T HE M ESSENGER
Temple Israel
Join us for a Special Kiddush
As we honor
“Rabbi Joe” Mendelsohn
11:30a.m. June 2nd in
Levy Hall
Rabbi Mendelsohn has been our Rabbi for the last
8 years, serving as Temple Israel’s spiritural leader,
caring for us and contributing to the Scranton
community as well.
Please join us as open our doors so all can honor
“Rabbi Joe.”
Services start at 9:00 a.m. in the chapel.
R.S.V.P. Temple Israel office.
Open to the Public.

June/July 2012
Thank You
These two words cannot convey the full range of emotions I have experienced these past months. While, on one
hand, Linda and I have been faced with a radical change in our path, the honor, love and support I have received
from the Scranton community and from many of our members has been overwhelming. Just this past month I
was formally honored by the Lackawanna Bar Association and the Jewish Home of Eastern Pennsylvania.
And then THE VISIT! “Rabbi, we [Temple Israel] want to honor you…” resulting in the Kiddush luncheon June
second. Alma Shaffer and her committee insisted on making this as special as possible while I struggled with
accepting this honor. You see, I have taught that caring for others should be done without expectation of reward
– all the more so for me. Hired as Rabbi for Temple Israel has carried a number of responsibilities; while I have
tried to meet them all, sometimes I have fallen short of my goals. But I have worked for you 24/7 for these past
eight years, responding to each challenge as it has arisen. I have experienced a number of successes and a few
failures as we have moved along our Temple path, changing in so many ways and yet remaining the consistent
Conservative Jewish force of Scranton.
Caring for the people of Temple Israel, however, has been a labor of love. I have appreciated each time that I
shared in your simhot and have been thankful that I could help in your times of challenge. I am reminded of a
story:
Rabbi Hayyim ben Leibush Halberstam of Zanz (19th century Poland) said, “In my youth when I burned with
the love of God, I thought I would convert the whole world to God. But soon I realized that it would be quite
enough to convert the people who lived in my town, and I tried for a long time, but did not succeed. Then I
realized that my agenda was still too ambitious, and I focused on the people in my household. But I could not
convert them either. Finally I realized: I must work on myself, so I may give true service to God. But I did not
even accomplish this.” There are numerous versions of this story, but the message is the same: the one each of
us must work on is ourselves.
Now you know why I truly say “thank you,” for this defines success. If we have the good fortune of making a
positive difference in someone else’s life, we have managed to change ourselves, and as our paths change, we
find new opportunities for self-growth and change. You have made me successful.
THANK YOU
Let Us Know When Someone’s in the Hospital
The Temple Israel Annual Meeting
New national health information privacy standards
have been issued by the U.S. Department of Health
and Human Services (DHHS), pursuant to the Health
Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996
(HIPAA). While each hospital interprets these rules
differently, one thing is becoming clear:
Unless you tell us, we might not know!
When you are admitted to Regional Hospital of
Scranton (RHOS) you will be asked to consent or not
consent to the facility notifying any Clergy of your
presence in the facility. If you consent, you will be
asked for the name of your Clergy and the contact
information of the house of worship you want RHOS
to notify for you. In accordance with your consent, a
call will be placed to the Clergy you have identified.
If anyone calls the hospital and asks for you by name
or room number; that information will be given unless
you choose to “opt out”.
What does it mean to “opt out”? Some individuals
do not want anyone to know they are in a hospital or
healthcare facility, so upon admission everyone has the
right to “opt out”. Therefore, if you choose the “opt
out” option and a family member, friend or clergy calls
requesting your room number, no information on your
admission will be provided.
Dessert and Coffee will be served
Regional Hospital has just shared with us that it will
stop giving out lists of patients by faith. Therefore,
when we call asking for Jewish patients, the hospital
will not release your information to us.
The Solution?
Please call the office when someone you know is in
the hospital.
We’d rather be called numerous times about you
than learn after the fact that we did not visit you
because we didn’t know.
