What do Rosh HaShanah and Elections
Have in Common
As we enter the fall, I find much more conversation about the elections than Rosh
HaShanah. I must admit – I’m not surprised. After all, the last president’s actions will
affect our country’s economy for at least twenty years and we need someone who can
turn it around. We need independent energy, good education and comprehensive
health care for everyone and we need to regain our economic position in the world.
In Judaism, our leader is lifetime – past, present and future. During Rosh HaShanah,
we ask God for a good year in the Book of Life. What do we need for a good year We
need independent energy, good education and comprehensive health care for everyone
and we need to regain our economic position in the world. We need the strength
and wisdom to make the right choices and the strength and wisdom to deal with
whatever comes our way.
Judaism is about self and community. It is about finding ways to nurture and care for
oneself and one’s community. As Hillel said, “If I am not for myself, who will be for
me If I am only for myself, who/what am I (And) if not now, when” The principles
learned from Judaism are not only for personal conduct within the home and synagogue
– they are for interacting with the community as well. The criteria we hold for
ourselves are the same criteria we should hold for others.
What do Rosh HaShanah and elections have in common They are both opportunities
to call upon ourselves to decide to make the coming year a better year.
As always, as we prepare for the year 5769, Linda and I wish to apologize to each and
every one of you in the words of our tradition: “If we have hurt anyone willingly or
unknowingly, or through our actions or inaction caused someone to be hurt this past
year, we apologize and ask for forgiveness. We ask that you accept this statement as
being given of our own free will and as being genuine, coming from ourselves, and not
from any situation forcing us to publicly state this. Linda also joins me in wishing each
and every one of you, “L’shana Tovah u’m’tukah u’briah” — a good, sweet and
healthy year in the book of life.
THE NEW YEAR TRADITIONS
Tradition. It is traditional at this time of year for a
synagogue president to wish the members of
the congregation, our clergy, and our staff a
healthy and happy New Year. This I do without
any hesitation on behalf of myself, Rhonda,
Becky and Murray.
Tradition. It is traditional at this time of year for a
synagogue president to remind the
congregation of what has occurred during the
past year. Allow me to summarize some of our
high points. The response to the revelation
concerning the condition of our roof was
gratifying. Unfortunately, we could not fully
assess the extent of what would be needed for
some time. While we now have resolved most
of the cost and procedural issues regarding the
roof, over the summer, problems have also
arisen with our heating system, and we shall be
adding those figures into a capital campaign to
assure our continued ability to maintain the
Temple’s physical structure
Fortunately, not all events have been so trying
on either our finances or our human resources.
We began the year with High Holy Days services
followed by a Torah Tour that created a
great stir among those who participated and
came to celebrate on Simchat Torah. Our
Chanukah events had a similar outcome as did
the joint program with Temple Hesed for Tu
B’Shevat. Purim and Passover had great participation
and we ended the holiday year with
another joint program that combined prayer and
study with both Rabbis Mendelsohn and Swartz
on Shavuoth. Our Hebrew School completed
its year successfully thanks to the dedication of
its faculty and coordinator and assistance from
parents and the Rabbi. The Rabbi, Cantor and
Cantor Emeritus all provided and continue to
offer stimulating educational courses for adults.
Tradition. It is traditional at this time of year to
look to the future. We hope to complete the external
repairs to the Temple and to restore those
interior places that have shown the effects of
the damage. Both the Rabbi and Cantor have
committed themselves to enhancement of our
services and a new choir has been formed. We
What to Do During The Holy Day / Holiday Period
Judaism celebrates the new year with a series of holidays lasting through most of
the month of Tishrei. The etymology of holiday stems from “holy day,” a much
more accurate description of our Days of Awe – Rosh HaShanah and Yom Kippur.
Take time to reassess your personal thoughts and actions. Reexamine your
relationship with your family, friends and the community. Pay debts and apologize
to those you have hurt – help prepare our lives for a good year before asking
God for a good inscription in the Book of Life. If everyone does this, the community
becomes repaired. Come for the first Yizkor service of the year on Yom
Kippur.
