What to Do During The Holy Day / Holiday Period
Judaism celebrates the new year with a series of holidays lasting through most of the
month of Tishrei. The etymology of holiday stems from “holy day”, a much more
accurate description of our Days of Awe – Rosh HaShanah and Yom Kippur. Take
time to reassess your personal thoughts and actions. Reexamine your relationship
with your family, friends and the community. Pay debts and apologize to those you
have hurt – help prepare our lives for a good year before asking God for a good
inscription in the book of life. If everyone does this, the community becomes repaired.
Come for the first Yizkor service of the year on Yom Kippur.
Immediately following Yom Kippur we are reminded what God did for our people by
celebrating Sukkot: “You shall live in booths seven days; all citizens in Israel shall
live in booths in order that future generations may know that I made the Israelite
people live in booths when I brought them out of Egypt; I am the Lord your God.”
[Lev. 23:42,43] This holiday is to be celebrated!! The rituals involved in the sukkah
and the synagogue are centered around celebrating our freedom from slavery. Come
shake a lulav and have a meal in the sukkah. During Sukkot we continue asking God
for a good year and express our contrition by chanting hoshanot.
Shemini Atzeret is explained in a midrash. Rabbi Isaac Klein explains in his book, A
Guide to Religious Jewish Practice, “When the children of Israel, after having spent
a long holiday period in worship and rejoicing, are about to resume their regular daily
life, God says to them, ‘It is difficult for me to part with you. Tarry a while longer. Stay
another day.’ Hence the name Shemini Atzeret, for the word atzeret means ‘to tarry or
to hold back’ (quoted by Rashi on Lev. 23:36).” Come for services and the second
Yizkor service of the year.
Simhat Torah is the logical conclusion to this set of holidays. We are still celebrating
our redemption from Israel when post-geonic rabbis add a holiday to celebrate the
concluding portion of the Torah. This causes us to combine all the reasons to rejoice
into one final giant celebration: honoring Torah, honoring members of the congregation,
inviting all the children up for an aliyah, celebrating in the synagogue and in the
home. Please join us as we honor Dr. Alan Firestone as our Hatan Torah and Atty.
Edward Monsky as our Hatan Breishit.
This series of holy days is a statement to God: “You freed us from slavery and chose
us to be Your people. Your part of our brit, our mutual holy contract, is to be there for
us, therefore please write us for a good year in the book of life.” Our part of the
brit is to participate.
May We All Be Inscribed and Sealed
for a Good Year in the Book of Life.

September/October 2009
In the early years of the 21st century, it has become
clear to Hazzanim (cantors) and others
involved in synagogue life that a new approach
is needed if we are to keep services vibrant and
meaningful for most Jews. In Conservative and
Reform synagogues as well, the number of worshippers
proficient in davening has diminished.
The act of davening enables one to be actively
involved in the service. Increased congregational
singing has helped to fill this void.
In our day, a growing number of younger generation
families would rather spend their recreational
time playing interactive sports or video
games at the end of the work week than dedicating
themselves to synagogue communal
worship, and being actively engaged in the
Temple’s life.
In truth, a synagogue service must have a proper
balance. To be sure, there must be an opportunity
for participation. But, there also has to be
points in the service when worshippers listen to
the Hazzan, Rabbi and choir. Listening, too, is
a form of prayer. It allows for inspiration to occur.
Learning comes from reading, studying and
listening to others.
Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur are the days
on which synagogues are filled to capacity. As
Hazzanim our challenge is to touch worshippers.
That task is made even more difficult because
most who are in the synagogue on these
days do not attend services regularly. What is
our calling and responsibility as cantors I have
always maintained that, in leading a service of
liturgical prayer, we must create an aura of spirituality
and closeness to God through cantorial
chant. We must also engage our congregation
to participate in prayer which ultimately brings
feelings of unity, warmth and connection, bringing
the worshippers back to their roots. Prayer
and song is what draws one to spiritual heights.
