Kieran scores
with the BBC
A sports fanatic had extra cause for celebration after
landing a job with the BBC while still studying at UCLan.
Kieran Crowley secured the role with the
national broadcaster before he graduated in the
summer of 2011 with a BA(Hons) in Sports
Journalism from the School of Journalism, Media
and Communication.
The ambitious alumnus secured the sought after
position of reporter for BBC Sport Online on the
back of a two month work placement through
the BBC Blast scheme, which aims to harness
talent in young people.
A life-long West Bromwich Albion FC fan, he said:
“Since hearing John Motson on the radio when I
was younger I’ve always wanted to work in sports
journalism. It’s great to get a job with the
prestigious BBC straight out of the University.”
He developed a keen interest in
broadcast as well as online journalism
during his three year course. Whilst at
University he co-presented a football show
on UCLan Students’ Union radio station
called ‘Late Kick Off’ and was named the
Breakthrough Broadcaster of the Year
at the UCLan Students’ Union Awards.
His other sporting passions include boxing,
cricket, hurling and non-league football.
Kieran said: “I am very passionate about radio
and hopefully working at the BBC will provide
many opportunities to develop my career. I’ve
already written over 80 stories for the BBC
during my placement as well as freelancing for
www.goal.com.
“My degree has given me solid grounding in
essential journalistic skills and experience as well
as allowing me to study sports specific modules.
Now I am just keen to get as much
experience as possible and see
where my career takes me.”
