Sporting chance
UCLan is awarded over £100,000 by Sport England to help
increase the number of students participating in sport. The funding
is part of a new initiative to get more students more active, more
often, as Sport England recognises that university students bridge
the gap between school and adulthood – where children tend to
drop out of sport. 22
Unique science honour for UCLan academic
Professor Jaipaul Singh becomes the first UCLan academic to
receive the prestigious Doctor of Science degree (DSc). The award
recognises his lifetime’s work on ‘mechanisms associated with
secretory and contractile responses in tissues and cells of the body
in health and disease’. As a pioneer and world-leading authority in
his field, Professor Singh has published more than 190 papers,
is editor of three journals and collaborates with 16 universities
on three different continents.

UCLan Sports Arena hosts national athletics event
UCLan’s Sports Arena plays host to over 300 disabled athletes
who take part in the Nationwide Junior Athletics Championships.
The event, in which new and recognised young stars take part,
is a national competition renowned for developing future
paralympians. 24

Overnight best seller
Only three weeks after it was published, UCLan Journalism
graduate Kerry Wilkinson sees his first novel, ‘Locked In’, outsell
top names like Stieg Larsson via two electronic book stores.
His literary work reaches the top 10 chart on iTunes and is in the
top 20 crime and thrillers list on Amazon. 25
Top marks for student satisfaction
For the fourth year in a row, UCLan reaches its National Student
Survey satisfaction benchmark by achieving an overall satisfaction
rating of 82 percent. The subject areas of Fine Art, Tourism,
Transport and Travel, Media Studies, Sports Science, Drama, and
Law are all ranked in top 25 percent nationally. 26
Dentistry couple bridge the gap
A husband and wife dentistry duo who first met at university
12 years ago hit the academic trail again at UCLan’s School of
Postgraduate Medical and Dental Education.
Nigel Kirk is now studying for his second Master’s degree in
Aesthetic Dental Implantology while his wife Alice is undertaking
an MSc in Oral Surgery. 27
Samurai warriors fight another day
Dr Michael Wysocki, a leading forensic anthropologist from the
School of Forensic and Investigative Sciences, investigates battle
wounds sustained by medieval Japanese warriors almost 700
years ago.
Working with Japanese colleagues, he finds evidence of sword and
arrow wounds, ritualised coup de grace death blows, and even
evidence of samurai heads being taken as trophies by their
enemies. The newly analysed evidence, presented in a special
Channel 4 documentary, sheds important new light on the origins
of Japan’s samurai warrior tradition. 28

World-leading astronomers gather at UCLan
UCLan hosts the prestigious International Astronomical Union (IAU)
Symposium which sees some of the world’s leading astronomy
experts converge at the University to present ground-breaking
research findings. The Symposium focuses on the nature of the light
emitted by galaxies and their fundamental physical processes.
As a measure of the University’s standing in the astronomy field,
only two institutions in the UK have been given the privilege of
running two IAU conferences in the last ten years; the University
of Oxford and now UCLan. 29
UCLan teams up for the 2014 Winter Olympics
A group of students from UCLan’s Centre for Volunteering and
Community Leadership and UCLanSport return from Russia having
lent their support to the 2014 Winter Olympics.
At a youth leadership conference held in the city of Sochi, the
Black Sea resort that will host the games in 2014, the students
deliver a peer-led workshop focusing on the common values of
peer education and youth participation. They also give a series of
presentations demonstrating their experience of community-led
projects developed at UCLan. 30
World-class science facility officially opens
UCLan’s new purpose-built JB Firth Building, supporting the
expansion of courses and research programmes in forensic science,
fire engineering and chemistry, opens for business.
The £12.5 million facility is named after one of the country’s
founders of forensic science Dr James Brierley Firth, and his
descendants are invited as guests of honour to formally open
the building and tour the facilities. 31