Immediately following Yom Kippur we are reminded what God did for our people
by celebrating Sukkot: “You shall live in booths seven days; all citizens in Israel
shall live in booths in order that future generations may know that I made the
Israelite people live in booths when I brought them out of Egypt; I am the Lord
your God.” [Lev. 23:42,43] This holiday is to be celebrated!! The rituals involved
in the sukkah and the synagogue are centered around celebrating our freedom
from slavery. Come shake a lulav and have a meal in the sukkah. During Sukkot
we continue asking God for a good year and express our contrition by chanting
hoshanot.
Shemini Atzeret is explained in a midrash. Rabbi Isaac Klein explains in his book,
A Guide to Religious Jewish Practice, “When the children of Israel, after having
spent a long holiday period in worship and rejoicing, are about to resume their
regular daily life, God says to them, ‘It is difficult for me to part with you. Tarry a
while longer. Stay another day.’ Hence the name Shemini Atzeret, for the word
atzeret means ‘to tarry or to hold back’ (quoted by Rashi on Lev. 23:36).” Come
for services and the second Yizkor service of the year.
Simhat Torah is the logical conclusion to this set of holidays. We are still
celebrating our redemption from Israel when post-geonic rabbis add a holiday to
celebrate the concluding portion of the Torah. This causes us to combine all the
reasons to rejoice into one final giant celebration: honoring Torah, honoring
members of the congregation, inviting all the children up for an aliyah, celebrating
in the synagogue and in the home. Please join us as we honor Jerry Klein as
our Hatan Torah and Barry Propper as our Hatan Breishit.
This series of holy days is a statement to God: “You freed us from slavery and
chose us to be Your people. Your part of our brit, our mutual holy contract, is to
be there for us, therefore please write us for a good year in the Book of Life.” Our
part of the brit is to participate.
“L’shana Tova tikataivu v’taikhataimu”—May we all be inscribed and sealed
for a good year in the Book of Life.
2 . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
I am now in my tenth year of being a cantor at
Temple Israel. In July1999, I assumed all of the
responsibilities of my position as Cantor. I started serious
preparation for the High Holy Days, teaching Bar and Bat Mitzvah students, as
well as rehearsing with Geri Berg, the choir director. Those days were a great
challenge to me as I worked day and night to improve my professionalism.
My entire family had to overcome many challenges. My children Leo and Sasha
had to adapt to a new culture with a new language. For an entire year my wife
Mila studied English intensively at Marywood University to be able to get
accepted into the pre-physician assistant program. Afterwards she completed
the Physician Assistant program and now has a wonderful job as a Physician
Assistant at the Temple Residency medical office in Jermyn.
In 2005 my daughter Elizabeth was born. She was named after my mother, who
passed away in November of 2003. Even though my mother only lived here for
three years, she was a very loyal patriot of the United States. Since then, I and
the rest of my family are proud to have become United States citizens.
Leo and Sasha attended the United Hebrew Institute in Kingston. This fall Leo
will attend the University of Scranton, and Sasha will be going to Scranton High
School. Leo and Sasha celebrated their Bar and Bat Mitzvahs in August of 2002
and in November of 2007, respectively.
I consider myself a very lucky person. God has blessed me with a wonderful
family, of which I am very proud. When I came here in 1999, I became a part of
the Temple Israel family. From the very beginning to today, all the congregants
have become very close to me. All of my achievements at the synagogue were
due to their warmth and helpfulness.
I learned a lot about being a cantor through the lessons I gave to the adults and
younger members on chanting the Haftorah and reading the Torah.
I am now working with our new High Holy Day choir. I am also preparing a new
album dedicated to the 15 th year of my cantorial career and to my 10 th anniversary
as a cantor in Scranton. This CD will contain various genres of Jewish music.
Thank you to everyone who helped me adapt to life in Scranton. I wish all of you
a sweet and happy new year of 5769. May you all be inscribed in the Book of Life.
Selihot 5769 – Can Israel and
Palestine Co-Exist
Selihot is an integral part of the High Holy Days,
recognizing that for one to receive forgiveness,
one must forgive – not just God, but each other
as well. How can this happen when two groups
are at such odds
This Selihot we will start our discussion by reviewing
the film, West Bank Story, seen in
Scranton at the First Annual Jewish Film Festival.
