PRESIDENT'S 

REPORT 

It is my pleasure to present to you my report for the 

1982/83 season. 

After four seasons as a senior Grade Club we have 

achieved the great distinction of winning the A.C.T. 

Cricket Association Club Championship. Congratulations 

to the Captains and players in all teams, for their success 

and also for the way they worked together as a Club, and 

encouraged one another, to achieve what to some was an 

"impossible dream". 

All four grade teams as well as the City and Suburban 

"A" Grade team qualified for the semi-finals with the 2nds 

and 3rds being Minor Premiers - a truly 'great Club effort. 

This performance can be repeated if the same dedication and 

determination that was so evident last season continues 

into the next and I look forward with enthusiasm to the 

pre-season preparations for 1983/84. 

It must be said that the Club's success in 1982/83 

co-incided with the appointment as Club Coach of Terry 

Davies of the Glamorgan County Cricket Club. Terry's 

enthusiasm for the game and his capacity to relate well to 

all players resulting in greatly Improved performances 

played a large part in the Club's overall success and for 

this I offer the Club's congratulations and thanks. Terry 

will again join us in October when we look forward to a 

continuation of our happy and rewarding relationship. The 

Club's grateful thanks must go to P.A. Credit Union 

Co-operative Ltd. whose generosity made it possible for 

Terry to play for Weston Creek. 

I would like to pay tribute to the Club's Captain, 

Greg Irvine, on again representing the A.C.T. with great 

distinction during the season. The New Zealand trip 

together with the heavy program of other representative 

matches made it difficult to concentrate fully on his Club 

commitments but to his credit he was able to contribute 

significantly to our 1st team's success and was only just 

edged out of winning the Association's batting average. 

The Club is indeed fortunate to have a player and a person 

of Greg's calibre as Captain. 

I would also like to pay tribute to two Club stalwarts 

Jim Nuttall and Brian Kensey, who have decided, temporarily 

I hope, to retire from active Club involvement. Jim, who 

served as the Club Treasurer for four seasons was responible 

for establishing the Club on a sound financial basis. 

As well he involved himself heavily in the general administration 

and day to day running of Club affairs and too few

members appreciate the amount of time he gave and the great 

concern he had for the Club's well being. 

Brian became our Club Captain when we attained 1st 

Grade status and led the Club with great distinction for 

the vital first two years. His great experience helped our 

players to adjust to the higher level of competition and 

through his example set a standard of both attitude and 

play for all to follow. His contribution as Chairman of 

Selectors and previously as Chairman of the Grounds 

Committee set the same high standards. 

They will both be sorely missed and 1 wish them happiness 

and good health in their retirement and trust that one 

day they may find the time to again be associated wiLh Lhe 

Club that they helped to develop so successfully. 

The two grounds for which we are responsible, Stirling 

and Mawson, again gave cause for concern during 1982/83. 

A great deal of time and effort was expended before and 

during the season in negotiations with City Parks officers 

in an attempt to have the outfields maintained in a satisfactory 

manner. While Stirling showed a marked improvement 

from the previous season, and at times was quite 

reasonable, it remains a fact that the outfield was slower 

than any other ground on which our teams played. The outfield 

at Mawson was consistently Loo long for cricket and 

the watering arrangements on the ground caused games to be 

delayed and in some cases abandoned. It is absolutely 

essential that our grounds and wickets be of the highest 

order for it is only in this way Lhat our players can 

develop their talents fully. Much of our efforts and 

resources need to be directed to ensuring that both grounds 

are up to standard for the coming season. 

While our involvement with the Weston Creek Sports 

Centre has not always been comfortable this season saw a 

marked improvement. The Sports Centre has overcome some 

staffing and managerial difficulties while our members have 

developed a greater understanding of the problems of 

administering a small club and the need to give and take. 

It is most important for our members to support "our" Club 

in every way possible to ensure that it trades profitably 

and can thereby provide the type of amenities and services 

to benefit all. I urge all of our members who are not 

financial members of the Sports Centre to join and 

encourage their friends to do likewise, so that the Centre 

may soon be in a position to assist in the general development 

of sport in the Weston Creek area. 

If we were all elated by the success of our senior 

teams then we must also be excited by the tremendous 

development and success of our junior members under the

inspired leadership of Ron Casburn. A record number of 

twenty-nine teams were entered in the various age divisions 

which is a massive increase of ten teams from the previous 

season. The enormous task of administering such a large 

number of teams was carried out, almost single-handed, by 

Ron and the fact that the season was such a resounding 

success is a wonderful tribute to him. All Club members 

and parents in Weston Creek should be grateful for the contribution 

made by Ron Casburn to the welfare of young 

people in our area by providing the opportunity for some 

370 boys to learn and enjoy the game of cricket. 

