Purpose: To enable students to acquire basic Arabic<br />

grammar, the language skills <strong>of</strong> understanding Arabic<br />

sentences and <strong>of</strong> following simple dialogues and internalising<br />

them.<br />

Pre-Intermediate Arabic - ARB1602<br />

Semester module<br />

NQF Lev el: 6<br />

Credits: 12<br />

Co-requisite: ARB1501 or ARB101K<br />

Purpose: To enable students to acquire the basic language<br />

skills <strong>of</strong> reading, writing, understanding and speaking, with<br />

particular focus on the verb structures <strong>of</strong> Arabic strong verbs.<br />

Intermediate Arabic - ARB2603<br />

Semester module<br />

NQF Level: 6<br />

Credits: 12<br />

Prerequisite: ARB1501, ARB1502 or mother tongue<br />

speaker<br />

Purpose: To allow students to acquire more advanced skills<br />

<strong>of</strong> reading, writing and speaking, as well as knowing and<br />

understanding weak verbs, in relation to the Arabic language.<br />

Advanced Arabic - ARB2704<br />

Semester module<br />

NQF Level: 7<br />

Credits: 12<br />

Prerequisite: ARB1501, ARB1502 or mother tongue<br />

speaker,<br />

Co-requisite: ARB2603<br />

Purpose: Students will learn more about stylistic techniques<br />

<strong>of</strong> the Arabic language, as well as sentence construction and<br />

analysis.<br />

Basic Arabic Literary Texts - ARB2705<br />

Prerequisite: ARB2603<br />

Co-requisite: ARB2704<br />

Purpose: To advance the student’s mastery <strong>of</strong> Arabic by<br />

an introduction and analysis <strong>of</strong> selected classical and modern<br />

Arabic texts.<br />

Specialist Arabic Literary Text - ARB3706<br />

Purpose: To advance the student’s mastery <strong>of</strong> Arabic by<br />

Advanced Arabic Literary Texts - ARB3707<br />

Purpose: To enable students to articulate the theory and<br />

history <strong>of</strong> modern Arabic prose literature through analysis and<br />

emergence <strong>of</strong> new themes.<br />

Arabic Grammar and Philology - ARB4801<br />

(ARBLITE)<br />

Credits: 24<br />

Purpose: This module equips students with a firm<br />

understanding <strong>of</strong> Arabic grammar, philology, stylistics and<br />

semantics; insights into the linguistic development <strong>of</strong> Standard<br />

Arabic, as well as the emergence and features <strong>of</strong> diaglossia;<br />

and the capacity to determine the position <strong>of</strong> Arabic on a map<br />

<strong>of</strong> regional and global languages.<br />

Qur’Ranic Translation and Commentary - ARB4802<br />

(ARBQTC4)<br />

Credits: 24<br />

Purpose: This module equips students with a firm<br />

understanding <strong>of</strong> the Qur’anic text; insights into the<br />

understanding <strong>of</strong> Qur’anic commentaries; the ability to read<br />

Arabic commentaries which developed over the past fourteen<br />

centuries; and to further comprehend the texts.<br />

Further Specialist Arabic Literary Texts - ARB4803<br />

(ARBCMC6)<br />

Year module<br />

NQF Level: 8<br />

Credits: 24<br />

Purpose: This module equips students with a strong<br />

understanding <strong>of</strong> select Arabic classical, modern and<br />

contemporary pr<strong>of</strong>essional texts; insights into the linguistic<br />

development <strong>of</strong> select Arabic texts, from the seventh to the<br />

nineteenth centuries in prose, poetry and rhythmic prose; and<br />

selected contemporary texts that allow students to master<br />

discourse in fields like classical Islam, diplomacy, politics, law,<br />

trade, industry, technology, sport, fashion and economics.<br />