Is this a realistic concept or just a funny
movie Please join us Saturday evening, September
20, at 8:00 pm for this discussion, followed
by refreshments and our selihot service.
Our program is open to the public – bring a friend.
Respect for God and the Community
While Judaism respects the role that cell
phones play in our lives, we must respectfully
request that phones be turned off or, in the case
of emergencies, set to vibrate before coming
into services. If they are set to vibrate, we also
have two requests:
1. Answer the phone outside the chapel or sanctuary,
not while you are sitting or walking out.
2. Make sure your voice mail alert is soundless.
During weekday services, there is nothing
halakhically wrong with using cell phones. So
why are we asking for this behavior during all
services Kavod haTorah and kavod haTzibbur
- respect for God and for the community.
Wear White on Yom Kippur
It has become the custom to wear white clothes
in Israel and is fast becoming the custom in the
Diaspora, either to resemble the angels or because
white is the color of purity. Some say, since
it is the color of shrouds it will inspire repentance.
Many wear a white robe called a kittel.
A room full of white is a beautiful sight. Everyone
is equal – while one has to look closely to see
the differences, it becomes evident, that also in
the sight of God, we are equal and those
distinctions that one sees up close represent
the uniqueness of individuals. While asking God
for forgiveness, it is the time for humility and
introspection, not a time to bring attention to
one’s outer facade (clothing). This year, please
wear white on Yom Kippur.
Love Your Neighbor by Feeding
the Hungry
On Kol Nidre we will hold our annual
campaign for local people in need of
food. Between Rosh Hashanah and Kol
Nidre, bring canned goods and tzedakah
funds to the front lobby. There will be
boxes for the canned goods and a place
to put your tzedakah. Your support of this
worthy project will be greatly appreciated.
Tashlikh at the Lackawanna
The custom of tashlikh is derived from
the verse in Micah 7:19: He will take us
back in love; He will cover up our iniquities;
you will hurl all our sins into the
depths of the sea. The usual manner of
performing tashlikh is the throwing of
breadcrumbs into flowing water expressing
in a symbolic manner the casting away
of our sins. This year, why not make it
something more The area is beautiful for
a picnic – take your family early and relax.
As you think of your “sins,” why not
bring something appropriate to give away.
Do you eat too many sweets Bring candy
to give to the hungry. Do you talk on the
phone too much Bring old cell phones
to be given to women so they can call 911
in an emergency. Do you think about your
appearance too much Bring toiletries
from hotels you visit on your travels.
This year our tashlikh ceremony will be
held 6:00 p.m.on Tuesday, September 30
– the first day of Rosh Hashanah by the
Lackawanna River in the Iron Furnaces
Park. Bring some bread crumbs to throw
in the water. We hope that everyone will
come to participate. Our Sisterhood will
provide special treats for the young. Let
us personally continue the tashlikh
tradition at the Lackawanna River. Then
come back to the synagogue. for minha/
Adults-Our Youth Need You!!
Did you have fun in USY Think about all you
have gained from your experiences as an involved
USY member and leader. Do you want
our youth to have the same experience We need
your help to make it happen for the next generation.
We need adults to help our youth lead our
chapters! Contact “Rabbi Joe” to see how you
can help.
Parents:
USY (grades 8-12) offers something for everyone!
Whether someone is interested in social
action, Israel programs, or designing websites,
USY has something to offer each of its unique
members. USY has a wide variety of programming
– chapter, regional and international, which
suits the needs of a diverse group of youth. USY
can be a great outlet for them to take on a leadership
role, make friends, and learn about their Jewish
heritage.
And let’s not forget Kadima –( grades 6 &7):
KADIMA is about fun and friends, sharing and
laughter. KADIMA is about reaching out to others.
KADIMA is about getting involved with Judaism
and experiencing Jewish values. KADIMA
is about learning, social-action projects, and celebrating
Jewish holidays. KADIMA is about
dances, terrific trips and awesome overnights,
great regional events. KADIMA is about Leadership.
Our youth need Kadima and USY – our Kadima
and USY need YOU!
