APRIL 14, 2010
Stocking California streams slowed
due to lawsuit filed against DFG
Large albino rainbow trout swim in the Crystal Lake Hatchery in Cassel, adjacent to Baum
Lake. Normally, millions of three- to five-inch trout are stocked in the state's waters each
year. An environmental study imposed on the DFG may exacerbate the declining number of
anglers fishing California waters, affecting the region's economy.
By BILL CAMPBELL
Fishing for trout on California streams may be significantly
reduced this season due to a lawsuit initiated
by two conservation organizations.
In 2006, the two groups filed a lawsuit to require
California Department of Fish and Game (DFG) to conduct
an environmental impact report on the 100-yearold
practice of stocking hatchery grown rainbow trout
in waters without the indigenous species.
“It puts another dagger in our economy,” said
Shasta Angler owner Matt Nicholls. The Fall River
Mills fishing retail store owner calls the environmental
study another example of environmentalists and lobbies
“shutting things down.”
The EIR requires the DFG to “evaluate the affect on
85 different native species, including reptiles, amphibians
and birds, in that water,” said Steve Baumgartner,
DFG environmental specialist, based in Redding.
“Public favorite” waters are Baumgartner’s priority
as his colleagues evaluate 50 waters concurrently
since the document’s January release.
Evaluated and cleared to receive hatchery stocked
fish are Burney Creek, middle Hat Creek near Cassel
and Shasta Lake in Shasta County; lower Ash Creek,
Eagle Lake and McCoy Flat Reservoir and Dodge Reservoir
in Lassen County. Evaluation of the upper Hat
Creek and Baum Lake should conclude this week.
Baum Lake was among the waters listed in
a lawsuit filed by two conservation organizations,
forcing the California Department
of Fish and Game to evaluate the impact of
stocking hatchery trout in the state's bodies
of water and streams. Baum Lake is dependent
on stocked trout.
NEWS PHOTOS / Bill Campbell
Many Intermountain area
streams cleared for stocking
Fall River, lower Hat Creek, Manzanita Lake,
lower McCloud River, Pit River and upper Ash Creek
(Lassen County) are exempt from evaluation because
rainbow trout are indigenous to those waters, according
to DFG.
In the Redding based DFG region, comprising nine
northern counties, a total of 314 northern California
waters will be evaluated. Approximately 10 percent
have been evaluated or in stages of approval.
“Some waters will be relegated to sterile fish,” the
scientist said, declining to name specific waters.
An on-line list, www.dfg.ca.gov/fish/Hatcheries/
FishPlanting/Evaluation.asp, is updated as evaluations
are finished.
Known nationally for excellent fly-fishing, numerous
Intermountain streams and reservoirs are mostly
or completely dependent on hatchery fish.
Some prominent fishing waters waiting for evaluation
are lower Clark Creek, Fall River Lake, Grace
Lake, Hatchet Creek, Montgomery Creek, Rock
Creek, McCloud Reservoir and McCumber Reservoir
in Shasta County; Medicine Lake and Lake Shastina
in Siskiyou County; Silver Lake and Blue Lake in
Lassen County; and, Reservoir F, West Valley Reservoir
and Pine Creek Reservoir in Modoc County.
In October 2006, Pacific Rivers Council and Center
for Biological Diversity, represented by Stanford Law
School environmental clinic students who provided
pro-bono service, sued DFG over its century-old fish
stocking practice.
The plaintiffs claimed no environmental impact
report had been completed for the program. In July
2007, Sacramento Superior Court issued a court
order requiring DFG to complete an EIR.
In November 2008, DFG decided to forgo stocking
man-made reservoirs larger than 1,000 acres and
stocking reservoirs less than 1,000 acres that are
not connected to a river or stream or are within red
legged frog critical habitat or where the species are
known to exist.
The years-long and multimillion dollar EIR process
was completed in January.
Subsequently, DFG implemented a pre-stocking
evaluation protocol (PSEP) to help mitigate impacts
associated with trout stocking.
PSEP is a decision support process whereby the
department determines the likelihood that various
sensitive, native or legally protected species could be
impacted due to stocking.
The process includes various record searches,
surveys, native species restoration, and habitat protection
measures.
“It’s very complicated,” said Baumgartner.
Renown
contract
proposal
favored
Board looking at less
than 5-year alignment
committment with
Reno-based facility
Hospital hiring
its own CEO
still an option
on the table
Mayers Hospital directors
want to know if Reno,
Nev.,-based Renown
Health would accept a
partnership contract of
less than five years.
