Das Tor zum Allgäu
Mit Pauken und Trompeten ziehen die Memminger dieses Jahr wieder
durch ihre historische Altstadt, vorbei an den vielen Bürgerhäusern,
barocken Palazzi bis zum mittelalterlichen Marktplatz. Säbel
klirren, Pferdehufe klappern, Gaukler begeistern Groß und Klein.
Alle vier Jahre verkleidet sich ganz Memmingen und taucht ins Mittelalter
ein. 2012 ist es wieder so weit: Vom 29. Juli bis 5. August finden
im Unterallgäu wieder die Wallenstein-Festspiele statt. Mit über
4.500 Mitwirkenden sind sie das größte Historienfestspiel Europas.
Anschließend locken die zahlreichen Wanderwege in den verschiedensten
Höhenlagen des Allgäus (z. B. rund um das Nebelhorn),
sanfte Hügelketten, das gebirgige Alpenvorland, klare Bergseen
und die Märchenschlösser Neuschwanstein und Hohenschwangau.
Wer seine Ausdauer trainieren will, macht sich per Nordic Walking
auf die Strecke. Und Familien verbringen ihren Urlaub gern auf
einem der vielen Bauernhöfe, wie dem Bichler-Hof im Bergdörfchen
Bichel inmitten typischer Allgäuer Landschaft mit Blick ins bezaubernde
Wertachtal. Auch im Winter hat das „Tor zum Allgäu“ viel
zu bieten. Deutschlands größtes Wintersportzentrum verfügt über
500 Kilometer Piste für den alpinen Skisport, 35 Bergbahnen, 223
Liftanlagen sowie ein ausgedehntes Loipennetz. Schneesicher ist
die Region den ganzen Winter. Alleine Oberstdorf investiert jährlich
rund neun Millionen Euro in die Beschneiung und stellt den Betrieb
der längsten (ca. 7,5 km) Abfahrt Deutschlands sicher.

The gateway to
the Allgäu region
To the sound of fanfare and trumpets the people of Memmingen
will once again be making their way through their historical Old
Town, past the many town houses and baroque palaces to the
medieval market square. Sabres clinking, horse hooves clacking,
entertainers keeping young and old happy. Every four years Memmingen
dresses up and goes back to the Middle Ages. And this
time has come again in 2012: from 29 July until 5 August the Wallenstein
Festival will be taking place in the lower Allgäu region.
With over 4500 participants, this is the biggest historical festival
in Europe. Afterwards visitors will be tempted by the many hiking
paths at various altitudes of the Allgäu, e.g. around the Nebelhorn
mountain, gently sloping hills, the mountainous Alpine foothills,
clear alpine lakes and the fairytale castles Neuschwanstein and
Hohenschwangau. If you want to build up your stamina, you can
try Nordic walking. And families will enjoy spending their holidays
at one of the many farmhouses, like the Bichler Hof in the mountain
village of Bichel, nestled in the typical Allgäu countryside with
views of the captivating Wertach Valley. And the “gateway to the
Allgäu” even has a lot to offer in winter. Germany’s biggest winter
sports centre has over 500 kilometres of slopes for Alpine skiing,
35 cable cars, 223 lifts and an extensive skiing trail network. Snow is
guaranteed in the region throughout the whole winter. Oberstdorf
alone invests around 9 million euros every year in artificial snow
and ensures the smooth running of Germany’s longest (approx. 7.5
km) ski slope.
