Sixth Int’l Symposium on Artichoke,<br />
Cardoon and Their Wild Relatives<br />

The VI International Symposium on<br />
Artichoke, Cardoon and Their Wild Relatives<br />
was held in Lorca (Murcia, Spain) on 28-31<br />
March 2006. The event was organized by the<br />
Technical University of Cartagena (UPCT) and<br />
the Murcian Institute of Research and Agri-food<br />
Development (IMIDA). Dr. Juan A. Fernández<br />
and Ir. Regino Aragón organized and convened<br />
the Symposium. More than 120 participants<br />
from 12 countries attended 35 oral and 45 poster<br />
presentations. The Symposium focused on<br />
eight topics, namely, Plant Material, Breeding<br />
and Biotechnology, Crop Physiology, Production<br />

Participants in the Centro Integrado de Formación y Experiencias Agrarias, Lorca.<br />
Technology, Water and Nutrient Management,<br />
Crop Protection, Post-harvest Technology,<br />
Product Quality and Marketing and<br />
Consumption. A round table discussion with<br />
key representatives from the artichoke fresh<br />
market and processing industry, production and<br />
research sectors addressed critical issues on<br />
consumption and marketing. In addition, a<br />
technical all-day tour included visits to main<br />
artichoke field cultivation areas, fresh-market<br />
and processing facilities of the Lorca Region.<br />
The Mediterranean Basin produces more than<br />
80% of the total world production of artichokes,<br />
which represents 65.8% for the EU.<br />
The principal producing country is Italy, followed<br />
by Spain, Argentina, Egypt and France.<br />