The local five-member
hospital board viewed
Renown’s proposal Friday,
outlining a five-year committment
where the larger
health care facility would
provide a part-time chief
executive officer (CEO)
and the company’s expertise
for $16,500 per
month.
Directors here have
been weighing all options
as to the future of the local
hospital, which has facilities
in both Fall River Mills
and Burney.
Director Jim Hamlin
said he likes Renown’s
proposal, but was quick
to note nothing has been
decided.
He said directors are
also weighing a proposal
by one of nine applicants
for the open hospital head
position who has indicated
he would be willing to serve
as an interim CEO.
Keith Brady of Lakeside,
near San Diego, was the
second choice for hospital
CEO when the board hired
Katharine Ann Campbell.
Director Allen Albaugh
noted Brady had been
through the vetting process,
having been interviewed
by the board when
he applied three years
ago.
Renown’s proposal will
provide the hospital with a
CEO, Doug Self, who has
been the CEO for a Chester
hospital the past three
years. If directors here
agree with Renown’s proposal,
Self’s time would be
split, 60 percent at Mayers
and 40 percent in Chester.
Under the proposal,
the Mayers board would
remain and continue to
oversee the CEO.
“We’re weighing all
our options,” Hamlin said.
“We’re not really going one
way or another” in favoring
any particular option.
The board is scheduled
to meet again April 28 at
its Burney facility.
Serving on the board are
president Michael Kerns,
vice president Hamlin,
secretary Gail McClung,
treasurer Albaugh, and
newly appointed director
Brenda Brubaker.
SAFEWAY REMODEL NEARLY FINISHED
“The whole store has been touched…a 100-percent
facelift” said Ken Shaffer, Burney Safeway store manager.
The store was remodeled to clean it up and to “get
people to shop locally,” the Ukiah native said.
Shaffer has managed the store for five years and
worked for the corporation for 16 years. He was assistant
manager of a Chico store prior to his promotion to the
Burney location, where 52 employees work.
The Burney store’s exterior has new signs, paint, and
concrete shoulder around the building’s front.
Inside, all floor coverings were replaced and the store
repainted.
An expanded flower department and knick-knack
goods greet east entrance visitors. Greeting cards were
relocated from the west entrance to this lifestyle section.
In the produce department, shelves facing the vegetables
were removed to increase open space and accommodate
a new donut display case and refrigerator for
frozen treats.
A larger donut case provides room for an expanded
selection of fresh donuts and cookies.
The adjacent empty refrigerator will soon display ice
cream cakes.
Goodies in these sections will be baked each morning
in Redding and arrive at the Burney store before 7:30
a.m.
Produce bins are new and hold a slightly larger vegetable
selection. The hanging water misters were replaced
and, similar to other Safeway stores; ambient sounds will
soon greet shoppers.
Lighting was installed on the row of shelves behind the
donut display case making it easier to read labels.
While Safeway stores are similar, Shaffer had some
input into the final remodel and product selection.
The manager said customers express appreciation for
the wider aisles, created by swapping shorter shelves for
the previous cabinet width ones.
Walking towards the store’s west side, the manager
noted the egg and meat counters are new and the pharmacy
had a small facelift.
Heading towards the store’s front, Shaffer said hot and
cold soup bars are a new product line greeting customers
as they enter the store’s west entrance.
The deli counter was lowered but remains in its previous
location.
Previously, pizzas were almost invisible in a display
case below the deli counter. They are now in a tall, new
display case adjacent to the deli counter.
Glass bubbles protruding from the store’s upper walls
contain new security system cameras surrounding the
nearly 14,000-square-foot retail space.
Even the warehouse doors received a facelift. Behind
the doors is 6,000 square feet for product storage and
shipping and receiving.
Renovation costs are “never revealed,“ stated Susan
Houghton, public and governmental affairs director for
northern California Division.
This time last year Safeway considered building a new
store in a proposed mall east of Burney.
Regarding a store relocation or expansion, Houghton
said the company “renovated the current store and will
make it work for now.” The company will “keep its options
open” for future plans.
MURDER MYSTERIES POPULAR;
ROBBERIES FRUSTRATE OWNERS
Porous Pines Country Club was the most recent
crime scene in the eighth murder mystery dinner hosted
by Angelina’s in Burney. The first dinner theatre was in
October 2008.
