 24-25), where expert endurance rider Chris
Carr shares some of the secrets to his success. Perhaps more
importantly, he relates what he’s learned on his endurance
adventures to more “everyday” rides. So even if you’re not out
to break any records, you’re sure to learn something you can
put to use on your next big ride.
But the best thing about spending so much time on my
motorcycle is that I get to meet so many amazing H.O.G.
members along the way. And I hope to meet many more of you
at the exciting events we’re planning for 2011. So if you happen
to see a 2011 Road Glide ® Ultra with a custom painted skeleton
intact, make sure to throw me a wave.
Now if you’ll excuse me, my bike is calling my name. We have
a date to ride 100 miles before breakfast.