What could be more beautiful than seeing and
hearing a synagogue filled with fellow Jews,
families, friends and neighbors, joined together
in harmony
China – A Lesson in Community
China was a wonderful trip! Tienaman Square, walking the Great Wall, Yu Gardens,
the Temple of Heaven, the zoo at Chong Qing, the Terra Cotta warriors, cruising
up the Yangtze river… each site special, unique and precious. One element was
common throughout our trip – a sea of humanity: rows and rows of 60 to 70-story
high rises for Chinese people to live in, lots of cars, and millions of bicycles,
electric bikes and scooters.
One of the things special to me was observing how millions of people can live
together – 18 million in Shanghai, 17 million in Beijing – over 5 million in tiny
Chong Qing! Living space for most families consists of a living room, bathroom
and one or two bedrooms, all small by our standards. Their solution Community!
People meet, play sports, discuss politics, play music, dance, exercise and relax
in parks, at the zoo, in the green areas beside national sites – anywhere and
everywhere. In Chong Qing, for the cost of one day’s admittance local residents
get monthly passes to the zoo. In Xi’an there is exercise equipment to use in the
parks by the city wall. Instead of packing the car, deciding what to take, what to
eat and what to do in order to go to Nay Aug Park in Scranton or South Abington
Park in Clarks Summit, residents walk to their local park, the same way we might
walk across the street.
While I would not want to live in such crowded conditions, I appreciate the value
of community - the quintessence of Jewish values. Our J.C.C., as it celebrates its
100 th anniversary, is centered around community, however community is not
limited to the J.C.C. Community is Temple Israel’s daily minyan; community is
our Reba and Art Douglass Religious School and community is family education;
community is Friday night dinners; community is Shabbat and holiday services.
Community is coming together to comfort and to celebrate.
As we enter the year 5770, let us remember the words of Moshe as he said to
Pharaoh, “lkb ubhbezcu ubhrgbc - We will all go, young and old.” We will all go into
the next decade; I am here to help you as we journey together.
As always, as we prepare for the year 5770, Linda and I wish to thank all of you
for making each year special. I intentionally do not name names in order to avoid
leaving anyone out. In the same vein, we apologize to each and every one of you
in the words of our tradition: “If we have hurt anyone willingly or unknowingly,
or through our actions or inaction caused someone to be hurt this past year, we
apologize and ask for forgiveness. We ask that you accept this statement as
being given of our own free will and as being genuine, coming from ourselves,
and not from any situation forcing us to publicly state this. Linda also joins me in
wishing each and every one of you, “L’shana Tovah u’m’tukah u’briah” — a
good, sweet and healthy year in the book of life.
Temple Israel Messenger
We are pleased to welcome Rhonda Levine to our professional staff. Rhonda is
our new religious school director. Joining Rhonda in overseeing our school is
Carol Rubel. Carol has volunteered to serve as chair of the education committee.
Both Rhonda and Carol are accomplished educators and administrators who
have previously served our religious school with distinction. We are truly fortunate
to have two such gifted individuals working with our school children.
When Rhonda interviewed for school director, she mentioned how wonderful it
would be if the school children would be able to have more “updated” classrooms.
With this thought in mind, our house chair Robby Pollack, prepared a wish list. It
included: new windows, lighting, painting and carpeting. All we needed were
some angels to make it happen. And lo and behold they appeared.
First, the family of Sam and Sophie Maiman stepped forward. Children Barbara
and Earle, daughter-in-law Sharon and grandchildren Eli and Jessie have made a
most generous endowment for the religious school refurbishing project. Their
donation is in memory of Sam and Sophie, two individuals who served our beloved
Temple and the entire Scranton Jewish community so magnificently. We are
sincerely thankful that the Maiman family has honored their parents and
grandparents in such a loving way.
Secondly, when the Louis Wolf Foundation heard of the scope of the project,
they perceived this as a meaningful tribute to Mr. Wolf. Louis Wolf epitomized
Jewish education at Temple Israel. A donation from the foundation will be given
in memory of Mr. Wolf. We thank Jerry Klein who has served as the president of
the foundation for many years, for his assistance in spearheading this grant.