The 1983/84 season will see the conclusion of the 

4-year sponsorship arrangement with P.A. Credit Union 

Co-operative Ltd. The funds provided by P.A. have been 

significant in the development of our Club from grade 

beginners to Club Champions and has enabled us to keep the 

financial demands on players at the same level for the last 

four years. To P.A.'s General Manager, Geoff Smith, and 

their Directors I wish to express the Club's gratitude for 

their assistance in our progress. I hope that the Club's 

playing success of this season will be seen by them as some 

repayment for their support and that at the conclusion of 

the 1983/84 season will see a further arrangement entered 

into. 

In concluding, I would like to thank all members of 

the Club for contributing to our most successful season 

ever. I would however like to make special mention of 

those whose particular efforts should be recognised by us 

all. 

Trevor Cobbold's pre-season and early season 

fitness and fielding workouts set the scene for 

a more positive attitude in all players which 

continued throughout the season. 

Terry Davies' ability to lift the sights of 

players and to get them to believe in themselves 

was responsible for a general improvement in 

individual performances throughout all teams. 

Brian Kensey's organisation, enthusiasm and tact 

ensured that the most difficult task of team 

selection was carried out smoothly and resulted 

in settled and happy teams. 

Chris Body as usual gave more of himself than can 

reasonably be expected of anyone in his capacity 

as Chairman of the Grounds Committee. 

All members of the Management Committee for their 

contribution to the sound administration of Club 

affairs.

Treasurer, Bruce Coe followed in the tradition 

of previous holders of this office by guiding the 

Club's financial arrangements and ensured that 

we remained on a sound basis. 

Our Secretary of many seasons Percy Samara- 

Wickrama should receive our very special thanks 

for the years of dedicated service he has given 

to the development of the Club's administrative 

structure. Percy's efforts this year, for the 

Association as well as for the Club reflected 

great credit upon us and I know all members will 

join with me in expressing my gratitude.

REPORT 

COMMITTEE 

Ladies and Gentlemen, 

It is with pleasure that I present this Management 

Committee Report of the activities of Weston Creek Cricket 

Club for the season 1982/83. 

The season commenced with the AGM at which a history 

making announcement was made by Mr Geoffrey Smith, the 

Manager of P.A. Credit Union Co-operative Ltd, the Club's 

major sponsor. 

56 members and guests were informed Lhat P.A. Credit 

Union would invite Terry Davies, an English Country professional 

cricketer to come to Australia to play cricket 

with Weston Creek Cricket Club, undertake a coaching programme 

and work for P.A. Credit Union in Public Relations. 

Terry Davies arrived in Canberra at the end of September 

when he was introduced to Canberra Cricket circles 

and the press, at a reception held in the P.A. Credit 

Union's Board Room. 

CRICKET - SENIOR 

The Club had nominated seven teams. Four in the ACTCA 

Grade competitions and three in the CCSCA competitions. 

However due to the reduced number of registrants the 

Executive decided to withdraw the nomination from the 

CCSCA 2nd Grade. 

From a playing point of view, this was a most successful 

year. Five of the six teams reached the semi-finals 

which must be a record for any Club, 

Pre-season practice commenced with light fitness training 

in August, and net practice in September with 

Trevor Cobbold taking over the practice sessions wiLh 

special emphasis on fielding and catching. 

During some practice sessions most senior players were 

video filmed and their "actions" were analysed in 

detail by Lhe individual Leam and Terry Davies. This 

went a long way in helping correct some of Lhe faults 

of the players. 

Captains' reports, match summaries and averages appear 

later in this report.

CRICKET - JUNIOR 

Some 370 junior cricketers registered with the Club. 

The massive task of organising this large number of 

boys into 27 teams, finding coaches and managers for 

each team was admirably carried out by Ron Casburn, and 

our thanks go to Ron for carrying out such a valuable 

task. His report appears later in this report. 

GROUNDS 

Once again the Club had to prepare the pitch at Mawson 

in addition to Stirling. Chris Body spent much time 

and effort directing the proceedings at both grounds. 

Additional sprinklers around the wicket area at 

Stirling improved conditions and facilities but poor 

equipment and facilities at Mawson prevented any 

improvement to that ground. The two temperary sheds 

provided at Mawson proved to be quite unsuitable. 

Michael Lowrey and Ray Stone provided much valuable 

support to Chris Body. 

SELECTIONS 

At best, selections is a difficult and thankless job. 