SCHOOL NEWS
“Hasty Notes” from the Education Chair Carol W. Rubel
This year will bring many changes to the way that Temple’s Religious School
functions. We are still working without an official director, but we have structured
an Administrative Committee to share both the duties and responsibilities that
are part of running the school. Penny Myers will continue as the Coordinator,
and Rabbi Mendelsohn and I will attempt to support her work in every way
possible.
Toward that end, here is my “Wish List” for the 5769 Academic Year:
• Internet capable laptop computers for classroom use… old ones, new
ones … any one will be welcome!
• Increased participation from parents… and other congregation members!
One of our new programs will involve the “donation” of two hours of
your time … one time only this year. Stay tuned for details!
• Increased communication: if you have a question or problem, please
call one of the Administrative Committee and work with us to find a
solution. Don’t talk with your friend over coffee – talk with us and get
something accomplished!
• Support the new curriculum changes – i.e. increased parental
involvement with weekly lessons … more information will be coming
shortly.
• Know that we are all part of the same team! The Education Board, the
Administrative Committee, teachers and parents are all on “Team - Insert
–Your- Child’s- Name -Here!” Every decision we make and every change
we try to implement has been done because we honestly think the
school will run more smoothly and the children’s experiences will be
richer because of the changes.
• Trust that your participation in the SWOT has already changed the way
we are doing things… and will continue to do so as the year progresses.
Stop and visit, observe your child’s class, volunteer to get involved when we ask
for your help and know that like you, we also are committed to making this year
the best it can be for the most important people … your children!
See you at school!
USY/Kadimah Organizes for 5769
Dear Congregants,
I hope your new year is off to a great start. I know mine is! I recently got back from
USY’s Encampment held at Camp Ramah in the Poconos. Every time family
members or friends ask me “how was your trip, what did you do” I can just say,
“It was amazing,” Whether it rains the whole time or it is sunny and beautiful, the
experience is always amazing. What makes me love this convention the most is
the Kabbalat Shabbat service. It is held in Ramah’s outdoor synagogue right
before sunset by the lake; it is the most gorgeous scene you could ever imagine
in your life. All your friends are surrounding you and you get to experience this
amazing view that can for sure make you feel more connected to God and your
friends at the same time.
I am really looking forward to this year with all sorts of new USY conventions and
chapter events coming up. If you are of USY age (grades 8-12) or Kadima age
(grades 5-7) please feel free to give me any ideas for events around here that you
think would be fun. We are already trying to have: a cookout, bowling, snow
tubing, a sleepover at the synagogue, and anything else you can tell me about.
Regional events for this year are:
LTI - a convention for chapter board only - Sept 21 st at our own synagogue! All
USY age members and parents are welcome to join us for lunch, and anyone
interested in being on Scranton’s chapter board please contact me and you can
come for the whole day.
Fall Convention-Bethlahem, PA Date To Be Announced
International Convention-All 1500 USY’ers come together in Washington, DC
from Dec. 21 st -28th.
Winter Convention- Bluebell, PA date TBA
Spring Convention-Lancaster, PA date TBA
Along with conventions (whole weekends) there are also shul-ins which are
sleepovers at various synagogues after Shabbat and Shabbatonim which are
sleepovers just for Shabbat.
USY is the most amazing thing that has ever happened to me. Please come to
events even if you don’t think you are that interested, I promise you will love it
in the end. Feel free to email me anytime at Mrlkandee@aol.com if you have any
questions about USY or Kadima. Have a great 5769!
The Albert Brauner Special Needs
Fund Provides Rides to Temple
Have you stopped driving Don’t let that stop
you from coming to shul! Would you like a ride
to the synagogue without bothering anyone
Now you can – for free! Thanks to Yvette
Brauner and her family, Al’s name will perpetuated
in a special way – the Albert Brauner Special
Needs Fund. This fund has been established
to help seniors in our congregation afflicted
with Alzheimer’s, dementia, or other problems
that affect their ability to live independently
of assisted living or nursing homes.
The first use for this fund is establishing a taxi
fund. Temple Israel now has an account with
McCarthy Flowered Cabs. If you would like to
come to Shabbat services, adult education or
any other Temple function and need transportation,
simply call the company at 344-5000 and
tell them you want to be taken to Temple Israel.
