Graham
accepts
new post
BY MEG FOX
Supt. Earnie Graham has
accepted a position as superintendent
of the Brittan Elementary
School District in Sutter County.
Graham has been superintendent
of the Fall River Joint Unified
School District for the past nine
years. His contract here ends June
30 and he begins his new job on
July 1.
Graham said his new district
near Yuba City is much smaller and
is one of three that feeds students
into Sutter High School.
He will be overseeing a preschool
through eighth grade district
of about 500 students and 32
teachers.
“It’s a very good district and,
because there’s a slower lifestyle
in an elementary school setting,
I’m looking forward to a little less
stress,” he said.
Graham is interested in improving
student test scores in Brittan
and will also be dealing with the
district’s declining enrollment and
staff salary negotiations.
Graham said he was interested
in Sutter County because he wants
to enter a doctorate degree program
and there are several universities
close by.
In his nine years with the Fall
River JUSD, Graham said he is
most proud of having consolidated
the two Burney Elementary sites
into one school and moving the
District Offi ce from Cassel into the
former Mt. Burney site for better
effi ciency.
He also moved the continuation
site off the Burney High School
campus, centralized Special Education
services, and added a curriculum
specialist to the district’s
staff.
BY MEG FOX
Dr. Timothy Baylink is the
new medical director for Pit
River Health Service, Inc. in
Burney.
As a family practice
physician he will be seeing
patients at Pit River’s outpatient
clinic, as well as having
administrative duties.
He is on the staff at Mayers
Memorial Hospital and will
also do obstetrics and admit
patients for general medical
service, he said.
Baylink was previously
with Intermountain Family
Practice. He started at Pit
River April 8 and Clinic Manager
Diane Jordan said she
has already received calls
from former patients asking
for him.
“They heard he was
coming here and wanted to
know if they could see him
even if they weren’t Native
American. And, of course,
they can,” said Jordan. “While
we have a Native American
emphasis, our doors are
open to everyone.”
Baylink said his relationship
with his patients here
is one of several reasons
that he decided to stay in the
Intermountain area.
“I feel very strongly about
them and the fact that that’s
reciprocated,” he said. “They
have been very supportive of
me and of my staying in the
area.”
His family also enjoys it
here, he said.
“I was tired of being transferred
and we decided to look
around. We found this business
on a family trip to see
Burney Falls,” he said.
What they found was the
former Jerry’s Restaurant
site on Main Street.
The Kleins are employing
about 18 people and are providing
training to make their
business “customer service
oriented,” they said.
“We’ve hired all local help,
except for family”
Their son, Ryan, 20, is
cook and assistant manager.
The Kleins each have
three children of their own
and three children together.
Their son Justin, 13,
and attends Burney Junior-
Senior High School. Their
son Robert, 12, and daughter
Chelsea, 10, are students at
Burney Elementary School.
The children have joined
Little League and the Kleins
enjoy boating, fi shing, snow
skiing, water skiing and
hiking.
“We’re an outdoors family
– if we can get out of here,”
said Darrellyne, referring to
her new business.
Klein had originally
planned to commute to work,
as he’s done in the past.
“I didn’t plan to make
Burney my home, but my
wife liked it here and so we
all moved here,” Klein said.
“We hope to make this our
permanent resident.
“We’ve been hearing
about the area for years
and we think it’s the best
kept secret in California,” the
Kleins said.
LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Thank you
Editor:
Thank you to our brave fi re
fi ghters and neighbors!
Our homes were saved
because of the brave fi re
fi ghters and neighbors that
contained the tragic fi re at
the Ebert home on March 29.
The Bartlett home was
so hot from the intense heat
that it was actually steaming
as the fi re fi ghters sprayed
water on it.
The Murray home was
along side of the fl aming
Ebert home as well.
Because of the heroic
efforts of these brave individuals
our homes were saved.