Brian Kensey handled this job with much expertise and 

produced balanced teams each Saturday. Brian and the 

6 team captains met on the Tuesday prior to each game. 

P.A. CREDIT UNION CRICKET SCHOOL 

The Club held its Junior Cricket School once again 

during the January school holidays, when 130 boys took 

part. This year the School was directed by Terry 

Davies, ably , supported by Andrew MacLeod, Roger Lonie 

and Graham Drew. Rex Bamforth was registrar and Anura 

Samara was ground manager for the week. 

TWILIGHT 

COMPETITION 

This was the 4th year the Club participated in the 

Twilight Competition run by the ACTCA. 

The Club qualified to play in the semi-finals but was 

beaten by Wests. 

Tim Morris won the longest throw competition held in 

conjunction with the Twilight Competition. 

INTERNATIONAL 

CRICKET 

The ACT had a busy international programme this season. 

During the Christmas holidays ACT toured New Zealand. 

In January New Zealand played 3 one day games against 

ACT. 

Then in February Sri Lanka played a one day game.

Greg Irvine toured NZ with the ACT Rep side and also 

played in all the rep games. 

Other members of the Club played a major part in the 

organisation of all the international games. 

PUBLICATIONS 

The Club magazine "Cover Point" continued to be published 

for the 4th year, and maintained its format. 

The Junior magazine "Extra Cover" appeared several 

times during the season at irregular intervals. 

SPONSORSHIP 

P.A. Credit Union Co-operative Ltd continued to support 

the Club in a very positive manner and has helped to 

kepp the playing costs down to a minimum for both 

seniors and juniors. 

15 other sponsors helped to defray costs of production 

of the magazines - 

ENSIGN TYRES & EXHAUST of Botany Street, Phillip sponsored 

Greg Irvine during his tour of New Zealand. 

SHORT HOLDINGS PTY LTD of Fyshwick provided the cricket 

gear for Terry Davies. 

The Club's appreciation and thanks go to them all. 

SUPPLIERS 

SHORT HOLDINGS PTY LTD of Fyshwick continued to provide 

an excellent service as the sole supplier of sporting 

goods for the Club. 

NEW 

PLAYWELL STORE in Brierly St, Weston supplied shirts, 

caps and clothing for Junior players. 

TROPHIES 

P.A. CREDIT UNION CO-OPERATIVE LTD provided two new 

specially designed perpetual trophies - 

(a) for the young cricketer of the year 

(b) for the cricketer of the year. 

NOEL SHORT of SHORT HOLDINGS PTY LTD provided another 

specially designed trophy known as the "Short Sport 

Trophy" to be fought for between WCCC and Queanbeyan 

CC. 

MEETINGS 

The Management Committee met regularly on eight 

occasions every month starting from September. The 

Executive Committee met ten times on dates in between 

the Management Committee meetings.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS 

Many members contributed to the successful management 

of the affairs of the Club. 

I wish to express my gratitude to the selectors, the 

captains, members of all sub-committees and Lhe players 

who helped make this the most successful season. 

My thanks to all the wives who willingly put up with 

their cricketing husbands' indulgence on Saturdays. 

Finally my thanks to Mary, my wife, and the children 

who had acted as my telephone answering service at all 

odd hours throughout the

Grounds 

For the season 1982/83 the Club Lried to improve Lhe 

grounds and only succeeded partly. The facilities at 

Mawson improved from last year, with the addition of two 

workmen's sheds. At Stirling, after a meeting with who's 

who of City Parks in early September, the Club was encouraged 

in what was said, but unfortunately most of the 

improvements discussed didn't eventuate. I would like to 

thank the staff at Rivett for everything they did throughout 

the season. 

For Mawson, the groundsman was Michael Lowrey who 

worked hard in preparing the pitches throughout Lhe season 

together with the members of 3rd and 4th Grades, thank you. 

At Stirling, I would like to thank everyone who worked 

on the pitch, and the surrounding, to Ray Stone, who did 

a great job on Saturdays in finishing preparation of Lhe 

ground. 

Thank you to Don and Percy for their support throughout 

the season, especially when things didn't go to plan; 

but to the whole Club who did a marvellous job with their 

help.

Junior Cricket Report 

I am pleased to present this report on Junior Cricket 

during the 1982/83 season. 

The 1981/82 season saw a record number of boys playing 

Junior Cricket, The 1982/83 saw another record number 

of boys playing. In 1981/82 we had 275 boys registered 

and 20 teams. This past season we had 370 boys registered 

and 27 teams entered in the Junior competition. 