The restaurant’s dining room floor was the pretend
18th hole, the scene of Holin Wunn’s sudden death in a
gender challenged golf match with Birdie Bigelow.
Tables surrounded the “hole” as 11 guests asked the
six suspects questions during a stuffed pork chop dinner
and crepes dessert. The caddy committed the murder
with a poison laden umbrella tip.
Co-owner Connie Voltura said the dinners “give
people something different to do and brings in more revenue,”
during winter’s slow season. Dinner theatre returns
next fall.
Real burglaries are frustrating Voltura and her coowner
husband, Paul. Six times during their nearly fouryear
ownership, robbers stole cases of beer and liquor
from bar shelves.
For the first time, a suspect was recently arrested but
is not incarcerated because the jail is full. His hearing is
later this month.
The owners increased security by installing cameras
and bars on windows but robbers still find entry points.
Insurance does not cover the thefts because the bandits
steal “just under the $1,000 deductible,” she said.
A second concern is skate boarders continued use of
the restaurant’s outdoor concrete patio located behind
the restaurant. Appropriate signs do not stop the trespassers,
creating a potential liability to the restaurant
owners.
“It’s pretty sad our community has that many burglaries
and nobody gets caught,” Volutra said. “I don’t know
what to do about it,” she said.
Lions Club top citizen
John Ospital was named the Burney Lions Club citizen of the year during the club’s community appreciation
dinner Thursday night. Presenting Ospital with his award is the club’s president, Dee Wayne Field.
Master of ceremonies for the evening, Stan Story, noted Ospital’s volunteerism and community service
among the reasons he was chosen for the honor.
Walk to
School Day
The Safe Routes to School
program is offering $500 to
six Shasta County Schools
for coordinating Walk to
School Day, Oct. 6
Applications are due by 5
p.m. on Friday, April 23.
To be eligible, schools
must have a group of parents
from PTA, a parent club, or
Site Council willing to coordinate
the event, which must
include a walking school
bus.
A walking school bus is a
supervised group of children
walking together to school.
Typically the students
meet at a park or church
parking lot before walking to
school.
Few local schools have
participated in International
Walk to School Day in the
past.
The goal of the Safe
Routes to School Program is
to make walking and biking
to school safer, easier, more
convenient, and increase the
numbers of children walking
or biking to school safely.
“Walking and biking to
school is a great way for children
to get exercise before
starting their school day,
making them more prepared
to concentrate and learn
when they arrive at school,”
said Sara Sundquist, Safe
Routes to School program
coordinator.
“Walking and cycling also
reduces the number of cars
around the school area,
making it safer for even more
children to walk or bike.”
For more information or
for an application, call Sara
Sundquist at 245-6457 or
LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Garbage Creek
Editor:
The other day I took a walk
along Burney Creek between
Park Avenue and Highway
299.
I expected to experience
nature at its finest, after all,
we do live in a very blessed
region.
Instead, with nearly every
step was ome form of litter.
Most disturbing was the
broken glass from beer bottles.
The jagged bottoms of the
bottles and the broken necks
no doubt cut the feet of any
animal coming in contact.
Then there were bed
springs, shower curtains,
discarded clothing, wire,
plastics of every shape, soda
cans, the remains of messy
camps and fires and the list
goes on.
Anyway, I have renamed
this stretch of the creek “Garbage
Creek,” as it is most fitting.
I wonder, when the tourist
or fisherperson stop at the
chamber of commerce or at
Vaughn’s Sporting Goods
seeking directions about
where to recreate or fish, can
the advisor be held liable for
injuries when one lacerates a
foot or hand after going where
they were told or advised?
Or perhaps this is but one
more reason to use the community
swimming pool. It’s
unlikely one will lacerate the
body on broken glass at the
pool.
But I’m willing to bet, one
has a better chance at catching
some kind of virus often
found in public bathing establishments
than in the waters
running off Burney mountain.
A few years back I
attempted to organize a
clean-up party without
succes. Last year as I recall,
it was the students at the
continuation high school that
partook in a clean-up of the
creek.
Well, I propose to others
to organize now and partake
in a clean-up prior to the vegetation
sproouting and hence
hiding much of the litter.
Other communities bond
together to solve their problems,
yet I have yet to see
this community bonding
together to do anything.
The Hat Creek Fire Flies
have raised over $85,000 in
the past five or so years to
help build a fire hall and multipurpose
room. How many
Fire Flies might be asked?
Perhaps fifteen plus or
minus a few raised these
funds.