It’s as simple as that. The driver will pick you
up and the Temple will pay using the Brauner
Fund.
TEMPLE ISRAEL IS PLEASED TO ANNOUNCE
Jerry Klein
As
HATAN TORAH
Barry Propper
As
HATAN BEREISHIT
They will be called to the Torah for these honors at the Simchat Torah morning service Wed. Oct. 22.
On Wednesday morning, Otober 22nd, at the Simchat Torah service, we will honor two members of our congregation for living out the
ideals of Torah and for their devoted service to the Temple. Jerry Klein has been designated as Hatan Torah and Barry Propper as
Hatan Bereishit. We hope you will make every effort that morning to be present and honor these two distinguished members of our
Temple. Jerry’s and Barry’s names will be placed on the permanent Hatan Torah/Hatan Bereishit plaque donated by Rabbi Emeritus
David Geffen and his wife Rita in memory of Frieda and David Feld, Rita’s parents, and Anna and Louis Geffen, Rabbi’s parents.
JERRY KLEIN, the son of the late Sara and Ed Klein is a financial advisor with Mid South Capital, a full service brokerage firm in
Dunmore. He is a graduate of Scranton Central High School and a cum laude graduate of the University of Scranton.
His undergraduate studies were interrupted by WWII, where he spent two years in the Pacific theater as a medical corpsman in the
navy. After the war he returned to Scranton and completed his studies at the U of S receiving a bachelors degree in biology. He and his
father operated K & K Auto Parts Co. for many years.
He served as scout master of Troop 26 affiliated with the YMHA and JCC. He also was a member of Gimogash, an adult scouting
organization dedicated to improving and maintaining the scout camp at Goose Pond. He served as a vice president of Glen Oak County
Club and on the executive board of Vision House an organization whose mission was to help former prison inmates make the transition
back into society.
He has served on the executive board of the JCC and in 1997 was named man of the year. He served on the board of the Jewish
Federation and was chairman of the United Jewish Appeal in 2001.
He serves on the board of directors of the Jewish Home of Eastern PA., Elan Gardens. He served as president of the Jewish Family
Service of Lackawanna County, and currently serves on the executive committee and the Boys and Girls Club of Northeastern PA,
where he is currently co-chair of the ONE Campaign. He served on the allocation committee of United Way. He is member of B’nai
B’rith, the Jewish War Veterans, Hadassah Associates and was an active participant in Hadassah’s cancer information program for
high school students. He serves on the finance committee of the Temple. He and his wife Bev live in Scranton, have married children,
are grandparents and great-grandparents.
BARRY PROPPER, son of Jane and David Propper, was born 1953 in Augusta, GA, while his father served in the Signal Corp during
the Korean War. The family moved back to Scranton in 1954; Barry calls Scranton his home town. He is the oldest of three children and
has been an incentive to his brother Jeffrey and sister Mindy.
Barry started Temple Israel Hebrew school at age eight, and has continued his dedication to Judaism ever since. After high school
graduation he furthered his education, attaining an Associate Degree at Lackawanna Business College.
For the past twenty-six years Barry has devoted a lot of his time to the Red Cross, traveling with his friend Larry to all kinds of sites
– “from Susquehanna County to Gouldsboro.” He’s the blood donor site “bag man,” setting up the stickers, tubes and all the
paraphernalia to make the bags work. Barry also knows where to go, where to turn, how many beds each site has and what needs to
be done where.
For us, however, Barry’s greatest virtue is his devotion to our daily minyanim. He is there early, watching to make sure we all are
present. During the services, Barry collects tzedakah, hands out honors, reminds us what to include or exclude when there is a special
day and makes sure we remember who has Yahrzeit. He leads the ending of daily shaharit services and is always ready to be galilah
or a Torah holder. When Barry goes to Florida to visit his parents, it takes three people to replace him! It’s true that no one is
indispensable, but when it comes to Barry Propper, he comes pretty close.