Finally, I would like to thank one of Temple’s most devoted volunteer workers for
his invaluable help in this project. Robby Pollack serves as our house chair.
Besides establishing the parameters of the classroom project, Robby solicited
bids, interviewed contractors and established work schedules. Robby works
tirelessly on behalf of Temple. This classroom refurbishing comes just after Robby
helped to oversee major roofing and heating repairs. We thank Robby for all that
he continues to do to help Temple. Very soon we might use Robby’s expertise
again. There are plans on the table to modernize the temple’s offices.
Hopefully, another group of “angels” will embrace the office project as the Maiman
family and the Louis Wolf Foundation did with the religious school.
Please mark your calendars for Saturday, September 12th. At our service, we will
dedicate the religious school classroom restoration in honor of Sam and Sophie
Maiman and the Louis Wolf Foundation. A Kiddush luncheon will follow the
services.
As we approach the high holidays, Iris, Andrew and I would like to wish all of
you a most happy and healthy New Year!
Selihot 5770: The Lion King
Hakuna matata is a Swahili phrase that literally
means, “There are no worries.” It is more
commonly used similarly to mean “no problem.”
Are there no worries as we enter 5770 asking God
for a good year
Rafiki (Swahili for “friend”) is the wise monkey
who guides Simba, introducing him to the “circle
of life.” How does this concept relate to the
Jewish New Year
Simba must realize his destiny and return to the
Pride Lands to claim his rightful place. Is this
teshuvah
Saturday, September 12, at 8:10 p.m. we will watch
The Lion King – a movie for all ages, followed by
refreshments, a discussion centered around these
questions and our special selihot service. Come
one, come all – bring a friend!
From the Cantor - continued from page 2
Our traditional motifs, (MiSinai tunes) for the
High Holidays represent our rich Jewish liturgical
heritage. These traditional motifs date back
to the Ashkenazic communities of Southwest
Germany between the 10 th and 16 th centuries.
The High Holidays are the peak of spirituality for
the Jewish people. It is a time when congregants
look to God, their rabbis, cantors and into their
souls, for connection, inspiration, direction, comfort
and hope. It is a time when one relies on
and yearns for prayer. It is a time when we all
remember the traditional sounds of our childhood.
It is time when we look forward to the
New Year, but also yearn for the familiarity of the
preceding years. It is a time when worshippers
return to the synagogue after long absence. It is
incumbent upon us, as leaders of congregations
to nourish the souls of our congregants.
My family and I wish to all of you a good healthy
and sweet year for 5770 and to be inscribed in
the Book of Life. Shanah Tovah
Love Your
Neighbor by Feeding the
Hungry
On Kol Nidre, Sunday evening,
September 27, we will hold our annual
campaign for local people in need of
food. Between Rosh Hashanah and Kol
Nidre, bring canned goods and tzedakah
funds to the front lobby. There will be
boxes for the canned goods and a place
to put your tzedakah. With the rising cost
of food, now more than ever, hungry
people need your support.
Tashlikh at the Lackawanna
The custom of tashlikh is derived from
the verse in Micah 7:19: He will take us
back in love; He will cover up our iniquities;
you will hurl all our sins into the
depths of the sea. The usual manner of
performing tashlikh is the throwing of
breadcrumbs into flowing water expressing
in a symbolic manner the casting
away of our sins. This year, why not make
it something more The area is beautiful
for a picnic – take your family early
and relax. As you think of your “sins,” why
not bring something appropriate to give
away. Do you eat too many sweets
Bring candy to give to the hungry. Do you
talk on the phone too much Bring old
cell phones to be given to women so they
can call 911 in an emergency.
This year our tashlikh ceremony will be
held 6:00 p.m. Sunday, September 20 –
the second day of Rosh Hashanah by
the Lackawanna River in the Iron Furnaces
Park. Bring some bread crumbs
to throw in the water and something special
to “throw away.” We hope that everyone
will come to participate. Our Sisterhood
will provide special treats for the
young. Let us personally continue the
tashlikh tradition at the Lackawanna
River. Then come back to the synagogue
for minha/ma’ariv. See you there!