Thank you with all our
hearts! You are all guardian
Eagle Lake boasts
best rainbow trout
By PAUL WERTZ
EAGLE LAKE-Could this
dot on the earth one day
be looked upon as the primordium
of the world’s best
rainbow trout?
Here and there, a Department
of Fish and Game biologist
whispers such a thought,
but no one says such things
out loud.
After all, there must be
consideration for the feelings
of the other rainbows, the
Shasta strain, the Whitney
strain, the Pit River strain and
others.
Yet, when March rolls
around and hearty, 25-inch
Eagle Lake rainbow trout
fi ght their way from the briny
waters of Eagle Lake up Pine
Creek and into the hands of
DFG fi sh culturists, and give
up nearly 2.3 million eggs to
provide more trout, the talk
begins.
“Eagle Lake rainbow are
in New Zealand, Wyoming,
Montana, and throughout
California,” said Paul Chappell,
department fi shery
biologist in Lassen County.
They are an exceptionally
strong subspecies of rainbow
and they are turning out to be
great additions to more and
more trout waters,” he said.
In three days during late
March, crews from the DFG’s
Crystal Lake Hatchery near
Burney sorted dozens of
Eagle Lake trout that had
negotiated a mile of Pine
Creek and had swum into
Fish and Game’s Pine Creek
trap, a partially submerged
concrete and wooden structure
designed for capturing,
sorting and spawning the
fi sh.
When the short-lived
spawning migration was
over, the crew had reached
its goal of collecting trout
eggs, 2,242,800 this year,
that will turn into fi ngerlingsized
trout for aerial plants in
wilderness lakes, sport-sized
trout planted in dozens of
California waters and a few
select brood fi sh from which
more eggs can be collected
two to four years later.
And, of course, they will
also turn into 180,000 large
Eagle Lake rainbows that will
be returned to Eagle Lake in
spring and fall plants, keeping
the popular trophy trout water
among the most popular of
California lake trout angling
targets.
In addition, full-grown
brood fi sh from prior seasons’
egg collections produce
about 4.2 million eggs annually
at Mt. Shasta Hatchery.
Mt. Shasta, in turn, ships
the eggs to eight other California
hatcheries where they
are raised, then planted in
dozens of California waters
as fi ngerlings or “catchable”
sized trout.
Perhaps the most miraculous
part of the Eagle Lake
rainbow trout story is the fact
that a little over 50 years ago,
the unique rainbow subspecies,
at that time found no
where else in the world but
Eagle Lake, had fallen on
hard times.
In fact, DFG biologists in
the mid 1900s worried that
the fi sh was on the brink of
extinction.
Among the problems
besieging the now revered
rainbow of Eagle Lake was
Eagle Lake itself.
A closed basin remnant of
the Great Basin sea, Eagle
Lake is highly alkaline.
No other trout is known to
be capable of surviving the
lake’s harsh habitat.
During the fi rst half of the
20 th Century, drought, poaching
and water diversions
along Pine Creek, the lake’s
only viable tributary, brought
the rainbow to the brink.
Something had to be done,
DFG biologists of the 1950s
decided.
Fish and Game erected
a temporary trapping facility
in the snow on Pine Creek
upstream of the present trap,
and waited. And waited.
Over a period of a month, a
total of six female trout made
their way up the creek to the
trap.
A few males were collected
and the fi rst artifi cial spawning
and incubation of Eagle
Lake rainbow trout eggs was
underway.
From that handful of fi sh,
in fact notes indicate it may
have been from a solitary
female trout, the DFG has
rebuilt the large lake’s trout
population to a level that
draws anglers from hundreds
of miles away.
Eagle Lake is open to fi shing
from the Saturday preceding
Memorial Day, May 25
this year, through Dec. 31.
The limit is two trout per
day and four in possession.
Natural waves
Our universe is full of wonders.
Among them are the amazing
electromagnetic (e-LEC-tro-mag-NEHtic)
waves.