Yet the town’s people of
Burney fail at doing anything
Ups and Downs of Spring!
In spring and summer we really keep an eye out for storms. Storms have their ups and downs. Some are mild and
refreshing. Others, like thunderstorms, hurricanes and tornadoes are dangerous. Rain fills lakes and streams, but too
much too quickly causes flooding. Lightning from storms may
strike the earth and cause damage. April showers may be
dark and windy but, luckily, they are mostly refreshing!
Agency urgently seeking foster homes
The Shasta County Health
and Human Services Agency
is looking for caring individuals
who are interested in
becoming foster parents.
As of February 2010, more
than 500 children were in
out-of-home care in Shasta
County, but only 142 families
were licensed through
the county to provide foster
care.
“We need people who can
provide care and stability for
the children, but at the same
time, will support our efforts
to reunify the children with
their biological families,” said
Wanda Lamb, Senior Social
Worker of Shasta County
Health and Human Services
Agency, Children’s Services.
Foster parents play a crucial
role in the community.
They care for children who
are going through a difficult
time in their lives, and cannot
safely live with their parents
for a while.
Bonnie Palmer has been
fostering in Shasta County
for more than 24 years and
has cared for more than 600
children.
“I have an old sense
of values,” said Bonnie. “I
believe that people should be
responsible and help others.
Foster parenting makes
me feel like I’m giving back.”
The types of foster care
vary.
General Use Foster Care
allows children to receive
care in a safe and loving
environment while waiting to
return home.
Children can also be
placed with relatives or nonrelative
“extended family
members,” in what is called
Kinship Care.
Children up to age 5,
including those with special
needs, are cared for by
foster parents in the Options
Program.
Adults who aren’t ready
to take in a foster child, but
want to provide a valuable
service may chose to provide
Respite Care for foster families
who need a break.
For those interested in
caring for a foster child, call
Wanda Lamb at 225-5858
or visit www.shastahhsa.net
to find a schedule of inquiry
meetings.
Raiders drop a
pair with Bears
The Burney Raiders and
Mt. Shasta Bears squeezed
in a Shasta Cascade League
doubleheader at Big League
Dreams in Redding on April
7. The teams agreed to play
their league games on a neutral
field and use one game
for the annual Shasta Lake
Bass Classic baseball tournament,
which both teams
competed in.
They Raiders held leads
in both games but errors and
miscues allowed the Bears
to take control of the games
late. Raider coach Tony Pellegrino
said he’s frustrated
with the errors but realizes
it’s part of the growing process
with freshman in the
outfield.
“We have a lot of errors
but I think the guys are learning
from them,” Pellegrino
said. “We have a lot of young
guys on the team and there’s
only one way they’re going to
learn and I’m really starting
to see the improvement.”
Burney had 11 errors on
the day, six errors in the first
game and five in the second,
and their leads slowly dissipated
into deficits losing the
first game 4-5 and the second
4-7. The Raiders drop to 0-4
in SCL play and 0-8 overall.
The Bears improve to 4-0
SCL with an overall record of
6-7.
Cody Smith went the distance
in game one striking out
four Bears in the loss. Burney
had some big hits in the third
and plated four runs to take
the lead. Smith hit a 2-RBI
double to score Macloud
Luntey and Duane White and
Michael Childers followed
with a triple. Childers scored
on a pass ball to give the
Raiders a 4-1 advantage.
But the Bears chipped
away by scoring two in the
fourth and a run in the fifth
to knot the score at 4-all.
The game looked to go extra
innings but with two down the
Bears reached on an error
then scored on an error to
bring the game to an end.
In the dip, Burney was
able to take advantage of
mistakes by the Bears and
held a 4-2 lead heading into
the home half of the fourth.
The Raiders recorded the
first two outs of the inning but
then the defense faltered.
After four errors, two walks
and hit the Bears scored five
runs in the inning and held on
for the 7-4 win.
Luntey hurled a complete
game for the Raiders and
fanned nine Bears along the
way. With the bat, Luntey
went 2-for-3 with a RBI.
15 th Redding Breakfast Lions
All-Star games at Shasta
took both the boys and girls
games fairly easy, some area
hoopsters and their Shasta
Cascade League counterparts
made it as difficult as
they could playing for the
Shasta College Sunday.
Carpine went with four SCL
players including MVP Taylor
Sloat from Fall River and
Burney’s Ryan Phipps in the
starting lineup.
