This short course is one in a range of programmes that were<br />

designed to specifically address the needs of new students of<br />

insurance and their requirements <strong>for</strong> admission to the <strong>for</strong>mal<br />

<strong>Programmes</strong> in <strong>Insurance</strong> at NQF level 5. The course provides<br />

the prior knowledge required of new applicants to the IISA<br />

Introductory Programme in Short Term <strong>Insurance</strong> and is an<br />

alternative to having acquired a previous qualification in<br />

Short Term <strong>Insurance</strong> at least NQF level 4 of at least 24 SAQA<br />

accredited credits. Successful completion of the programme<br />

enables them to commence their development towards<br />

becoming short term insurance practitioners with a good<br />

understanding of the history, development and principles of<br />

short term insurance, as well as the basic legal framework<br />

within which short term insurance business is conducted.<br />

Duration<br />

Six months (120 notional hours).<br />

Registration requirements<br />

A national senior certificate (FETC) or equivalent SAQA<br />

registered NQF Level 4 senior certificate.<br />

Teaching method<br />

Distance education. Two assignments (made up of multiple<br />

choice questions) must be submitted and will count towards<br />

the final mark.<br />

Evaluation and examination<br />

Examinations may be written at any one of <strong>Unisa</strong>’s<br />

examination centres throughout the world. An extra levy will<br />

be charged to students writing outside the borders of South<br />

Africa. The examination question paper will be made up of<br />

multiple choice questions. Candidates must obtain at least<br />

50% to pass, while a mark of 75% will constitute a distinction.<br />

Examinations will be conducted in June and November.<br />

The assignments count 10% towards the final mark, while the<br />

examination counts 90%. If you are unsuccessful in the<br />

examination, you will need a minimum of 40% to be awarded<br />

a supplementary examination.<br />

Certificate<br />

On successful completion of all the modules, students will be<br />

awarded a certificate by the University.<br />

• First semester: 2 22 Jan (registration takes place<br />

The cost of the course is R800 (including tutorial letters,<br />

tuition, assignments and examination fees, but excluding the<br />

learning material/prescribed book which must be purchased<br />

direct from the IISA (info@iisa.co.za). All fees are payable at<br />

An additional amount per module is payable by students<br />

wishing to write examinations outside the RSA. Students who<br />

will be writing their examinations in a SADC country also<br />

have to pay an additional amount per module in addition to<br />

the cost per module.<br />

<strong>Unisa</strong>, and the examination fees. Prescribed books are<br />

This programme is one in a range of programmes that were<br />

designed to specifically address the needs of the insurance<br />

industry and were transferred to <strong>Unisa</strong> CBM with effect from<br />

2005. From 2009 the Programme has been revised and<br />

restructured to meet the <strong>Unisa</strong> Semester Structure and the<br />

preferred <strong>for</strong>mat of the Higher Education Qualification<br />

Framework. This is the first part of the Programme in Short<br />

Term <strong>Insurance</strong>.<br />

Successful completion of the programme enables the<br />

learners to become short-term insurance practitioners with a<br />

good understanding of the legal framework within which<br />

insurance is conducted, personal insurance practice,<br />

commercial insurance practice, marine and aviation<br />

insurance, reinsurance and risk management.<br />

Duration<br />

12 months (600 notional hours). Students may complete the<br />

programme over a longer period and, in fact, it is doubtful<br />

whether students can complete the Programme in a single<br />

semester.<br />

This programme is one in a range of programmes that<br />

were designed to specifically address the needs of the<br />

insurance industry and were transferred to <strong>Unisa</strong> CBM<br />

with effect from 2005. From 2009 the Programme has<br />

been revised and restructured to meet the <strong>Unisa</strong><br />

Semester Structure and the preferred <strong>for</strong>mat of the<br />

Higher Education Qualification Framework. This is the<br />

second part of the Programme in Short Term <strong>Insurance</strong>.<br />

The programme improves the employability of learners<br />

in the sense that the successful completion of the<br />

programme enables them to become short-term<br />

insurance practitioners with a good understanding of the<br />

legal framework within which short-term insurance<br />

business is conducted, personal insurance practice,<br />

commercial insurance practice, marine and aviation<br />

insurance, reinsurance and risk management.<br />

of learners in the sense that the successful completion<br />

legal framework within which life insurance business is<br />

conducted and the principles governing estate planning,<br />

retirement planning, business life insurance and<br />

investment management, in the case of intermediary<br />

staff, or the principles of underwriting, life insurance<br />

claims, health insurance and investment management,<br />

in the case of administrative staff.<br />

Twelve months (600 notional hours). Students may<br />

fact, it is doubtful whether students can complete the<br />

This programme is one in a range of programmes that<br />

were designed to specifically address the needs of the<br />

insurance industry and were transferred to <strong>Unisa</strong> CBM<br />

with effect from 2005. From 2009 the Programme has<br />

been revised and restructured to meet the <strong>Unisa</strong><br />

Semester Structure and the preferred <strong>for</strong>mat of the<br />

Higher Education Qualification Framework. This is the<br />

second part of the Programme in Life <strong>Insurance</strong> part of<br />

the Programme in Life <strong>Insurance</strong>, which is a<br />

combination of the <strong>for</strong>mer IISA <strong>Programmes</strong> in Life<br />