Yet assisted by helpful Indians, they reaped a
bountiful harvest the following summer. The
grateful Pilgrims then declared a three-day feast
to thank God and to celebrate with their Indian
friends. While this was not the first Thanksgiving
in America (thanksgiving services were held in
Virginia as early as 1607), it was America’s first
Thanksgiving Festival.
Pilgrim Edward Winslow described the Pilgrims’
Thanksgiving in these words:“...Many of the
Indians [came] amongst us and... their greatest
King, Massasoit, with some ninety men, whom
for three days we entertained and feasted; and
they went out and killed five deer, which they
brought... And although it be not always so
plentiful as it was at this time with us, yet by the
goodness of God we are... far from want.”
This Thanksgiving, please join the Central City
Ministerium as we thank God for letting us be
“far from want.” Monday, November 24, Temple
Israel will host an interfaith service in our main
sanctuary at 7:30 p.m. Please join us.
LifeLights – a Lasting Gift from Mae Gelb
Thanks to an anonymous donation in Mae’s memory, we have “bubby’s wisdom”
to share with you. As you walk in our East Gibson street door and climb
the stairs, you will find racks on the wall holding LifeLights booklets. LifeLights
are inspirational, informational booklets about challenges to our emotional and
spiritual lives and how to deal with them – booklets about health and healing,
grief and loss, spiritual care, personal growth, family issues and living a Jewish
life. Each LifeLight is written by a caring soul who knows the inner territory of
grief, doubt, confusion and longing. Each addresses the reader from a uniquely
Jewish spiritual perspective.
You are welcome to stop, browse and take booklets to read on your own. We will
refill the racks as needed, so don’t hesitate to take advantage of this gift.
Remember: no one is alone in his or her need and we are ready to offer Jewish
resource support. If I can add anything to what these booklets offer, please
don’t hesitate to call “Rabbi Joe” Mendelsohn
Why pay extra to learn You don’t need fancy
titles or slick advertising – you need to know
how to live as 21st century Conservative Jews.
Development of Halakhah - Rabbi Mendelsohn
guidance. How did halakhah develop How have
the different branches of Judaism treated
halakhah in its current form How can we relate
to it today
Cemetery Committee Offers to Recite Prayers
for Those Unable to Visit Cemetery
It is a custom at the season of the High Holidays for family members or friends to
visit the graves of loved ones to recite El Maley Rahamim the traditional memorial
prayer showing respect and remembrance of a loved one. Sometimes it is not
possible for one to make a visit to the cemetery.
If you have family members buried in the Temple Israel cemetery, the cemetery
committee would consider it a mitzvah for us to say the traditional prayer for
those who are unable to get the cemetery. If you are interested in having us do
this , please inform us via e-mail or regular mail, of the name of the loved one(s)
you would like to remember. Rabbi Mendelsohn will join us at the cemetery
September 28th to recite the prayer.
E-mail the information to: Lewisare@aol.com or tiscran@epix.net or mail to:
Temple Israel Cemetery Committee, 918 E. Gibson St, Scranton, PA 18510
We are unable to accept information by phone calls. Please send
this information to Temple before September 19, 2008.
Temple Israel Messenger
From the president -continued from page 2
will have a new approach to our children’s education
in the Religious School thanks to ideas
of professional educators and parents who participated
in a SWOT exercise and study. In addition
there are a number of ideas on new ways to
educate that were brought back from convention
by the Rabbi.
I hope to also introduce thoughts and concepts
that have been shared at the United Synagogue
convention and the e-mail bulletin boards provided
to congregational leadership by our national
organization and its regional office. I have
also met with my counterpart at Temple Hesed,
and we have found several areas in which our
congregations may be able to work together
while still maintaining each of our own values
and approaches to Judaism.
Tradition. It is traditional at this time of year to
thank all of those who have worked on behalf of
the Temple and who have assisted me in my
duties. Our professionals, our staff, our board
and committees all have contributed to the effort
to provide a full service house of worship for
the community. Many of our laity have also
stepped forward or continued their dedicated
service and given much without accolades. To
all, on behalf of the entire congregation and
myself I humbly say thank you, and if I have forgotten
anything or anyone, I ask forgiveness in
this season of forgiveness.
May you and yours be inscribed and sealed in
the Book of Life for 5769.