To better understand these waves,
you might try something unusual, but
we think it will help.
Take a little time to
wave at the objects and
people around you. Waving
at them will remind you that things
and people — without even trying to,
or without even moving — naturally
send out, or emit, waves into the air.
If we could see them,
their waves might look
like this.
Just about everything in the universe
gives off these waves in all directions.
They are all around us. So humans
and objects on Earth and in the sky
are natural sources of these
electromagnetic waves.
Making waves
Through the years, scientists have
discovered how we can make these
invisible electromagnetic waves work
for us.
Scientists found that waves of different
lengths do different things. Different
wavelengths have different “frequencies.”
When waves are very close together, they
have a high frequency.
When they are far apart, they have a low
frequency.
X-ray waves
If we make the wavelengths very
close together with a very
us to make pictures that
doctors use to see what’s
going on inside our bodies.
Microwaves
If we make a wavelength longer, we
can make microwaves
that we can use to cook
our food in our
Radio waves
The longest waves of all are the
radio waves. These special wavelengths
carry pictures and sound. While we
call them “radio” waves, they are also
used for TV and cell phones and other
ways to communicate.
Setting up airwave rules
These radio wavelengths are so
important that the government has set
up a special group, or agency, called the
*Federal Communications Commission.
(*“Federal” has to do with our national
government. A commission is a group that
decides on important matters.)
The FCC, as it is called, sees that
the billions of messages carried through
the air on waves don’t get all mixed up.
For example, each radio station
is assigned a special frequency,
or wavelength, of radio waves.
Stations must be far enough
apart in wavelength so that they
don’t interfere with each other.
A frequency of 1500 AM means these
radio waves can move up and down
1,500,000 times a second. AM is a
special band, or group, of frequencies.
To pick up those waves on your
radio, you have to set your
dial to 1500.
Radio, TV and
cable channels must
get licenses before
they can operate.
The FCC assigns them certain
wavelengths, or frequencies.
The FCC also sets aside “bands”
of radio waves for products
such as remote-control garage
door openers, radio-controlled
toys and cell phones.
If you look on your portable
radio, you might see a label
that begins:
FM is another band
of frequencies.
THIS DEVICE COMPLIES WITH
PART 15 OF THE FCC RULES.
What’s way out there in the universe? Scientists are using
radio waves to find out.
Of all the different types of electromagnetic waves, radio
waves are the longest. They might be as long as a football
field or as short as a football.
The radio waves that occur naturally in the universe are
not manufactured. They are silent. Scientists don’t listen to
them; they study them.
A really, really big telescope
In the mountains of West Virginia is the largest movable
thing on land. It’s a radio telescope. There are other radio
telescopes in other parts of the world, but this is the largest
one that moves.
Rookie Cookie’s Recipe
Fancy Fudge
You’ll need:
• 11/2 cups sugar
• 1 tablespoon butter or margarine
• 1/2 cup evaporated milk
• 2 cups miniature marshmallows
How the radio telescope works
Radio astronomers collect radio waves
from a tiny part of the sky, measure how
strong they are, and then move on. As
they move from point to point, they
slowly build an image of what they are
studying.
1. Radio waves from space bounce off
the main dish.
2. They are reflected to a smaller dish at
the top of the telescope (this is called
a sub-reflector).
3. The signals are then sent to receivers
(much like the radio receivers you
have in your home — only they are
much more sensitive).
4. The faint signals from space are
amplified (made stronger) and sent to
powerful computers that analyze
them, which allows experts to make
images to study.
• 1 (12-ounce) package
semisweet chocolate chips
• 1 cup pecans, chopped
• 1 teaspoon vanilla
What to do:
1. Place sugar, butter or margarine and evaporated milk in a
medium, microwave-safe bowl. Microwave on high for 4 to 6
minutes, or until mixture comes to a boil. Stir halfway through
cooking.
