in Nigeria and <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Kentucky.<br />

His first pastorate was <strong>the</strong> First Baptist Church (Paschal),<br />

Philadelphia, PA, in 1959. As pastor <strong>of</strong> Bethany Baptist Church,<br />

Brooklyn, NY, Dr. Jones has led his congregation in construction <strong>of</strong><br />

a Neo-Gothic edifice, completed in 1967. Bethany Baptist Church<br />

conducts a multi-faceted program with a full-time staff <strong>of</strong> 27 people.<br />

Committed to <strong>the</strong> principle that <strong>the</strong> Church should be free <strong>of</strong> any<br />

and all external loyalties, Bethany has never sought nor accepted<br />

funds from outside sources. The total program is conducted under<br />

<strong>the</strong> sole auspices <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Church. Included in <strong>the</strong> outreach ministries<br />

is a national radio and television ministry.<br />

Correll Brings<br />

Good Tidings<br />

Those in attendance at <strong>the</strong><br />

April 2, 20<strong>01</strong>, <strong>Cumberland</strong><br />

College convocation had no idea<br />

what was in store for <strong>the</strong>m as<br />

<strong>the</strong>y prepared to hear Somerset<br />

resident, Ward Correll, address<br />

<strong>the</strong> audience. After being introduced<br />

by <strong>Cumberland</strong> College<br />

President, Dr. Jim Taylor, Correll<br />

proceeded to one <strong>of</strong> his daily<br />

habits. “I tell myself every morning<br />

that ‘I feel happy, I feel<br />

healthy, I feel terrific,” and “I can<br />

do all things through Christ which streng<strong>the</strong>neth me!’” Correll <strong>the</strong>n<br />

proceeded to <strong>of</strong>fer $1,000 each to <strong>the</strong> next ten people who could<br />

come to him on stage and repeat those words to him. Little did Mr.<br />

Correll know that his monetary gift and accompanying message<br />

would be such a blessing to so many.<br />

As tears <strong>of</strong> joy poured down one woman’s face, she thanked Mr.<br />

Correll for his generosity. Because <strong>of</strong> his selflessness, this woman was<br />

able to pay ano<strong>the</strong>r month’s rent on her home. One grateful<br />

<strong>Cumberland</strong> student will be able to use <strong>the</strong> money to cover <strong>the</strong><br />

remainder <strong>of</strong> his mo<strong>the</strong>r’s open-heart surgery bills. Ano<strong>the</strong>r<br />

<strong>Cumberland</strong> student, whose family works in mills in his hometown,<br />

will be able to cover unexpected expenses. As this student stated,<br />

“Thanks to your generosity, I will not have to trouble my parents<br />

with my financial situation and will be able to put back some money<br />

for next semester.” Several who received <strong>the</strong> money plan to use it for<br />

mission work or to give back to mission programs at <strong>the</strong> College.<br />

Ward Correll currently serves, and in <strong>the</strong> past has served, as an<br />

<strong>of</strong>ficer and director <strong>of</strong> various companies <strong>of</strong> which he is <strong>the</strong> primary<br />

shareholder or owner. These include fast food restaurants, gasoline<br />

stations, convenient stores, shopping centers, health food stores, storage<br />

buildings and land development companies. He was awarded <strong>the</strong><br />

2000 Friend <strong>of</strong> Education Award by <strong>the</strong> Kentucky School Boards<br />

Association, for his support, contributions and dedicated interest in<br />

<strong>the</strong> students <strong>of</strong> his community.<br />

He gives generously <strong>of</strong> his time and self, helping youth, instilling<br />

and promoting self-worth, positive thinking, family values and<br />

Christian morals. He has literally helped change <strong>the</strong> lives <strong>of</strong> generations<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> area’s children.<br />

CUMBERLAND A CCCU MEMBER<br />

<strong>Cumberland</strong> College was recently welcomed as <strong>the</strong> 1<strong>01</strong>st<br />

member institution <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Council for Christian Colleges and<br />

Universities (CCCU.)<br />

Founded in 1889, <strong>Cumberland</strong> has grown to be home <strong>of</strong> more<br />

than 1600 students. The college <strong>of</strong>fers bachelor degrees in <strong>the</strong><br />

arts, sciences, general studies and music, as well as a master’s <strong>of</strong><br />

arts in education.<br />

Dr. Bob Andringa, president <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> CCCU, affirmed <strong>the</strong><br />

recent addition, “<strong>Cumberland</strong> College is a distinguished addition<br />

to <strong>the</strong> CCCU membership. Along with its commitment to integrating<br />

faith and scholarship, it has incorporated student work as<br />

part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> distinctive. We are proud to have <strong>Cumberland</strong> as our<br />

1<strong>01</strong>st member.”<br />

College president Dr. Jim Taylor states, “We are honored to<br />

establish an association with <strong>the</strong> Council for Christian Colleges<br />

and Universities and affirm our commitment to Christian higher<br />

education. For over 112 years, <strong>Cumberland</strong> College has been providing<br />

educational opportunities allowing our students to mature<br />

educationally, morally, and spiritually. Our alumni are giving<br />

back to <strong>the</strong>ir communities around <strong>the</strong> world.”<br />

The Council for Christian Colleges and Universities is an association<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> 1<strong>01</strong> four-year, fully accredited liberal arts institutions<br />

in North America, all with comprehensive curricula rooted<br />

in <strong>the</strong> arts and sciences. The CCCU exists to advance <strong>the</strong> cause<br />

<strong>of</strong> Christ-centered higher education and to help its institutions<br />

integrate scholarship, biblical faith and service.<br />