Wear White on Yom Kippur
It has become the custom to wear white
clothes in Israel and is fast becoming
the custom in the Diaspora, either in order
to resemble the angels or because white
is the color of purity. Some say since it is
the color of shrouds it will inspire
repentance. Many choose to wear a white
robe called kittel.
A room full of white is a beautiful sight.
Everyone is equal – while one has to look
closely to see the differences, it becomes
evident that also in the sight of God we
are equal and those distinctions that one
sees up close represent the uniqueness
of individuals. While asking God for
forgiveness, it is the time for humility and
introspection, not a time to bring attention
to one’s outer façade (clothing). This
year, please wear white on Yom Kippur.
Kavod haMakom and
Kavod haTzibbur
Respect for God and for the
Community
While Judaism respects the role that cell
phones play in our lives, we must
respectfully request that phones be
turned off or, in the case of emergencies,
set to vibrate before coming into services.
If they are set to vibrate, we also have two
requests:
1.Answer the phone outside the chapel
or sanctuary, not while you are sitting or
walking out.
SCHOOL NEWS
Temple Israel welcomes our new school director Rhonda Levine:
Is it back-to-school time already Although we’ve had an especially wet and
rainy summer, sunny days are on the horizon at the Reba and Art Douglass
Religious School. As the new Education Director, I am thrilled to be returning to
the Hebrew school where I taught several years ago. I look forward to seeing
familiar faces, and I’m eager to meet those of you whom I’ve never had the
pleasure of knowing before. Most especially, I am excited to get to know all of our
students as we begin a new year of Jewish learning together.
I’m pleased to tell you that our school will be undergoing some wonderful facility
improvements, such as new windows, better lighting, fresh paint and carpeting,
all thanks to the kind generosity of the Maiman family and the Louis Wolf
Foundation. A modernized, attractive learning environment will surely have a
positive impact on our students’ successes here at the Reba and Art Douglass
Religious School.
With the High Holy Days fast approaching, we hope to see you and your children
at our family-friendly Junior Congregation services. We are fortunate Rosh
Hashanah falls on a weekend this year, giving our students the opportunity to be
involved in the holiday on both Saturday and Sunday. We’re striving to make the
services special and enjoyable for all ages, so I hope you’ll join us!
Hebrew school registration will be sent out soon; please be sure to respond, so
your child is “all set”. If you ever have any questions or suggestions, please feel
free to call me at the school office: 342-3521. I look forward to seeing you and
your family very soon!
Shalom! Rhonda Levine – Education Director
Adults – Our Youth Need You!!
Did you have fun in USY Think about all you
have gained from your experiences as an involved
USY member and leader. Do you want
our youth to have the same experience We
need your help to make it happen for the next
generation. We need adults to help our youth
lead our chapters! Contact “Rabbi Joe” to see
how you can help.
Parents:
USY (grades 8-12) offers something for everyone!
Whether someone is interested in Social
Action, Israel programs, or designing websites,
USY has something to offer each of its unique
members. USY has a wide variety of programming
– chapter, regional and international, which
suits the needs of a diverse group of youth. USY
can be a great outlet for them to take on a leadership
role, make friends, and learn about their
Jewish heritage.
And let’s not forget Kadima – grades (6&7):
KADIMA is about fun and friends, sharing and
laughter. KADIMA is about reaching out to others.
KADIMA is about getting involved with Judaism
and experiencing Jewish values. KADIMA
is about learning, social-action projects, and
celebrating Jewish holidays. KADIMA is about
dances, terrific trips and awesome overnights,
great regional events. KADIMA is about Leadership.
Our youth need Kadima and USY – our Kadima
Temple Israel Messenger
TEMPLE ISRAEL IS PLEASED TO ANNOUNCE
Dr. Alan Firestone
As
HATAN TORAH
Atty. Edward Monsky
As
HATAN BEREISHIT
They will be called to the Torah for these honors at the Simchat Torah morning service October 11.