The South squad was the
quicker and more aggressive
team and jumped out to an
early lead, but the patient
North group battle back and
took a two-point lead into
the break. But the South ran
away with it in the second
half for a 97-78 win. Phipps
scored the first points for the
North to get on the board at
10-2.
The South was up 30-14
when the North went on a run
and eventually took the lead
going into the half. Phipps
hit a short floater; Sloat and
Trinity’s Jared Atterberry
hit back-to-back threes and
the South was back in the
game.
Sloat and Phipps sank
free-throws to get the South
with in two and Fall River’s
Raphael Tschirky hit a shot
jumper to tie the game at
42-42 with 35 seconds left in
the half. The North’s defense
held and Sloat drove to the
basket for a lay up and a
North 42-44 lead at intermission.
Atterberry hit a pair of
threes to start the second
half but the South would tie
the game at 52-52 and ran
away with it at the end.
Atterberry led the North
with 15 points, all from
3-point range. Sloat scored
eight points in the first half
and finished with 14, Phipps
chipped in with eight.
Foothill’s Mark Rothwell
took home the MVP honors
for the South.
The girls opened the
show with the South group
taking the contest 70-56 with
a strong showing from some
Shasta Cascade League allstars.
The South jumped out
to a 35-17 lead when North
coach Tom Campbell put an
all-SCL lineup on the floor
with Fall River’s Krisiti Cearley
and Burney’s Hannah
Rogers.
The North immediately
went on a 12-2 run and cut
the deficit to eight. Cearley
had two points and two
blocks during the run.
Campbell called on the
group again with his team
down 50-35 in the second
half. The North closed went
on a 7-2 run to get to a
10-point deficit at 52-42 with
12:52 to go in the second
half. Campbell went back to
a large school line up with
three CV players on the floor.
Campbell called on the group
again with 7:55 remaining
down by 56-44.
Cearley hit a pair of free
throws to get within 10 and
the group went off the floor
down by eight at 58-50. But
the North ran away with it
from there and finished on a
12-6 run.
Cearley finished with six
points and Kim Micheletti of
for the South.
Little victories and first win
for Raiders at Bass tourney
NEWS PHOTO/ Richard Allan
Burney catcher Alex Courtright can only smile after
throwing out three base stealers in one inning at
the Bass Classic baseball tourney at Big League
Dreams.
The Burney Raiders went
into the 32-team Shasta Bass
baseball tournament, at Big
League Dreams in Redding,
hoping for a few wins but was
looking forward to getting
the young talent some extra
work.
The tournament was a
huge success for the Raiders
despite a 1-4 performance,
said Raider coach Tony Pellegrino.
“We learned a lot about
our team,” Pellegrinon said,
“and we left whole a lot better
than when we got there that’s
for sure.”
The Raiders played better
than some of their scores
would indicate but could not
avoid that one disaster inning
that led to a couple lopsided
losses.
The highlights for Burney
was getting its first win of the
season Thursday trouncing
the U-Prep Panthers 15-0
and the April 7th night game
with the Inderkum Tigers
from Sacramento on.
The Raiders jumped on the
Panthers early plating seven
runs in the first inning and
cruised to an easy win. Cody
Smith threw an economical
51 pitches in five innings of
work tossing a no-hit shutout
to help get the Raiders off the
schnide. Michael Childers
went 3-for-4 at the plate with
a homer, a double and four
RBI. Alex Courtright was
2-for-4 with a double and four
RBI.
The tournament ran late
on the first day and the Raiders
played a late game on
BLD’s Wrigley Field against a
winless Inderkum team. Both
teams entered the game with
a 0-8 record but you couldn’t
tell by watching them play.
The Tigers hit the field
running and challenged
Courtright’s arm from behind
the plate. Courtright’s first
few throws were off the
mark and sailing, which led
to a Tiger score. The Tigers
thought they could run wild,
but Courtright would soon
bring it to a halt.
Courtright threw out three
base stealers to record all
three outs of the second
inning and the Raiders came
off the field fired to start
the third. Sophomore Brian
Pierce tied the game at 1-1
with a single swing of the bat
and blasted the second pitch
deep over the centerfield
wall to lead off the inning.
Smith singled and promptly
stole second and eventually
scored on a pass ball for a
2-1 Raider advantage.
“I have never seen a
momentum changer like
that,” Pellegrino said about
Courtright’s threw assists
in an inning. “To have you
catcher come up that big for
you is amazing. Then have
the first batter come up and
crush one dead center was
simply amazing.”
