1. Hand operated<br />

In many areas of the United States, the backpack<br />

pump is a primary fireline tool. These handoperated<br />

pumps are designed to pump water from a<br />

backpack tank, which is rigid or collapsible. They<br />

are available from various suppliers (see appendix<br />

G) and through the GSA <strong>Wildfire</strong> Protection<br />

<strong>Equipment</strong> and Supplies Catalog.<br />

• Construction and material:<br />

Pump: brass, or other noncorrosive<br />

materials.<br />

Tank: galvanized stainless steel, nylon<br />

duck with replaceable liner, or<br />

polyethylene.<br />

Hose: rubber, Federal Specification A-A-<br />

59567<br />

Quick-connect fittings: stainless steel, or<br />

other noncorrosive materials.<br />

Straps: nylon, padded carrying straps.<br />

• Written materials: Specifications are<br />

available from various suppliers (appendix<br />

G) and:<br />

Trombone pump with collapsible bag.<br />

• Pump: Hand operated, push-pull action,<br />

single- or double-acting, carried on backpack<br />

tank.<br />

• Performance: Variable, depending on<br />

operator action (approximately 0.75 gal/min).<br />

• Tank capacity: 4 to 5 gallons<br />
