All fees are payable at registration. An additional amount per module is payable by students wishing to write examinations outside the RSA. Students who will be writing their examinations in a SADC country also have to pay an additional amount per module in addition to the cost per module. Prescribed books are excluded and must be ordered from and paid to the Insurance Institute of South Africa. On receipt of your registration form and payment, your application will be assessed and considered. If your application is approved, the tuition material for the course, as well as a unique student number, will be dispatched to you. Payments can be made per credit card, cheque, electronic transfer or direct deposit. industry and were transferred to Unisa CBM with effect from 2005. From 2009 the Programme has been revised and restructured to meet the Unisa Semester Structure and the preferred format of the Higher Education Qualification Framework. This is the first part of the Programme in Short Term Insurance. Successful completion of the programme enables the learners to become short-term insurance practitioners with a good understanding of the legal framework within which insurance is conducted, personal insurance practice, commercial insurance practice, marine and aviation insurance, reinsurance and risk management. Duration 12 months (600 notional hours). Students may complete the programme over a longer period and, in fact, it is doubtful whether students can complete the Programme in a single semester. Registration requirements A national senior certificate (FETC) or equivalent SAQA registered NQF Level 4 senior certificate, or an IISA ICiBS qualification AND an IISA Short Course in Elements of Short Term Insurance (Qual 76635), or at least 24 Insurance credits on SAQA registered NQF Level 4. Content Students must complete the following compulsory module: Code IPST01E Module Legal Framework of Insurance Students must choose any four of the following modules: IPST02F IPST03G IPST04H IPST05J IPST06K Intro to Personal Insurance Practice Intro to Commercial Insurance Practice Intro to Marine and Aviation Insurance Intro to Reinsurance Practice Intro to Risk Management Applications for exemptions and credits Application for new exemptions and exemptions for credits previously obtained through IISA or other institutions for this Programme will be combined with such applications under the IISA Programme in Short Term Insurance and must be made with the Programme Admin Office on the prescribed form. No cost is involved. Teaching method Distance education. Two assignments must be submitted and will count towards the final mark. Evaluation and examination Examinations may be written during May/June for Semester 1, and November for Semester 2 at any one of Unisa's examination centres throughout the world. An extra levy will be charged to students writing outside the borders of South Africa. A formal 2-hour examination question paper will be set for each module. Candidates must obtain at least 50% per module to pass. A mark of 75% will constitute a distinction. Supplementary (second opportunity) examinations will be written in the following semester and carry an additional examination fee. The assignments count 10% towards the final mark, while the examination counts 90%. If you are unsuccessful in the examination, you will need a minimum of 40% to be awarded a supplementary (rewrite) examination. Certificate On successful completion of the five modules (subject to the requirements), students will be awarded an official certificate by the University. Credits • NQF level 5 • 60 credits The successful completion of this Programme provides entrance into the NQF Level 5 IISA Programme in Short Term Insurance (Qual 76546), the second part of the qualification.