The Tigers slowed their
running game down a bit
but still had their doubts and
tried to get a runner in scoring
position with two out in
the bottom of the third. The
runner left for second and
Courtright gunned him down
to end another inning. The
Raiders continued to ride the
momentum and plated two
more runs in the top of the
fourth with Courtright coming
up with a two-out RBI double
to give Burney a 4-1 lead.
However, the Raiders got
into trouble in the bottom
frame. Pitchers from both
teams were getting the
boarder line pitch down-andin.
But all of a sudden the
Raiders weren’t getting the
call and the Tigers started to
take advantage. It looked like
the worse that would happen
the Tigers would tie the game
at 4-all. But then came the
big hit and the big inning and
the Tigers plated eight runs
in the inning and went on to
win the game 12-4.
Burney opened the tournament
with a 5-4 loss to
Mt. Shasta in a game that
doubled as a league contest.
The Raiders lost to Anderson
17-2 on Thursday and finished
the tournament Friday
with an 11-4 loss to Yreka.
The Fall River Bulldogs
got off to a hot start wining
their seven games with a
relative amount of ease. But
the team knew they were
going to get tested at the
Central Valley High Bass
Classic baseball tournament,
played at Big League
Dreams. Despite not having
played a game since March
26, the Bulldogs went on to
have their best performance
ever at the 32-team tournament
with a 3-2 finish.
“Our focus was just to
end the tournament playing
better than we started,”
Fall River coach Tim DeCoito
said. “We haven’t played
since (the) Weed (game in
March) and we able to play
well and finish strong. I think
we can get some momentum
from it that will help us with
our league games coming
up.”
Pitching is usually the
biggest issue in this tournament,
especially for the small
schools. But the Bulldogs
were fortunate to get some
quality starts from their staff.
Fall River hurlers completed
four of the five games played
with only one relief appearance
throughout the threeday
tourney. Freshman Clay
Pasqual closed out the last
inning of the Bulldogs final
game.
Fall River (10-2) opened
the tournament against Gridley
in a battle of Bulldogs, but
Gridley was the team with all
the bite winning the game
14-2. Fall River squeaked
out a 4-3 win against the
Trinity Wolves playing under
the lights at BLD’s Wrigley
field.
The Bulldogs scored two
in the second for an early 2-0
advantage. But the Wolves
battled back and took a 3-2
lead in the fifth. Fall River
battled back with a pair in
the bottom frame to go up
4-3 and held on to win by the
same score.
“We got the hits when we
needed a hit and we got the
runs when we needed the
runs,” DeCoito said about
the Bulldogs win over Trinity.
Tyler Kirk had a 2-RBI
double in the game and Trey
Kramer fanned 10 going the
distance for the win.
Dusty Williams records his second double of the
day as the Bulldogs beat the Inderkum Tigers (Sacramento)
Friday at Big League Dreams.
went 4-for-4 with a homer,
a double and six RBI. Tyler
Kirk pitched three-hit ball for
the win.
The Bulldogs were looking
at a shot at the consolation
championship but could
not get past the Lassen
Grizzlies. Fall River took a
3-0 lead in the first inning
helped by a Taylor Sloat
2-RBI double. But the Bulldogs
couldn’t hold on and
the Grizzlies tied the game
in the second. Lassen added
two in the fifth and another in
the sixth for a 6-4 win.
Jared Vestal took off the
gear and took the hill for the
Bulldogs. Vestal finished with
seven strikeouts in a losing
effort. Pasqual went behind
the dish to get some work at
the catcher position.
Fall River finished the
tourney with a win over the
Inderkum Tigers out of Sacramento.
The Bulldogs looked
to be in for an easy win with
a 7-1 lead in the third inning.
But errors mounted as the
Tigers battled back to cut
the Bulldogs lead to 7-4. Fall
River added four runs the
next inning for some comfort
room they would need at the
end. Dusty Williams hit his
second 2-run double of the
game to finish the Bulldogs
scoring.
The Tigers made one last
push in the bottom of the
fourth aided by a series of
Bulldog errors and walks.
DeCoito wanted Tyler Kirk
to finish the game but had to
call on Pasqual for the finish.
Pasqual got off to a rough
start with a couple walks and
a hit batter but settled down
and got the job done with
Fall River winning the game
11-9.
Fall River will resume
league play against the visiting
Trinity Wolves today at
