Writing<br />
EWRV.01 - write in a variety of forms, adopting a voice suitable to the intended audience;<br />
EWRV.02 - use the writing process independently to produce a final written or electronic version of an<br />
essay or a piece of creative writing;<br />
EWRV.03 - organize and link ideas logically and effectively in written texts, such as narratives and<br />
essays;<br />
EWRV.04 - use the sentence patterns of standard Canadian English in their writing with a degree of<br />
accuracy necessary for continued success in subject classrooms at the college and/or university<br />
preparation level;<br />
EWR1.02 - write creatively in a variety of forms;<br />
EWR2.01 - use a variety of connecting words and phrases to express logical relationships between and<br />
among ideas;<br />
EWR2.02 - use a variety of strategies to proofread, edit, and correct writing, focusing on effective style,<br />
relevant and interesting content, accurate spelling, and correct use of conventions;<br />
EWR2.03 - publish written work, selecting a format suited to the intended audience and using technology<br />
such as graphics and desk top publishing software, as appropriate;<br />
EWR3.01 - use a variety of spelling strategies, rules, and patterns to spell words correctly.<br />
Prior Knowledge & Skills<br />

Planning Notes<br />
Introductory Activities<br />
• For an example of an introductory activity, see the Name Game in the ESLCO profile. The activity,<br />
described in Strategies 3 and 4, is also designed to assist students in getting to know one another.<br />
• Prepare a course outline for students, using the course overview charts and including the major foci<br />
of the course and the tasks and assessments for each unit.<br />
Independent Novel Study<br />
• Book the library/resource centre. Set a date for the library staff to give a brief book talk on books that<br />
explore the themes of choices and identity.<br />
• Prepare a class set of the Appendix 1A – Book Log.<br />
Poetry<br />
• Select a song on the theme of choices, a poem on the theme of identity, and a poem on the theme of<br />
choices. Select the song and poems carefully to ensure that they contain examples of literary<br />
language and symbolism. See Resources for suggestions of poetry anthologies.<br />
• Obtain a tape or CD of the song and a copy of the song’s lyrics.<br />
