THE TROUBLE WITH MARKETS
“an economist unusually able to speak with authority -
because unlike most of his peers, Bootle spotted that the boom
was unsustainable."
Robert Peston, Business Editor, BBC
“Roger Bootle is one of the best interpreters of modern
capitalism around.”
Will Hutton, Executive Vice Chair, THE WORK FOUNDATION
“Roger Bootle is one of the top, practical economists in
the financial world but he is not afraid to tackle the bigger,
deeper questions around the future of capitalism, the role of
markets and government.”
Vince Cable MP, Business Secretary, UK
One of the City of London’s best-known economists, Roger Bootle runs the consultancy,
Capital Economics, which specialises in macroeconomics. He is also Economic Adviser to
Deloitte, a Specialist Adviser to the House of Commons Treasury Committee and an
Honorary Fellow of the Institute of Actuaries. He was formerly Group Chief Economist of
HSBC and, before the change of government, was appointed one of the Chancellor’s panel
of Independent Economic Advisers, the so-called “Wise Men”. Roger Bootle was formerly a
Lecturer in Economics at St Anne’s College, Oxford and most of his subsequent career has
been spent in the City of London. He has written many articles and several books on
monetary economics. Roger’s latest book, The Trouble with Markets, analyses the deep
causes of the recent financial crisis and discusses the threats to capitalism arising from it. His
previous book, Money for Nothing, correctly anticipated the financial crisis and has been
widely acclaimed. This followed the success of The Death of Inflation, published in 1996,
which became a best-seller and was subsequently translated into nine languages. Initially
dismissed as extreme, The Death of Inflation is now widely recognised as prophetic. Roger is
also joint author of the book Theory of Money, and author of Index-Linked Gilts. Roger is a
regular columnist for The Daily Telegraph and appears frequently on television and radio.
For biography please see page 2.
Besides hearing from speakers in topical panel sessions, participants
will themselves take part in interactive roundtable discussions, led by
panellists, which feed into further debate. This is interactive learning,
on critical subjects, at its very best.
Back after its much-lauded launch in 2009, this single-module stream
will give invaluable practical insights into the development of private
equity firms. The objective is to give delegates useable help in thinking
about how they address the impact of the downturn in private equity
markets on the development of their firms. To achieve this, the Strategy
and Practice stream will alternate three 20 minute panel discussions
with three 20 minute roundtables. Each of the speakers/moderators will
lead a small roundtable discussion after each panel.