2. Remove from microwave and stir in marshmallows and chocolate
chips. Mix well. Microwave 2 minutes or until smooth. Stir
halfway through cooking.
3. Remove from oven. Stir in pecans and vanilla. Mix well.
4. Spread mixture evenly in a greased 8-by-8-inch pan. Cool and cut
into squares. Makes about 16 pieces.
Collecting Radio Waves From Space
Wow! What a Telescope!
What the telescope does
The telescope’s job is to collect
naturally occurring radio waves. By
studying them, scientists can find out
what is going on way out in space.
Space is filled with radio wave
energy. Planets, stars, galaxies and even
clouds of dust and gas give off radio
waves that can be detected on Earth.
Collecting these waves is important
to astronomers. By studying the data
the telescope gathers, they can find out
information about space that they could
get no other way.
With “optical” telescopes, astronomers
can see only what is actually visible. If
clouds are in the way, or if the sun is
shining, they don’t get a good picture.
This is not the case with radio telescopes.
Quiet, please
Radio signals arriving on Earth from space
are very weak. In fact, they are millions of
times weaker than the manufactured
signals sent out by the radios we listen to.
Because these radio waves from space
are so weak, radio telescopes must be big and
also far away from places where people live.
Such things as microwave ovens,
radio and TV signals, and computers
can interfere with the reception. The
big dish enables the astronomers to
focus the telescope on small areas.
a teacher and a coach in
Wyoming junior-senior high
schools.
Newton’s reasons for
choosing the Intermountain
area are several, but, as the
trustees said of him, he too
believes he’s found a good
match.
“When a superintendent
starts looking around, one
of the most important things
to fi nd is a school board who
wants who you are and what
you are,” he said.
“You don’t always fi nd that
important component.”
Having taken early retirement
from the Wyoming
school system, has given him
“the freedom to work outside
the state and the opportunity
to continue working beyond
my career in Wyoming,” he
Baylink was graduated
from Redlands High School
in Southern California in
1984.
He earned a bachelors
degree in psychology at
the University of California,
Santa Barbara, and it wasn’t
until he was on a ski patrol
that he thought about becoming
a medical doctor.
“I worked at Mammoth Ski
Resort for four years and as
a result of that I decided to
go into medicine. At the time
I was particularly attracted to
emergency room medicine,”
he said.
He entered Loma Linda
School of Medicine, where
he earned his doctorate of
medicine in 1998.
For his residency program,
he said, “I interviewed
all over the United States,
from Yale University (in New
Haven, CT) to Seattle” and
chose Mercy Medical Center
in Redding.
“I met their faculty and staff
and toured the hospital and
fell in love with it.”
He was also interested
because Mercy offered a
community-based residency
and a program that was affi liated
with the University of
California, Davis.
“The lecture series was
awesome and the clinical
experience was also awesome,”
he said.
Baylink said he’s looking
forward to his work at
Pit River. “The staff is very
friendly and effi cient, as is the
administration, and I feel very
comfortable here,” he said.
The feeling is mutual. “Dr.
Baylink is what we’ve needed
here for some time,” Jordan
said.
manslaughter for a two-year
sentence.
Sutherland was offered 20
years, but refused to plead,
Jankowitz said.
Jankowitz credited Shasta
County Sheriff’s detectives
Anthony Bertain of the Burney
station and John Hubbard of
Redding with investigating
and solving the diffi cult case
and assisting at trial.
“Not only do we have
a unsympathetic victim
because he’s a child molester
and a lot of jurors had a problem
with that, but a lot of witnesses
were from the drug
culture, so their credibility
had some issues.”
He said the detectives
worked the case because
a person had been killed.
“No one has the right to be
beaten to death in the middle
of the night.”
The case unfolded on Jan.
27, 2002 when three hunters
found bloody clothing off Pit
6 Road.
Looking further, they saw
a body 60 to 70 feet down
an embankment, Jankowitz
said.