Temple Israel Messenger
I am happy to say that over the past several weeks we have had some wonderful events at Temple Israel. The last Messenger related
about a Teen Service in February. On the May 5th Shabbat we had a repeat engagement and, once again, it was a treat for those of us
who attended. I want to thank Sam Rosen, Cantor Aronzon, Rabbi Mendelsohn, Sam Myers and Henry Litvak for the beginning of the
service. Our Torah readers were Ben Vale, Cantor, Sam Myers, Jared Cohen, Henry Litvak. Rachel Smertz read a beautiful Haftorah.
Lindsay Cohen did the conclusion of the Torah Service and Musaf. Everyone performed beautifully and Mitchell and Connie Cohen
and family treated the congregation to a beautiful kiddush. On the same Shabbat the congregation helped Morris Goldstein celebrate
his 100th birthday. On the previous Shabbat, April 28th, we had a wonderful 90th birthday celebration of Sarah Morris and a gala kiddush
given by the Morris family.
At the May 12th service, the congregation was treated to our annual Sisterhood Shabbat honoring Marian Goldstein-Beckhorn as the
Woman of Distinction. It was inspirational to see all the women who took part in the service and everyone who came to honor Marian,
who has been so devoted to the Temple and its Sisterhood for 20 years. Again, we were all treated to a lovely kiddush sponsored
by the Beckhorn family. On May 18th, we held the Religious School Family Minha/Kabbalat Shabbat services and dinner which was
also open to the entire membership. If nothing else, if you attend our services you will be well fed and I encourage all of you to attend
services on a more frequent basis. Believe it or not, you are missed when you don’t come more often.
I want to take the opportunity to first thank Carol Rubel for her six years of service as the Chairperson of our Board of Education.
Carol’s talents and insights were of absolute value to the committee and she will be missed at that position, although, thankfully, Carol
will continue as a member of the Board. Rabbi Steve Nathan did an outstanding job as our Master Teacher of the Hebrew School and
deserves a big thank you. Also, Penny Myers did so much volunteer work on behalf of the school and Sam Myers helped Rabbi Nathan
every week and they should to be recognized for their important work. Finally, I must thank Elise Rubinow, of Elan Gardens, for
all she has done to help the Temple run the Hebrew School at Elan Gardens.
There are two more dates I want to emphasize in this Messenger. On JUNE 2, 2012, Temple Israel will have a large kiddush honoring
Rabbi Mendelsohn for his devoted work over the past eight years. I certainly hope all of you, if it is physically possible, will attend to
recognize the Rabbi’s devotion to the congregation. Please call Julie in the office to indicate your presence so we can plan accordingly.
On June 20, 2012, we will have our annual meeting and our new slate of officers and board members will be installed. Please come out
at 7:30 in the evening and enjoy some refreshments along with submitting your ballot.
As you can see, there is a great deal of activity going on at temple and we wish more of you would take advantage.
You will note in other parts of this edition about our Shavuot Services over the Labor Day weekend and I look forward to seeing many
of you there. The holiday falls at a pleasant time of the year which should not prevent you from coming out.
I wish all of our members have a wonderful summer and don’t forget Temple Israel is open every day of the year even during the
summer months.
June/July 2012
There is no question but that Conservative Judaism’s congregations face serious challenges - particularly those in the Northeast who
remain in their traditional locations even though many of their members have moved to the suburbs. So in that regard Temple Israel is
not unique.
A recent study of Synagogues across the country found that US Jewish congregational life is showing signs of stagnation with few
young adults, many older members and an overabundance of sanctuary space for its needs. Conservative Congregations struggle
because of fewer innovations in service styles and ambivalence about the need to change as well as strained financial resources. All
Congregations (other than Orthodox) suffer from lackluster attendance and pallid attempts at recruitment of new members.
Young people between ages 18 and 34 constitute a scant 8% of our Congregations and, by contrast, they have more than three times that
amount in members 65 or older. And our Temple has fewer of the younger and more of the older.
With educated young adults marrying later and having fewer children they have competing opportunities for social interaction and spiritual
searching. And to make matters worse religious commitment among newer generations is tapering. The civic and communal sense
of obligation to “belong” has dropped along with ethnicity and anti-semitism - while intermarriage and other options such as Chabad
have increased. This is true in America for all religions.
