A: Well, they had contacted me to do an eating place here in Springfield
called--I can't think of it now--so that's how I became their representative
here in this area.
Q: How did they how about you?
A: They had seen one of my watercolors in a watercolor show. The director
had. And he then contacted me and asked me if I would do this one painting.
And I did that and then from then on I did many paintings besides the New
Salem one. I did one of a group of paintings for Masters--oh, what's the
name of his now? Edgar Lee Masters.
Q: Oh, Edgar Lee Masters, right.
A: I did his . . .
Q: His home?
A: No, not his home.
Q: His book, you mean?
A: Yes, his book.
Q: I see. Spoon River Anthology?
A: Yes, I did a number of paintings for that. And then a great many
eating places and different old houses and things through Illinois.
Q: Now, were you paid for this?
A: Oh, yea. They give you a contract and they pay you so much a picture
and so much time to do it in. You have limited time to do it so they'll
be ready for publication.
Q: Why did they do New Salem?
A: Well, New Salem--they do many things to attract people for travel.
Ford Times is a travel book. --
Q: Ford automobile.
A: Yes, so New Salem was the new and great attraction for travelers so
that's the reason they did New Salem.
Q: And how long did it take you to do those?
A: I had a month to do them in.
Q: A month. And how many did you do?
A: I think there are eight or nine in there. I don't remember. You can
do as many as you wish. It's up to you.