On Sunday morning, Oct.11, at the Simchat Torah service, we will honor two members of our congregation for living out the ideals of
Torah and for their devoted service to the Temple. Alan Firestone has been designated as Hatan Torah and Edward Monsky as Hatan
Bereishit. We hope you will make every effort that morning to be present and honor these two distinguished members of our Temple.
Dr. Alan Firestone, a pediatric dentist in Scranton, was born and raised in Scranton’s Hill Neighborhood by devoted parents Ruth and
Solomon Firestone, members of Temple Israel as well as Ohev Zedek. His family later moved to Harrisburg where Alan graduated from
high school. He received his bachelor’s degree at Temple University, and his dental degree from the University of Pittsburgh School of
Dental Medicine. He did a two-year externship at Westmoreland Hospital and a pediatric dental internship and residency at Ohio State
University where he also completed a six-month program in general anesthesia.
In 1979 Alan returned to Scranton with wife Joy to practice pediatric dentistry and rejoined Temple Israel. Alan and Joy have two loving
children, Mindy and Evan. Mindy and her husband Brett blessed Alan and Joy with their first grandchild, Sara, who was recently
named at Temple Israel.
Alan holds memberships in many local, state and national dental organizations. He has held appointments at local hospitals and was
staff dentist at the Scranton State School for the Deaf for 26 years. He has been a board member of the Scranton District Dental Society
and chairman of the local National Children’s Dental Health Month. He is a board member of Lackawanna County Head Start and was
chairman of Week of the Young Child for our county. He visits area schools to educate young people in good dental health practices.
Dr. Firestone has been a board member of Temple Israel and has served on various committees. Also he has been a board member of the
JCC of Scranton. His personal interests have included a study of the history of local congregations and houses of worship and plans
to someday publish a book on the subject. He enjoys participating in religious services at Temple Israel as well as his friendships and
associations within the congregation. Dr. Firestone always welcomes any request for service to the congregation when called upon.
Attorney Edward Monsky is a graduate of Temple Israel Religious School though many of his contemporaries don’t remember his
actually being in the classroom, but rather in Mr. Wolf’s office. He has, however, redeemed himself and we are now pleased to announce
him as our 2009 Hatan Bereshit.
Ed has been a member of the High Holiday Choir at Temple for the past 24 years. He can be found weekday afternoons at minyan and
is always willing to daven mincha, or maariv. Under the expert tutelage of Cantor Aronzon, he has shared with us his melodic chanting
of Torah and Haftorah on Shabbat. He is a regular for the Purim Megillah reading and often helps welcome the new moon with his
Torah reading.
Ed currently serves on the Board of Temple Israel and has recently joined Lew Sare as co-chair of the cemetery committee. He is also
a member of the ritual committee. In addition, Ed is the immediate past president of the Jewish Community Center, and is a past president
of B’nai B’rith Amos Lodge # 136. He currently serves on the boards of Elan Gardens, The Jewish Federation of NE Pa. and Jewish
Family Service. He also represents the Jewish Federation on the board of the Scranton-Lackawanna Human Development Agency. He
is currently a board member of the Lackawanna Bar Association. Ed formerly served as a director of the Women’s Resource Center.
A graduate of Haverford College with a B.A. in sociology, Ed has a Master’s degree in sociology from the University of Pennsylvania
and earned a J.D. from Washington University in St. Louis.
Ed practices law in Scranton and Honesdale as a partner at Fine,Wyatt & Carey, P.C., specializing in civil litigation and wills and estates.
He and his wife Annie, are the proud parents of two sons, Jeremy, a senior at Lehigh University and Scott,a sophomore at Cornell
University.
A Lasting Gift from Mae Gelb
Thanks to an anonymous donation in Mae’s
memory, we have “bubby’s wisdom” to share
with you. As you walk in our East Gibson street
door and climb the stairs, you will find racks on
the wall holding LifeLights booklets. LifeLights
are inspirational, informational booklets about
challenges to our emotional and spiritual lives
and how to deal with them – booklets about
health and healing, grief and loss, spiritual care,
personal growth, family issues and living a Jewish
life. Each LifeLight is written by a caring soul
who knows the inner territory of grief, doubt, confusion
and longing. Each addresses the reader
from a uniquely Jewish spiritual perspective.