With the exception of Bar and Bat Mitzvah ceremonies and special events such as our beautiful Sisterhood Shabbat, attendance at synagogue
services is thin. The study shows that across the country Saturday morning attendance with no Bar or Bat Mitzvah is 24 worshipers
for every 100 members - and for Reform on Friday nights it is 17 out of 100. And the prime reason why Conservative numbers are a
bit higher is because of proximity to Conservative synagogues - particularly by the older members who still live near the Synagogue.
So people who do join do so for practical reasons such as B’nai Mitzvah training rather than for spiritual enrichment.
And for the most part Conservative Synagogues have done a poor job welcoming newcomers such as following up on visitors with
phone calls, mail and email including sending out printed material about the Temple. We know that Chabad is much better at this as you
can walk in and immediately get an invitation to Shabbat lunch or dinner. We believe the answer is not necessarily the programs we
offer as we feel that people want relationships. People in the internet world and with two-career families are, frankly, too busy for more
and more activities.
We have to build relationships with our members and each other to make everyone feel more a part of the Temple Israel “community” -
something the Leadership will be emphasizing as we move forward. We have new ideas on how best to do this - and we welcome all of
your ideas as we need to reach out more aggressively to unaffiliated Jews in the community.
Tisha b’Av – the 9th of Av
Tisha B’Av is not a holiday, rather it is a day mourning many losses. According to Jeremiah 3:12, the First Temple, built by King
Solomon, was destroyed by the Babylonian king Nebuchadnezzar in 586 B.C.E. on the 10th of Av. The Second Temple was destroyed
by the Romans in 70 C.E., on the 10th of Av, according to the historian Josephus. The Talmud, however, gives the date of
both destructions as the 9th of Av (Tisha B’Av), which became the accepted date.
The Talmud justifies the 9th of Av as the major day of mourning because a series of calamities occurred on this day throughout
Jewish history. The Mishnah (Ta’an. 4:6) enumerates five disasters: “On the 9th of Av…”
1. it was decreed that the Children of Israel, after the Exodus from Egypt, should not enter the Promised Land;
2. the First and
3. the Second Temples were destroyed;
4. Bethar, the last stronghold of the leaders of the Bar Kokhba Rebellion, was captured in 135 C.E.; and
5. one year later, in 136, the Roman emperor Hadrian established a heathen temple on the site of the Temple and rebuilt Jerusalem
as a pagan city which was renamed Aelia Capitolina and which the Jews were forbidden to enter.
The expulsion of the Jews from Spain in 1492 is said also to have occurred on the 9th of Av and many feel the date of our first use
of atomic bombs on Japan is close enough to the 9th of Av to be included.
Tisha B’Av falls on Shabbat; since this is a fast day, observance is done on the 10th of Av – the night of Saturday, July 28 and the
day of Sunday, July 29. Services will be at 8:00 p.m. Monday night instead of 5:45 p.m., 7:00 a.m. Tuesday morning, 1:00 p.m.
for our Minha Torah service and 8:30 p.m. to close the day.
PRACTICES: Because this is a time of mourning,
Except for Shabbat, meat meals are not eaten for the first 8 days of Av (the 9th we fast) because meat is reserved for enjoyment.
Leather, jewelry and cosmetics are customarily not worn.
Those beyond the age of Bar/Bat Mitzvah are encouraged to fast at least through Minhah which should not be recited before
1:00 p.m.
Leather shoes are removed on the night of Tisha B’av after “barkhu.”
As many people as are able should sit on the ground for the reading of Eiha.
May these tragedies never be repeated.
June/July 2012
We are a warm and friendly Congregation
and can and will be supportive of each
other in all kinds of ways. We can each do
more to ask others to be involved with
them in Synagogue life - an example is the
good response we get when we ask others
to help make a Minyan when there is a
Yahrzeit.
So please share with us your ideas as to
how to build the relationships that will be
the key to our future success.
CEMETERY COMMITTEE REPORT
Those who have recently visited the Temple Israel Cemetery have
remarked that it is in excellent condition. It is the desire of the
cemetery committee to keep it maintained in this condition.
In order to insure that our cemetery continues to keep looking good,
we are asking for concerned members to join our committee in
helping to see that this continues.
It takes little time but a lot of concern and dedication, the problems are
few, but the oversight is important. Please call the Temple office and
offer to help.
Thank you.