<strong>Insurance</strong> and Life <strong>Insurance</strong> Servicing. The programme<br />

improves the employability of learners in the sense that<br />

the successful completion of the programme enables<br />

them to become life insurance practitioners with a good<br />

IISA Short Course in Elements of Retirement<br />

Funds<br />

Qualification code: 76627<br />

This short course is one in a range of programmes that<br />

were designed to specifically address the needs of new<br />

students of insurance and their requirements <strong>for</strong><br />

admission to the <strong>for</strong>mal <strong>Programmes</strong> in <strong>Insurance</strong> at<br />

NQF level 5. The course provides the prior knowledge<br />

required of new applicants to the IISA Introductory<br />

Programme in Retirement Funds and is an alternative to<br />

having acquired a previous qualification in Retirement<br />

Funds at at least NQF level 4 of at least 24 SAQA<br />

accredited credits. Successful completion of the<br />

programme enables them to commence their<br />

development towards becoming retirement fund<br />

practitioners with a good understanding of the history,<br />

development and principles of insurance and retirement<br />

funds, as well as the basic legal framework within which<br />

retirement funds business is conducted.<br />

llSA Programme in Retirement<br />

Fund <strong>Management</strong> (2009)<br />

Qualification code: 76511<br />

This programme is one in a range of programmes that<br />

were designed to specifically address the needs of the<br />

insurance industry and were transferred to <strong>Unisa</strong> CBM<br />

with effect from 2005. From 2009 the Programme has<br />

been revised and restructured to meet the <strong>Unisa</strong><br />

Semester Structure and the preferred <strong>for</strong>mat of the<br />

Higher Education Qualification Framework. This is the<br />

second part of the Programme in Retirement Fund<br />

<strong>Management</strong>. The programme improves the<br />

employability of learners in the sense that the<br />

successful completion of the programme enables them<br />

to become retirement fund practitioners with a good<br />

understanding of retirement benefit design, fund<br />

financing and investment decisions and apply sound<br />

fund administration with due cognisance of legislation<br />

pertaining to retirement funds.<br />

Duration<br />

Twelve months (600 notional hours). Students may<br />

complete the programme over a longer period and, in<br />

fact, it is doubtful whether students can complete the<br />

Programme in a single semester.<br />

Content<br />

Students must complete the following five compulsory<br />

modules:<br />

Applications <strong>for</strong> exemptions and credits<br />

Application <strong>for</strong> new exemptions and exemptions <strong>for</strong><br />

credits previously obtained through IISA or other<br />

institutions <strong>for</strong> this Programme will be combined with<br />

such applications under the IISA Introductory<br />

Programme in Retirement Fund <strong>Management</strong> and must<br />

be made with the Programme Admin Office on the<br />

prescribed <strong>for</strong>m. No cost is involved.<br />

Teaching method<br />

Distance education. Two assignments must be<br />

submitted and will count towards the final mark.<br />

Evaluation and examination<br />

NB Take careful note of the semester during which the<br />

elective modules are available, in the selection of<br />

modules and to plan your studies and the completion of<br />

the Programme.<br />

Examinations may be written during May/June <strong>for</strong><br />

semester one, and November <strong>for</strong> semester two at any<br />

one of <strong>Unisa</strong>'s examination centres throughout the<br />

world. An extra levy will be charged to students writing<br />

outside the borders of South Africa. A <strong>for</strong>mal 2-hour<br />

examination question paper will be set <strong>for</strong> each module.<br />

Candidates must obtain at least 50% per module to<br />

pass. A mark of 75% will constitute a distinction.<br />

Supplementary (second opportunity) examinations will<br />

be written in the following semester and carry an<br />

additional examination fee.<br />

The assignments count 10% towards the final mark,<br />

while the examination counts 90%. If you are<br />

unsuccessful in the examination, you will need a<br />

minimum of 40% to be awarded a supplementary<br />

(rewrite) examination.<br />

Certificate<br />

On successful completion of the five modules (and<br />

subject to the regulations and requirements applicable<br />

to the elective subjects) students will be awarded an<br />

official certificate by the University.<br />

Candidates completing the Level 5 programme may<br />

apply <strong>for</strong> Licentiateship of the IISA, subject to the<br />

eligibility requirements as determined by IISA at the<br />

time.<br />

• NQF level 5<br />

• 60 credits<br />

The successful completion of this Programme provides<br />

entrance into the NQF Level 6 IISA Introductory<br />

Programme in Advanced <strong>Insurance</strong> Practice.<br />

The registration periods and academic year commencement<br />

dates are:<br />

• First semester: 2 22 Jan (registration takes place<br />

from 1 Dec until 22 Jan)<br />

• Second semester: 16 Jul (registration takes place from<br />

21 Jun until 16 Jul)<br />

The cost per module is R800 (including tutorial letters,<br />

tuition, assignments and examination fees, but<br />

excluding the learning material/prescribed book which<br />

must be purchased direct from the IISA<br />

(info@iisa.co.za)). All fees are payable at registration.<br />

An additional amount per module is payable by students<br />

wishing to write examinations outside the RSA.<br />

Students who will be writing their examinations in a<br />

SADC country also have to pay an additional amount<br />

per module in addition to the cost per module.<br />

application will be assessed and considered. If your<br />

application is approved, the tuition material <strong>for</strong> the<br />

selected modules, as well as a unique student number<br />

This programme is one in a range of programmes that<br />

were designed to specifically address the needs of the<br />

insurance industry and were transferred to <strong>Unisa</strong> CBM<br />
