FOURTH GENERATION 1869 - 1907 Figure 4.1: Louisa Harrop, daughter of Sarah Furlong née Belcher and niece of William Belcher moved to live in 15 Pickett Street Footscray, where she was to stay 51 years - the rest of her life. Her father had died at Castlemaine in 1895. Her husband died on 15th April 1917, leaving her a widow, with a now grown up son, Frank Edmund, a glass worker, who had been born in Footscray in 1896 and was now 21 years old. He later married, and he with his wife and family shared the house until Louisa died in Footscray on 24th July 1945. Clarice Dora Fox née Furlong Dora Clarice Furlong was born on 20th November, 1870, at Shicer Gully, near Guildford in Central Victoria, the youngest daughter of John Furlong, an immigrant from Mauritius and Sarah Belcher. After her mother’s death the following year, when she was less than six months old, she was looked after by her father and her 9 year old aunt, Mary Ann Belcher, with the help of some of the Italian and Mauritian neighbours. It is not clear what education she received, but she almost certainly attended the State school at Tarilta, until old enough to leave. In 1890, at the age of 20, she married Joseph Fox, born about 1868, one of quite a large family living in the district. They eventually settled down in South Gippsland

They had seven children: Ada, Mary Irene “Tot”, Ethel, Edwin, Alma, Doris and Vanice Amy “Trixie”, three of whom, Edwin, Ethel and Trixie had predeceased her. Her husband died in 1931 at Wonthaggi, Victoria, and she herself died there on 23rd October 1963. Fred Belcher Fred Belcher was born at Miepoll East on 6th January 1887, the eldest son of William Belcher and Ellen née Jamieson. During his childhood he lived firstly in the original selectionhomeatMiepollEast, onthebanksoftheMiddleCreek. Hisearlyeducation was at Miepoll East State School, No. 2911, where he and his sister Ada were among the first pupils to enrol. After living for a few years at “Rothesay”, at Rigg’s Creek in Moglonemby, the family moved, after his fath had been confined to hospital, to Euroa in 1901. They lived in Kirkland Street East on the Seven Creeks up from the Sydney Road. Fred became the “man of the house” at the age of 14. At the age of about 16, he travelled up to Kyogle in Northern New South Wales where he worked for his uncle, John Wade, and learnt the art of farming. When the family returned to the land and re-settled at “Rothesay”, at Rigg’s Creek in 1909, he, with his mother and younger
