ADMIRALTY SHOWS INDUSTRY SUPPORT BY SPONSORING THE LLOYD’S LIST
GLOBAL AWARDS
Admiralty announces its continued support of the prestigious Lloyd’s List Training Award for
the second year
For immediate release: 6 September 2010
Nominations for this year’s Lloyd’s List Global Awards have now been received and the
illustrious, international panel of judges have met to compile a short list of finalists for each
category. For the second year, Admiralty is proud to show its support of the industry by
sponsoring the Training Award.
The award will be presented to a company or organisation which has shown outstanding
commitment in training its employees, ashore or at sea, to the benefit of the firms’
performance, the employees’ well being and the maritime industry as a whole.
Last year’s winner of the prestigious award was the Panama Canal Authority and this year
the shortlist of potential winners includes such well respected names as the Maritime
Training Institute (Karachi), Maersk Line, NYK and Varun Shipping Company.
Mike Robinson, UKHO chief executive said, “The shipping industry is under mounting
pressure to develop and implement plans to guide it through the mandatory transition to
digital navigation. Training is continually highlighted as a key requirement to assist this shift
from paper charts to digital navigation, and critically important to support the future of
navigation.
At our recent conferences in Hamburg and Singapore, 24% of respondents told us they are
planning to fit dual ECDIS and operate a paperless bridge, with a further 19% planning to fit
dual ECDIS and carry a reduced number of paper charts. This means that there will be a
significant training requirement across the industry.”
To support its customers as they prepare for electronic navigation, Admiralty is currently
developing programs to enable personnel with the ability to interpret ENCs more accurately
and efficiently. These modules, which include computer based training, will not replace
ECDIS training, but rather enhance the knowledge gained from manufacturer and IMO
model courses.

But it’s not just navigation training and Admiralty supports quality training across the
industry. Consequently Admiralty is proud to continue its sponsorship of the Lloyd’s List
Global Awards; providing the industry with a benchmark of excellence in the major
disciplines of shipping, and companies which work hard raise standards in their own corner
of the industry a chance to receive recognition for their good work.
the world’s oceans for more than 200 years with the primary aim of providing
navigational services for the Royal Navy and merchant mariners to save and protect
lives at sea. In addition it serves small craft and leisure mariners and provides a
range of consultancy services.
2. UKHO is a Trading Fund which means it has the freedom to trade commercially to
generate revenue and cover running costs.
international shipping.
hydrographic offices around the world and new ENC coverage produced by UKHO in
co-operation with Foreign Governments to provide comprehensive, official, worldwide
coverage.
6. The Admiralty e-Navigator back of bridge application will incorporate the current
functionality of the well proven MARIS Maritime Digital Services (MDS) which has
been accredited by many ship-owners as the means by which they were able to
make the transition from analogue to electronic navigation. e-Navigator will build
upon this platform and include extensive new features.
