Draw PR x axis <strong>and</strong> QS<br />

x axis.<br />

Also draw PT QS.<br />

Clearly, RS = x2 – x1 = PT.<br />

QT = y2 – y1<br />

PQT is a right triangle. Using Pythagoras Theorem<br />

(PQ) 2 = (PT) 2 + (QT) 2<br />

= (x2 – x1) 2 + (y2 – y1) 2<br />

or PQ = (1)<br />

This is referred to as distance formula.<br />
