What is all this “Jewish Stuff” for?
We are about to hire a new Director of education. In the process, we are reviewing
all the steps involved in going to religious school: getting a bar or bat
mitzvah, maybe getting confirmed, joining Kadima and USY and…
Wait a second – and then what? Our Jewish training is over? We’ve passed
religious boot camp, we’re Jewish adults and now we can relax? If so, what was
our religious training for?
Believe it or not, real life. There’s a famous book out, All I Really Need to Know
I Learned in Kindergarten, by Robert Fulghum. These are Jewish concepts, put
into children’s lives. Here are some examples:
“Share everything. Play fair.”
Holiness Codes (Chapter 19 in Leviticus)
“Don’t hit people.”
Book of Numbers – “When one man strikes another…”
“Don’t take things that aren’t yours.”
Don’t Steal
“Take a nap every afternoon.”
Shabbos schluf
“Remember the little seed in the styrofoam cup:
The roots go down and the plant goes up and nobody
really knows how or why, but we are all like that.”
And God said, “Let the earth sprout vegetation: seedbearing
plants, fruit trees of every kind on earth that bear
fruit with the seed in it.” And it was so. Chapter 1 in Genesis
With respect to Mr. Fulghum, learning during our youngest years is essential,
but not enough. Some of our Jewish values we learn in kindergarten, some from
the rest of school, some from our families, some from our friends… the list goes
on touching all our experiences and acquaintances – especially as adults. Judaism
puts it in perspective by telling us it’s not enough to learn values; we must
use them in the world we live in.
We learn from all types of sources to protect the environment; Judaism tells us
that it’s because God created the world for us to live in, we are God’s partners in
caring for it and we owe it to the next generations to leave the world in better
shape than we found it.
We learn from all types of sources about justice; Judaism tells us that because
God is a God of justice and we are created in God’s image, so we must emulate
God and act justly.
We learn from all types of sources about caring for ourselves; Judaism teaches
us that caring for ourselves is essential, but is part of a greater concept – being
a healthy part of our community: “If I am not for myself, who will be for me? If I am
only for myself, who/what am I? And if not now, when?” [Hillel]
After our new Director of Education gets settled, we will strive to finish that first
paragraph by exploring new avenues of education to engage our religious school
students, teens, families, singles and seniors.
May we all move from strength to strength.
“Rabbi Joe” Mendelsohn
2 . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Temple Israel Messenger
My first President’s column will seem like deja vue to some of you. But, I thought
it would worthwhile to restate my speech from the recent congregational meeting.
As you are aware, we elected a new board of directors and officers. Here are some
excerpts from my remarks after the election:
I’m reminded of a story about the late William F. Buckley. Some time ago, Mr.
Buckley made a symbolic run for mayor of New York City. During the campaign a
reporter asked Mr. Buckley: “Sir if you are elected what would be the first thing
that you would do.” Mr. Buckley thought for a moment and said: “the first thing
I would do if elected…would be to demand a recount!” Well the first thing I wish
to do is not demand a recount but to thank my wife Iris...for being so wonderful
and understanding.
My grandmother’s brother, or should I say, my great uncle...Louis Reisman, of
blessed memory, an architect, helped to design and build this synagogue. 1
remember my uncle Louis very well and talking with him about his work. He
designed many houses throughout this city. He said: “architecture is not about
bricks.. .but creating comfort for people.” Our synagogue is unmatched in its
architectural beauty. But, the true strength of this congregation is found in the
hopes and dreams of each of us. We come together as one...to pray...to share in
simchas. . .to mourn the loss of beloved family members and friends....to celebrate
the Jewish holidays...to learn more about ourselves and our traditions in
our religious school and adult education classes…to enjoy the many special
events that are planned for us throughout the year…to find spiritual comfort.
Helping us on this journey, we are blessed to have many dedicated people: our
beloved Rabbi Mendelsohn and Cantor Aronzon...our religious school leaders
and teachers...our office professionals...the exceptional individuals who so graciously
serve as our officers, board members and committee members...and for
the past two years, especially, our president David Fallk. I know of few individuals
more devoted to the Jewish people than David. As president, he has brought
consensus and strength to many significant challenges. His accomplishments
on behalf of this congregation are numerous and he has contributed to making
Temple a better place…not just in improvements to the sanctuary but more importantly
to our congregation’s religious foundation. David thank you for a job
well done.
For over 80 years Temple has taken this occasion, the installation of its officers
and board of directors to renew itself. I’d like to conclude by recalling an excerpt
from a sermon by Rabbi Shoop, of blessed memory. In this message, Rabbi
Shoop sought to define a religious community. He wrote: “We are grateful for a
community distinct and distinguished, trusted for its loyalty…respected for its
diversity, esteemed for its traditions…valued for its aspirations.”
It is with this sense of purpose and duty that we join each other once again to
follow these precepts. To do all that we can to help and support our synagogue.
So that Temple Israel will be what it is and more importantly what it always will
be…a loving House of the Lord.
