Hilton Hotels has revealed that it has delivered
energy savings of over 10% in 2007 across its
portfolio of more than 80 properties in Europe.
Water consumption also fell by 5%, the equivalent
to nearly 75 Olympic sized swimming pools or
a staggering 187 million litre water bottles.
Hilton has also managed to reduce its CO 2
emissions per guest night by nearly 11%
avoiding a total of 10,200 tonnes of CO 2 being
emitted by its hotels, equivalent to removing
2,200 cars off the road.
Hilton has succeeded in making these reductions
through the implementation of its Europe-wide
environmental sustainability initiative known as
we care! Launched across Europe & Africa in
January 2006, the programme was established
to encourage hotels and team members to
introduce initiatives and best practices
focussing on making genuine and measurable
reductions in energy consumption and CO 2
emissions, water consumption, waste
generation and chemical usage.
The Hotel Carbon Index Company has
launched an environmental benchmark that
it claims will become the industry standard
classification for carbon emissions. CarePar,
which stands for Carbon Emission Per Available
Room, will allow guests and travel organisers to
understand the emissions involved in their hotel
usage, as well as help hoteliers and venues
to ensure they achieve higher individual ratings
and demonstrate that they are reducing their
emissions.
Acting as the central conduit of information,
The Hotel Carbon Index Company will be
supplied information by hoteliers and venues,
such as room sizes, fuel bills and recycling
initiatives. The information will then be
downloaded onto a central database, managed
and overseen by The Carbon Consultancy, to
enable the CarePar to be produced.

lodging sector and one that has been
embraced wholeheartedly, from hoteliers and
buyers of accommodation to travellers alike.
‘Hoteliers and venues can also actively seek
to improve their CarePar on an ongoing basis.’