The victim “had one inch
holes through his skull as if
he had been hit on both sides
with a blunt object and he’d
been beaten about the face.”
Bertain and Hubbard found
personal letters with the
victim and went to the return
address in Cottonwood to the
home of Kimberly Raible.
“They searched her house
and overturned a mattress
to fi nd it soaked with blood,”
Jankowitz said.
The detectives learned
that Sparks had planned to
stay with Raible, who was
acquainted with Sparks and
the three suspects.
Taylor and Sutherland had
met up with Sparks and taken
him to Raible’s home.
Raible was apparently not
home but at a party where
the suspects related what
had happened and asked if
she knew Sparks had served
time as child molester,
according to Jankowitz.
She wanted Sparks out of
her house and the suspects
agreed to help.
”What we now know is that
they took a pipe wrench with
them,” said Jankowitz.
“Carla went into the house
and was doing dope with
Sparks,” he said. “She said
she heard a thump, he collapsed,
and she ran out of
the house. She said she saw
Shane (Taylor) swing something
over his head.”
They left in Sutherland’s
car and went back to the
party. An hour later, Taylor
and Sutherland borrowed
someone’s Ford Explorer and
returned to Raible’s house for
the bedding and the body,
Jankowitz said.
They drove to Big Bend
and dumped Sparks.
They knew about the Big
Bend area because, coincidentally,
one of the three
hunters who found Sparks,
was the brother of one of the
suspects.
“He used to go there to
dump dead sheep and my
theory is he may have mentioned
it to his brother,” said
Jankowitz.
The detectives put the
case together by matching
fi bers found in Big Bend with
the Ford Explorer. Also blood
at the scene matched the
victim’s.
“The detectives worked
on this case for a year and
we couldn’t have gotten this
result without their efforts,”
Jankowitz said.
said.
He and his wife Kathy
have a son and daughter who
are both in college.
Kathy Newton has a
degree in anthropology and
has been the social services
director for a 59-bed nursing
home for the past 10 years.
In deciding to move on,
Newton said they fi rst looked
to the Pacifi c Northwest
because their daughter is a
student at the University of
Oregon in Eugene.
“As we were traveling
back and forth, we began to
branch out and began to see
Northern California for the
neat place it is,” he said.
“And, the more we came to
know the Intermountain area,
the more excited we got.”
He agrees with a real
estate brochure he received
describing this area as the
“best kept secret in California.”
As someone involved in
education for more than 30
years, Newton wants to continue
to work on the issues
that face K-12 students, their
teachers, parents, support
staff and the trustees.
“I’m a K through 12 educator
and I want to keep doing
it,” he said.
“The needs of this district
are pretty much what my
experience base has prepared
me to deal with,” he
said.
As an educator in districts
of similar size to Fall River’s,
Newton said, “I have developed
an understanding of the
advantages and challenges
of districts this size.
“An administrator has to
be a bit more of a ‘jack-of-alltrades’
in a smaller district,
but that is not a problem for
me,” he said.
Newton describes his
leadership style as teambased
problem solving.
“I like to work with others
to solve issues. It’s a team
approach, more than what I
think should happen.
“A tighter, more focused
team can be created in a
smaller district and become
a clear asset in the district,”
he said.
Newton began his career
in education in Sheridan,
where he taught junior high
school science for 11 years
and coached football, basketball
and track for 10 years.
As a teacher, he was president
of the Sheridan Central
Education Association for
one year.
He has also been a consultant
and facilitator for
Sweetwater’s interest-based
negotiations process and was
a co-leader in an initiative to
revise the state’s high school
graduation requirements.
He is working on a doctorate
degree in K-12 curriculum
and instruction. He holds a
Masters degree in Educational
Administration and a
Bachelor of Science degree
in Science Education from
the University of Wyoming,
Laramie.
