Chapter 4 Fourth generation 1869 - 1907 Louisa Harrop née Furlong and Edmund Harrop Louisa Jane Furlong was born on 10th February 1866 at Shicer Gully, near Guildford in Central Victoria. Her mother was not quite 16 years old, the eldest daughter of John Furlong, an immigrant from Mauritius and Sarah Belcher. After her mother’s death in 1871, when she was 5 years old, she was looked after by her father and her 9 year old aunt, Mary Ann Belcher, with the help of some of the Italian and Mauritian neighbours. It is not clear what education she received, but she almost certainly attended the State school at Tarilta (formerly Kangaroo) until old enough to leave.