You are welcome to stop, browse and take booklets
to read on your own. We will refill the racks
as needed, so don’t hesitate to take advantage
of this gift. Remember: no one is alone in his or
her need and we are ready to offer Jewish resource
support. If I can add anything to what
these booklets offer, please don’t hesitate to call.
Can We Help You Come to Temple
We at Temple Israel have always tried to care
for our congregants, providing accessibility to
our chapel and sanctuary, listening devices in
the sanctuary and large-print mahzorim (High
Holy Day prayerbooks). In order for all our
members to feel comfortable coming to services,
Temple Israel has
· Large-print erev Shabbat prayerbooks
· Enlarged copies of the Saturday morning
prayerbooks
· Designated the driveway beside our chapel
as a drop-off and pick-up area only
· Free taxi service to Temple through the Albert
Brauner Special Needs Fund (see below.)
What else can we do for you Do you need a
ride Is there some other accommodation we
can provide Contact Rabbi Mendelsohn.
Do You Need Transportation for the
High Holy Days Call a taxi on us!
Thanks to Yvette Brauner and her family, the
Albert Brauner Special Needs Fund has been
established to help seniors in our congregation
afflicted with Alzheimer’s, dementia, or
other problems that affect their ability to live
independently of assisted living or nursing
homes. The first use for this fund is a taxi
fund. Temple Israel has an account with
McCarthy Flowered Cabs. If you would like to
come to Shabbat services, adult education or
any other Temple function and need transportation,
simply call the company at 344-5000
and tell them you want to be taken to Temple
Israel. It’s as simple as that. The driver will
pick you up and the Temple will pay.
Cemetery Committee Offers to Recite Prayers
for Those Unable to Visit Cemetery
It is a custom at the season of the High Holidays for family members or friends to
visit the graves of loved ones to recite El Maley Rahamim the traditional memorial
prayer showing respect and remembrance of a loved one. Sometimes it is not
possible for one to make a visit to the cemetery.
If you have family members buried in the Temple Israel cemetery, the cemetery
committee would consider it a mitzvah for us to say the traditional prayer for
those who are unable to get the cemetery. If you are interested in having us do
this , please inform us via e-mail or regular mail, of the name of the loved one(s)
you would like to remember. Rabbi Mendelsohn will join us at the cemetery
September 13th to recite the prayer.
E-mail the information to: Lewisare@aol.com or tiscran@epix.net or mail to:
Temple Israel Cemetery Committee, 918 E. Gibson St, Scranton, PA 18510
We are unable to accept information by phone calls. Please send
this information to Temple before September 8, 2009.
There is no cost or obligation. Have a healthy and happy New Year.
Shofar Blowing
You CAN Help!!
Come and learn how to blow shofar. “Rabbi Joe” will be teaching about the
shofar – why we use it, and how to blow it! In a one-hour session, you can learn
how to blow the shofar you’ve had sitting on the shelf for years or blow one of
the shofarot in Rabbi’s office. During the month of Elul, Dr. Joseph Schectman
and Rabbi will blow the shofar at the morning service. Then, as we reach Rosh
Hashanah,
1. Join Rabbi as he visits congregants who can’t come to synagogue
2. Blow shofar for our younger members.
3. Join “Rabbi Joe” for the last shofar call at the conclusion of Yom Kippur
Contact “Rabbi Joe” for your shofar blowing class.
Talk to God, Walk with God and Live with God
– God in our Lives- “Rabbi Joe” Mendelsohn
Study text, learn different views and voice your
own, as we study together learning about how
God touches our lives on a daily basis – home,
work, life-cycle events – as individuals, families
and as community. “Rabbi Joe” will guide us as
we touch a different sub-topic each week. We
will meet in the Rabbi’s office (unless the group
gets too large) on Thursday evenings at 5:00
p.m. and end at 5:45. No advance notice
necessary – just come.
