In Your Garden
February in your garden
From Irene Turner
Keep up the water to the plants, watering in the
cool of the night or morning. Mulch where you
can.
Now is the time to plant vegetables for winter
harvesting.
Look out for fruit fly – if your fruit fly traps are
full, you may need to spray your fruit trees with
Lebaycide.
Lightly prune your roses and give them a good
feed of rose fertiliser to produce more flowers
for Autumn.
Vegetable Seeds:
Cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli & Brussels
sprouts. They need soil containing plenty of
compost and well rotted animal manure, also a
light dressing of lime before planting. Soon as
the plants are growing, give a regular feed of
liquid fertilizer or weak tea from chicken
manure or cow manure that have soaked in a
bin full of water.
Seeds of carrot, parsnip, celery, kohlrabi,
lettuce, parsley, radish & turnip can also be
sown.
Flowers:
You can plant now for winter flowering
seedlings of pansy, viola, stocks, poppies &
alyssum. Also calendula, carnation,
polyanthus, larkspur, linaria, snapdragon,
statice & verbena.
Bulbs:
Bulbs for spring flowering can be planted now.
Tulip bulbs need to be placed in your vegetable
crisper in your fridge for 1 month prior to
planting.
You can grow bulbs that flower in late Summer
& early Autumn – lillium, dahlia, naked lady,
pineapple lily & crocus.
Blood lilies (haemanthus, Scadoxus spp.) so
called for their blood red flowers, also flower on
bare stems.
Naked ladies (amaryllis belladonna) put up a
long stem and flower, and then produce the
leaves. Naked ladies may survive in an old
garden long after other plants have died.
When planting naked ladies, which have a
bulb as big as a large potato, select a sunny
spot with well drained soil. This goes for all the
bulbs.
Jacobean lilies
(sprekelia
formossissima) usually
flower with their leaves
in Summer.
Pineapple lily
(eucomis autumnal)
is a tall striking
Summer flowering
bulb suitable for a
range of climates.
Pineapple-like tufts
grow on top of each
column of flowers.
Stems can grow from 30cm to almost 1m tall,
and have many star-shaped white, pale
yellow, green or purple flowers clustered up a
stout stem. The flowers appear at the same
time as the green wavy-edged leaves.
Dahlias should be producing buds now and
flowering from February to March. They may
need more tying up the stakes as they grow.
They like a well drained spot; feed now to help
the growing flowers. #Dahlia tubers contain a
sugar called Atlantic Starch; and prior to the
discovery of insulin, this sugar was given to
diabetics to help them metabolise
carbohydrates.
Black Spot Fungicide
Place one litre of full cream or the equivalent
of powdered milk in a mixing bowl.
Add one teaspoon of bicarbonate soda and
one litre of water.
Add a pinch of Condy’s Crystals and mix.
Use diluted as a spray.
New technology helps fight old enemy in Tablelands LHPA
Remote camera technology is helping the Tablelands LHPA rangers in their efforts to protect local
livestock from wild dog attacks.
With camera technology now more affordable and sophisticated than ever, a new generation of
rangers are using remote digital cameras to assist them trapping wild dogs, combined with the
traditional skills and cunning used by dog trappers.
Goulburn-based Tablelands LHPA ranger Grant Eccles says he is already seeing the benefits of
the camera technology after setting up a motion activated camera on a property which had
experienced wild dog attacks on livestock.
“We were able to determine that two dogs were involved in the sheep slaughter, that they were
crossbred dogs with similar markings (most likely litter mates), and over several days the camera
recorded the dogs using a regular path,” Mr Eccles said.
“In the past, we would have baited a large area around the killing location and assumed our job
was done when the baits were taken with dog footprints nearby.
“In this case, however, the camera recorded the bait being taken by a fox, with the dog prints left
during a cursory inspection of the bait station – so we knew we had to change our strategy to trap
the wild dogs.
At the northern end of the district Josh Parr, Tablelands LHPA ranger based in Bathurst, has used
the digital cameras to locate a breeding pair of wild dogs with eight pups.
“If you rush in when the first young dog is sighted without assessing the whole situation, you risk
dispersing the dogs,” Mr Parr explained.
“The camera findings lead to a better planned and coordinated operation, which in this instance
allowed us to completely eliminate the problem.”
LHPA rangers in all areas are keen to work with landholders to combat wild dog problems.
Landholders are urged to report any wild dog attacks or sightings to their local LHPA office.
Targeted pig control success in Tablelands LHPA
Feral pig numbers have been reduced across 10,000 hectares of private land east of Taralga as
part of a strategic control program in the Tablelands Livestock Health and Pest Authority.
The control project was a joint effort between the Tablelands LHPA, the Hawkesbury Nepean
Catchment Management Authority and 20 landholders on properties between Bannaby and the
Wombeyan Caves.
Tablelands LHPA ranger, Grant Eccles says that while the project involved controlling all feral
animals in the region, feral pigs were the main target.
“As this area has a relatively low pig population, the aim of the control work was to ensure we
maintain the low-density numbers, as pig populations have the potential to double in a year,” Mr
Eccles said.
“The project accounted for 27 feral pigs over the past six months, most of which were trapped
using grain for bait. This will result in reducing the pig population and interrupting their breeding
cycle, which will minimise their impact on primary production and conservation areas.
“We also employed the use of a contract trapper who caught six wild dogs in the Taralga and
Wombeyan Caves region.”
Mr Eccles says there were enormous benefits in taking a coordinated approach to controlling pest
animals. “Rangers, CMA officers and landholders worked together to implement consistent and
widespread pest animal control in the Taralga area, which is the best approach for both control
and cost effectiveness,” Mr Eccles said.
“The cooperation of the 20 local landholders was vital to the success of the project – we wouldn’t
have been able to run the project without their support and involvement.
“While it is ultimately all landholders’ responsibility to control pest animals on their land, the LHPA
assisted landholder efforts by working with the Hawkesbury Nepean CMA to source additional
funding and resources to implement a wider control program.”
Hawkesbury Nepean CMA
catchment coordinator, Aaron
Smith says the reduction in
feral pig and wild dog numbers
in these areas will greatly
benefit the biodiversity of the
region, as well as local
landholders and the broader
community.
“Pigs are highly destructive
animals, they trample and
uproot wetlands and soils,
feed on crops and pasture and
they damage farm
infrastructure including fences
and dams. They also carry
diseases which threaten both
native and farm animals,” Mr
Smith said.