He is president of the
Fire Chief Sullivan
asked to come back
for 2 more weeks
BY MEG FOX
With the Burney Fire
Department fast becoming a
riderless horse and the front
offi ce temporarily closed, Fire
Chief Larry Sullivan agreed
to come back on duty for at
least two weeks.
Commissioner Donna Sylvester
telephoned Chief Sullivan
with the board’s urgent
request in the middle of their
April 10 meeting at the fi re
hall.
“I would rather pay the
chief than have the whole
department fall apart,” said
Commissioner Sally Preheim.
“He accepted graciously
and will resume his duties,
effective 8 a.m. tomorrow
morning for two weeks,” Sylvester
announced.
“He didn’t even hesitate,”
noted Harold Van Cleave, the
department’s former battalion
chief.
Staff has diminished
during the past year and the
troubled fi re department has
been without a fi re chief since
December, when Sullivan left
after a closed session personnel
meeting. The board
announced he would use his
accumulated vacation time
until his retirement in May.
The call for the Chief’s
immediate return came as a
result of Lt. Rick Moore needing
some time to be with his
newborn daughter, Administrative
Secretary Lenetta
Harris being on vacation, and
accumulating issues that only
a chief can handle.
Lts. Jason Moore and Jody
Hughes said in January they
would be available for duty to
help Moore, but apparently
are not now able to.
also be closer to their son
Albert, III, a student at Cal
their daughter Wendy, who is
in the construction industry in
of Sweetwater
County School District No. 2
in Green River, Wy.
changed and we don’t have
that coverage,” Commissioner
Donna Caldwell said.
“I’m very concerned. And
I’m very concerned about
the legal ramifi cations of not
having a leader.”
The commissioners are
working towards their goal of
hiring a new chief by July or
August, while the To Do list
that only a Chief can do gets
longer.
In a matter that needed
a fi re chief’s advice – and
signature – the commissioners
talked about whether
or not they wanted to sign
a form from their accountant,
Charles Pillon, CPA,
of Burney, pertaining to the
release of documents used in
his audit report for fi scal year
ending June 30, 2001.
Commissioner Lynn Miller
wasn’t ready to sign at all.
“I have a ton of questions
on this. I don’t know where
these numbers come from.
We have to sign this and I’m
not signing it ‘til I know what
it says.”
Commissioners also questioned
Pillon’s statement with
the audit concerning his April
2 letter about “internal control
over fi nancial reporting.”
“Where is this letter?”
asked Commissioner Ann
Walker and Board President
Sylvester then made copies
to give to the board and audience
saying she had only
received the letter that day.
In the letter, Pillon said
“there are too many accounting
jobs performed by one
person with no known effective
oversight or review by
management.”
Miller agreed that the
offi ce needs internal controls,
but that the answer was
working with the secretary
to improve the system, not
hiring a second person as
Pillon suggested.
He also recommended
that the district implement
an effective budget to actual
review process…”so that no
actual amounts exceed the
budgeted amount for the
fi scal year.”
The commissioners
weren’t ready to accept the
audit, either, and agreed to
ask Pillon to the next board
meeting to explain it.
A fi re chief was deemed
necessary to help Meryl
Guiles, a resident of the
Black Ranch Road area outside
of town.
She once again came to
a board meeting to ask the
commissioners what they
were doing about rising
insurance rates for fi re district
residents who live more than
fi ve miles from a fi re department
and more than 1,000
feet from a hydrant.
“Someone needs to do
something. It’s not doing me
any good to be in this district,”
said Guiles.
“We’ve tabled this until
August when we have a new
chief on line…” said Sylvester,
adding that the board
does not have the expertise
to deal with the Insurance
Services Offi ce (ISO) and
inspections of the area.
The absence of a fi re chief
was also an issue during a
discussion on updating the
rules and regulations.
“We have no hiring policy
whatsoever,” said Commissioner
Walker. “And we
also need an in-house hiring
policy.”
Sylvester decided that,
along with the issue of background
checks, county counsel
should draft the whole
policy.
