Intraspecific (within species) competition: the Verhulst-Pearl Equation dN/dt = rN(K-N)/K • dN/dt is the rate of growth of a species, or the slope of the line. • In a one species system, the quantity (K-N)/K is the intraspecific competition component because as N approaches K, the change in the population size, dN/dt, approaches 0, but when N is small, dN/dt approaches 1, the maximum rate of population increase. • In other words, individuals of the same species are limiting the population size as the population approaches the carrying capacity.
