Olympic torch shines at UCLan<br />
As part <strong>of</strong> a search to find inspirational students to carry the<br />
world-famous beacon <strong>of</strong> light during the national torch relay,<br />
the Coca-Cola Olympic Torch Tour arrives at UCLan.<br />
Students are photographed with the iconic golden torch and<br />
nominate inspirational students who they believe should be<br />
celebrated through the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. 32<br />
Antiques enthusiasts learn tricks <strong>of</strong> the trade<br />
At a special event to help promote UCLan’s unique part-time<br />
distance learning Master’s Degree in Antiques, enthusiasts from<br />
across the North West are taught the tips <strong>of</strong> buying and selling<br />
which they then put to use in valuation and mock auction games. 33<br />
Showcase for undergraduate research internships<br />
Fifty research projects, undertaken by student interns on UCLan’s<br />
highly popular Undergraduate Research Internship Scheme, are<br />
showcased at an academic poster exhibition. Afton Turner is<br />
named the winner <strong>of</strong> the best poster. The final year Biomedical<br />
Sciences student was chosen for her research into using yeast as<br />
an in-vitro screening tool to identify compounds which have<br />
potential applications in cancer therapy. 34<br />
Jacqueline Wilson Literary Festival success<br />
Over 500 school children from across the UK descend on UCLan<br />
for the first ever Jacqueline Wilson Literary Festival. The two-day<br />
event, for children aged 9-16, includes competitions, prizes, book<br />
clubs, an academic conference and public events with Jacqueline<br />
Wilson and illustrator Nick Sharratt.<br />
Ten <strong>of</strong> the Jacqueline Wilson Literary Festival competition winners<br />
spend a morning training to be journalists with UCLan’s journalism<br />
tutors before putting their skills to the test at a press conference<br />
featuring Jacqueline and Nick. 35<br />
November<br />
New sports centre named in honour <strong>of</strong><br />
football legend<br />
UCLan’s Sir Tom Finney Sports Centre is <strong>of</strong>ficially opened. Sir Tom’s<br />
son Brian Finney and daughter Barbara Herbert are present at the<br />
opening, along with UCLan Honorary Fellow and BBC Football<br />
pundit, Mark Lawrenson. 36<br />
EvoFIT recognised in major awards<br />
Dr Charlie Frowd’s EvoFIT s<strong>of</strong>tware system, created by UCLan and<br />
the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Stirling, wins the <strong>University</strong> Excellence Competition<br />
category at the UK Trade and Investment event TechWorld.<br />
The revolutionary facial composite system developed in <strong>Lancashire</strong><br />
and used by police forces around the world to catch criminals is<br />
also shortlisted in the ‘Research Project <strong>of</strong> the Year’ category at the<br />
Times Higher Education Awards. 37<br />
UCLan appoints new Entrepreneur in Residence<br />
In a move that will further enhance the <strong>University</strong>’s strong links<br />
with UK industry, UCLan appoints Philip Dyer, chairman <strong>of</strong> NXO<br />
and regional president <strong>of</strong> <strong>Lancashire</strong>’s Chartered Institute <strong>of</strong><br />
Marketing, as the first ever Entrepreneur in Residence at UCLan.<br />
In the new role, Philip will provide students and start-up<br />
businesses with support sessions, seminars and one-to-one advice<br />
clinics, working closely with UCLan’s <strong>Lancashire</strong> Business School. 38<br />
UCLan named as Rugby League World Cup<br />
training camp<br />
UCLan’s Sports Arena is named as a host training venue for teams<br />
taking part in the 14-nation Rugby League World Cup tournament<br />
in 2013. UCLan is the only university and the only venue in<br />
<strong>Lancashire</strong> selected for the honour and is collaborating in<br />
partnership with Preston City Council and the Marriott Hotel. 39<br />

Guild Scrolls reborn<br />
UCLan’s Rapid Prototyping Suite plays a vital role in ensuring<br />
Preston’s historic Guild Scrolls <strong>of</strong> Friendship arrive safely at their<br />
many destinations across the world as it creates exact replicas <strong>of</strong><br />
the original wooden items.<br />
On a visit to the School <strong>of</strong> Art, Design and Performance the Mayor<br />
<strong>of</strong> Preston, The Right Worshipful Councillor Bobby Cartwright,<br />
together with Consort, Councillor Neil Cartwright, collect two <strong>of</strong><br />
the finished replicas. 40<br />
Oceania Olympic delegation heads to Preston<br />
Six Secretary Generals from Oceania National Olympic Committees<br />
visit UCLan Sports Arena and the new Sir Tom Finney Sports Centre<br />
as part <strong>of</strong> a North West tour to <strong>of</strong>ficially 'sign <strong>of</strong>f' the pre-games<br />
training camp agreements for the 15 Oceanic countries.<br />
The delegates on campus are from Fiji, Guam, Nauru, Samoa,<br />
Tonga and Tuvalu. 41<br />
Academics rewarded for outstanding practice<br />
UCLan’s academics are recognised for their outstanding efforts in<br />
the lecture theatre as eight individual winners and two teams are<br />
presented with certificates at the inaugural Vice-Chancellor’s<br />
Awards for Outstanding Practice in Teaching and Learning.<br />
The individual winners are awarded £1,500 and two winning<br />
teams given £250 per member to use for their development.<br />
The awards will now become an annual event to celebrate the<br />
work being carried out by all academic staff. 42<br />