A chief was needed to
help the commissioners with
a new EMS Support Offi cer.
The board approved the
concept of the position, but
wasn’t qualifi ed to approve
someone for the post.
The commissioners had
questions that couldn’t be
answered at the meeting
concerning the duty roster
and payment for the hours
that Howard Fincher and
Courtney Cleckler have
already put in.
“I get tired of hearing
we don’t have a chief,” said
Walker.
Student shares opinion on state land buy
EDITORIAL
River High School Senior
Project in journalism)
Vote yes for Proposition
40, for Clean Water, Clean
Air, Safe Neighborhood
Parks, and Coastal Protection.
Who wouldn’t want to vote
for this? Of course people
want these things, but what
it doesn’t say is that it gives
the state government power
to spend $2.6 billion on privately
owned land like the
Shintaffer Ranch.
Small towns like Fall
River don’t need cleaner air
or better water, in fact, by
buying the Shintaffer Ranch
the State of California will
ultimately pollute the water
by letting the levies that separate
the land and river go.
When the levies are
broken, the water level is lowered
resulting in an increase
in the water temperature. As
the temperature rises, the
mosquito and insect population
increases.
Mosquitoes bring many
problems. Not only are they
troublesome, but they also
carry diseases.
Public Health agencies
believe that mosquitoes
can transmit encephalitis
and other harmful diseases
throughout the world. Mosquito
control issues was
discussed at the February
13 meeting in Fall River
Mills about the purchase of
the Shintaffer Ranch by the
surrounding landowners and
Ranchers.
It was stated that the state
Department of Fish and
Game would take care of the
mosquitoes by spraying them.
But spraying mosquitoes pollutes
the air and since it will
be over water, spraying also
will pollute the water.
The water is an important
part of this community. Not
only do more than 35 families
drink right out of the river, it
is also used by children of
Race to the finish
all ages as a summertime
activity.
The families who drink out
of this water, including my
own, will need new ways of
getting water to their homes.
The increase of both temperature
and bacteria will make it
unsatisfactory even to bathe
in. The increase in bacteria
will not only affect the water
but also the air. The entire
area around the Shintaffer
Ranch will have the stench
of a mucky swamp. That’s
an enormous difference from
the clean crisp air we have
today.
One of the stated reasons
for buying the Shintaffer
property was to create a
wildlife habitat. I live directly
across from the Shintaffer
Ranch and, as I look out my
window, I can see water covered
with beautiful birds, the
home and habitat for more
than 20 species.
Another reason given for
acquiring the land is to set
up a place for fi sherman to
launch their boats. Once
Athletes from Burney, Fall River and Big Valley high schools are slated to
fi sherman have access every
two miles. This isn’t needed;
Fall River already has numerous
places to launch boats.
My father, a river front
landowner, has not once
refused his boat launch to
anyone who has called and
asked fi rst. There are many
places along the river like
this.
Once the government
owns our water, they can say
who goes on it and what kind
of boat is allowed.
Fall River doesn’t need
hundreds of boats on our
river. The ecosystem of our
river has stayed preserved
from its natural springs at
Ahjumawi all the way to the
Fall River dam. It needs to
stay preserved.
With boats comes garbage,
waves that erodes the
levees, and they may bring
other harmful prospects that
our water has not yet been
subjected to.
The government is buying
up California. Once all of
our land is taken, what else
is going to be affected? The
government takes our money
and then buys our own land.
They are slowly going to buy
and control everything.
If money needs to be spent
to save our resources, spend
it in LA instead of Northern
California were the ecosystem
will be destroyed.
Even though Proposition
40 passed a few weeks ago
and the State bought the
Shintaffer property, I strongly
believe that our community
needs to stand together
and make sure that not only
our river rights, but also our
rights to clean water are
upheld. We need to fi ght for
the levees to be maintained
and for the purity of our water
and air.