This year, we will once again have a choir for the
High Holidays. My first attempt at conducting
the Temple Israel choir was last year. It was
interesting for me to work with the singers
because some of them had never sung in a choir.
Since the singers had nice voices and great
desires, I was very hopeful of the future. They
ended up doing a good job. Because the choir
members are already familiar with the material,
this year's practices are running more smoothly.
Our rehearsals are every Tuesday and Thursday
at 7:00 pm, and Sundays at 10:00 am. Anyone
who has a good voice is welcome to join us. The
choir will sound fuller if we have more singers in
the main sanctuary.
Cantor Vladimir Aronzon
Wear White on Yom Kippur
It has become the custom to wear white clothes
in Israel and is fast becoming the custom in the
Diaspora, either in order to resemble the angels
or because white is the color of purity. Some say
since it is the color of shrouds it will inspire repentance.
Many choose to wear a white robe
called kittel.
A room full of white is a beautiful sight. Everyone
is equal – while one has to look closely to
see the differences, it becomes evident that also
in the sight of God we are equal and those distinctions
that one sees up close represent the
uniqueness of individuals. While asking God for
forgiveness, it is the time for humility and introspection,
not a time to bring attention to one’s
outer façade (clothing). This year, please wear
white on Yom Kippur.

I would like to thank the many members of Temple Israel Sisterhood who have
become involved in the support of the Torah Fund for the Women’s League of
Conservative Judaism. I have volunteered to lead the way as we show our support
for the future of Rabbinic education here and abroad.
During the past two weeks I have been able to speak to a large portion of the
women involved in many different capacities here at Temple Israel and have been
pleased with the response. If I have not been able to speak with you, know that
Sisterhood is now selling Torah Fund pins. Women all over the world wear these
pins on the High Holy Days. During Yom Kippur at Temple Israel, our pin wearers
will be recognized for their contribution.
The pins cost $180 and may be paid off at $18 a month or paid in a lump
Jewish Family Service Preparing Cookbook
Send Your Recipes
Do you have a favorite meal you always prepare for that "special"
company? A grown child's favorite dish from his/her mother's
kitchen? Calling all the great chefs of NEPA--we're compiling a
cookbook to benefit JFS, and your best RECIPES are NEEDED
for consideration!!! Below is an Internet link to a recipe collection
sheet that you may print out, fill in, and return to JFS at:
615 Jefferson Ave, Suite 204
Scranton, PA 18510.
http://www.morriscookbooks.com/dc/tns10/
recipeCollection.pdf
If you prefer, we have forms available at the JFS office
OR
you may send all your information in an EMAIL to JFS at:
info@jfsoflackawanna.org
Please try to follow directions very carefully, and THANK
YOU in advance!
~~This project can be a tremendous success if everyone
participates--and look--it won't cost you a thing!~~
Please note: No copyrighted recipes (perhaps from your favorite
cookbook?), even thought we're sure they're wonderful. We
have a feeling the ones you have scratched out on tattered
papers are absolutely the best! Not every recipe can be used
due to spacial limitations within each section of the cookbook
so please submit your recipes as soon as possible so you stand
the best chance of being included in this spectacular new
cookbook!
Thank you,
Bring Groceries for the Food Pantry
Help Those in Need
As we read about the downturn in the economy
and the increasing number of people without
jobs, many of us wonder how we can help. One
of the many ways is to bring non-perishable
food to the shopping cart inside the chapel entrance.
If the food is kosher, it will go to the kosher
food pantry at Jewish Family Service. If
not, it will go to another local food pantry. When
your local supermarket has items on sale, buy
an extra and bring it to Temple.
Come to our Daily Minyanim
Come support Temple Israel with your presence! Temple Israel is proud to hold
daily services, both morning and evening. You don’t have to read Torah, read
Hebrew or even pray – just being with us allows those in mourning to say
kaddish and gives the community the opportunity to daven all the prayers.
Join us as we share rituals that have and will endure for centuries. Meet new
friends and greet old ones. Comfort someone in mourning or be comforted in
your grief. We make a place where one can talk with others and with God.
See the box on the back cover for minyan times.
Mazal Tov to our 2008-2009 Bnai Mitzvah
Do You Need Transportation for the
High Holy Days?
Call a taxi on us!
Thanks to Yvette Brauner and her family, the
Albert Brauner Special Needs Fund has been
established to help seniors in our congregation
afflicted with Alzheimer’s, dementia, or
other problems that affect their ability to live
independently of assisted living or nursing
homes. The first use for this fund is a taxi
fund. Temple Israel has an account with
McCarthy Flowered Cabs. If you would like to
come to Shabbat services, adult education or
any other Temple function and need transportation,
simply call the company at 344-5000
and tell them you want to be taken to Temple
Israel. It’s as simple as that. The driver will
pick you up and the Temple will pay.
TREE OF LIFE
A gift of a leaf on our Tree of Life is a perfect
way to honor family and friends on the
important occasions in their lives.
For birthdays or anniversaries or other
simchas, call Carol Nogi at 587-5453
