Athletic Department News<br />

Athletic Team Accomplishments<br />

Basketball<br />

The Men’s team finished in 4th place in <strong>the</strong> Mid-South<br />

Conference (MSC) and participated in <strong>the</strong> NAIA National<br />

Tournament in Tulsa, OK. The Men lost in <strong>the</strong> first round to Science<br />

and Arts College.<br />

The Women’s team placed 2nd in <strong>the</strong> MSC and participated in<br />

<strong>the</strong> NAIA National Tournament in Jackson, TN. They lost in <strong>the</strong><br />

2nd round to Lewis & Clark State <strong>University</strong>. Melissa Irvin, an alumnus<br />

from <strong>the</strong> class <strong>of</strong> ‘95, is <strong>the</strong> head coach for this team.<br />

Golf<br />

The Men’s team finished 15th in <strong>the</strong> NAIA National Tournament.<br />

The Women’s team finished 19th. Bill Sergent, a member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> class<br />

<strong>of</strong> ‘78, coaches both teams.<br />

Judo<br />

Both <strong>the</strong> Men’s and Women’s teams finished in 2nd place in <strong>the</strong><br />

National Collegiate Judo Championships. Head coach Doug<br />

Fortune, an alumnus from <strong>the</strong> class <strong>of</strong> ‘74, was selected to manage <strong>the</strong><br />

U. S. National Team at <strong>the</strong> World Judo Championships in Germany<br />

this summer. (Many <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> members <strong>of</strong> this team are also on <strong>the</strong> U.S.<br />

Olympic Team.)<br />

Swimming<br />

The Men’s team finished 4th in <strong>the</strong> NAIA National<br />

Tournament. Lebor Janek, a senior member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> team was<br />

national champion in both <strong>the</strong> 200 and 400-meter individual medleys.<br />

The Women’s team finished in 5th place in <strong>the</strong> NAIA<br />

National Tournament.<br />

Tennis<br />

The Men’s team finished in 4th place in <strong>the</strong> MSC. The Women’s<br />

team finished 2nd. Chin Teck Tan, an alumnus from <strong>the</strong> class <strong>of</strong> ‘87,<br />

coaches both teams.<br />

FASTEST IN THE WORLD!<br />

<strong>Cumberland</strong> College<br />

junior Anthony Kabara,<br />

from Chuka,<br />

Kenya, currently holds<br />

<strong>the</strong> third fastest 800-meter time in<br />

<strong>the</strong> world for this year’s outdoor<br />

track season. Kabara ran a time <strong>of</strong><br />

1:45.29 in <strong>the</strong> 800m at <strong>the</strong> Duke<br />

<strong>University</strong> Invitational Track meet<br />

on April 7, 20<strong>01</strong>.<br />

That time is only a 10th <strong>of</strong> a<br />

second slower than <strong>the</strong> winning Anthony Kabara<br />

time <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Olympic final in <strong>the</strong><br />

800m this past summer. Kabara is a ten-time NAIA All-American<br />

and a five-time NAIA national champion. He currently holds <strong>the</strong><br />

fastest NAIA time in <strong>the</strong> 800m.<br />

Track<br />

The track team placed 13th in <strong>the</strong> NAIA Nationals. Anthony Kabara<br />

won <strong>the</strong> National Championship in <strong>the</strong> 800-meter run. In addition,<br />

Christian Key, Thetlon Detry, Joe Salvato and Anthony Kabara<br />

won <strong>the</strong> 4 x 800 National championship. Floyd Stroud, a ‘74<br />

<strong>Cumberland</strong> graduate, coaches this team.<br />

Baseball<br />

The baseball team finished 9th in <strong>the</strong> MSC. Terry Stigall, an<br />

alumnus from <strong>the</strong> class <strong>of</strong> ‘75, is <strong>the</strong> coach for this team. (See related<br />

story on page 13)<br />

S<strong>of</strong>tball<br />

The s<strong>of</strong>tball team placed 3rd in <strong>the</strong> MSC. Angie Dean, a ‘90<br />

<strong>Cumberland</strong> graduate, coaches this team.<br />

Wrestling<br />

The Men’s wrestling team placed 6th in <strong>the</strong> NAIA National<br />

Tournament. Andy Medders, a sophomore from Holiday, FL., won<br />

<strong>the</strong> national championship in <strong>the</strong> 125lb weight class.<br />

Both <strong>the</strong> men’s and women’s judo teams finished in second<br />

at <strong>the</strong> National Collegiate Judo Championships.<br />

Rankings<br />

<strong>Cumberland</strong>’s athletic program received a 4th place standing in<br />

<strong>the</strong> Sears Director’s Cup National Athletic Awards Program. The<br />

Sears Cup program ranks <strong>the</strong> athletic programs <strong>of</strong> all NAIA schools<br />

in <strong>the</strong> nation. <strong>Cumberland</strong>’s 4th place standing came at <strong>the</strong> end <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> winter rankings and is <strong>the</strong> highest in <strong>the</strong> history <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> college’s<br />

athletic program.<br />