There was also a general increase in the number of 

teams in the competition throughout Canberra, and because 

of this, and the shortage of grounds, on Saturday mornings 

all Under 10 and some Under 11 games were played on Saturday 

afternoons. The Under 10 competition played under 

modified rules and these arrangements worked quite well. 

Of the 27 teams 15 participated in lhe semi-finals 

and 6 won premierships. They were Under 14 Division 2, 

Under 13 Division 1, Under 13 (3) Division 5, Under 11 

Division 3, Under 10 Division 4 and Under 10 Division 5 

(Chapman) . 

Three of our players, Darren Griffiths, Jamie Baucher 

and Andrew Welsford won the National Mutual Cricketer of 

the Week Award. There was also a number of boys in A.C.T. 

Representative teams and I would like to take this opportunity 

to congratulate these boys on their achievements. 

Because of the large number of teams it was very 

difficult to find enough coaches and managers to look 

after each team. As in past years we were supported by 

some of the senior cricketers and interested members of 

the community. Thank you to those people. 

I would like to thank the P.A. Credit Union for their 

sponsorship during the year. It was through the Credit 

Union that we were able to use the services of Terry 

Davies to help coach some of the boys. 

I would like, to thank all the mothers, fathers and 

members of the community for all their help during the 

past season and I look forward to your continued support 

during the 1983/84 season.

Selections 17 

The 1982/83 season has easily been the Club's most 

successful in its 4 years in the Grade competition. 

Winning the Club Championship, all Grade sides plus the 

CCSCA "A" Grade team in the semis indicates the successes 

of the season. Why did we have such a good season? We 

did not gain many new players; we lost a few. 

The answer can be found in Greg Irvine's First Grade 

report of last season. I would like to quote from it: 

"We must learn from these experiences and the 

mistakes made by the administration, the captains 

and the players. They must not occur in 

the 1982/83 season if Weston Creek is to prosper 

as a Club. Greater emphasis must be placed by 

players on training harder, improving their 

skills and techniques and generally have a more 

professional attitude towards the game." 

The Club took a more positive and professional 

approach to cricket this season. We did learn from most 

of our previous mistakes. Practice was not a social event. 

Players did practice, fielding practice was taken seriously 

and worked at for the first time by everyone. 

I congratulate the administration and players. 

One other point to note is that Lhe Club is fielding, 

more experienced teams now. We have always had experienced 

players in the lower grades. But now our policy of 

giving the younger players a chance is paying off. These 

players though st;ill young (at least compared to me) have 

had up to 4 years grade experience and we are now reaping 

the benefits of this policy. 

I would like to thank Bon and Percy for their support 

throughout the year. This has been invaluable. A big 

thank you to all the captains for their co-operation. It 

is never easy selecting sides but the job was made easier 

with their help. 

I don't think many players would realise how much 

time Bill Northam put into selections this year. He shared 

much of the work with me as well as spending much time in 

organising his own side. Thanks Bill. 

Two areas which do need fixing up next season are: 

(i) Player dropout - many players dropped out late in the 

week causing team changes. At least once the teams 

as selected on Monday night bore no resemblance to 

those that took the field on Saturday. This problem 

led to the dropping of the 7th side mid-season.

(ii) Players play for the Club, not a team - it causes 

many problems if players gets a liking to play in one 

team and no other. This problem was not as bad as 

last year but it still exists. 

I think it must be emphasised that we should work

activities for the year.

First Grade semi-finalists for the first time. This 

sums up the success of the First Grade side. The 1982/83 

season was a make or break year for the side after finishing 

9th, 8th and then 10th in the previous three seasons. 

We didn't win the competition but we proved to ourselves 

and to the other clubs that we do have potential. This 

will be the goal for next season.

The reasons for the improved performances from the 

were: 

- a more professional approach to practice and match 

preparation 

- belief and confidence in our ability 

- a positive attitude to each match. 

This new approach to our cricket was largely due to 

the encouragement and ideas of Terry Davies and the willingness 

of all players to learn from and help each other. 

From this, a tremendous team spirit developed. 

The batting of the side was the big improvement in 

performance from the previous season. In 1981/82, only 

two players scored more than 150 runs (but less than 200), 

This season, 7 players scored more than 150 (and 3 of 

these scored more than 300). One area for improvement is 

to develop an ability not only to chase runs and win but 

to bat first and win. All 5 wins in the season were after 

we batted second in the match. 

The bowling overall lacked penetration. Only Tim 

Morris consistently provided breakthrough when required. 

The other bowlers did bowl well but were not able to consistently 

support Tim. 

The fielding was also a big improvement on the previous 

season. This can mainly be put down to the fact 

that all players practised hard at this side of the game. 

However, this can still be improved on next season, 

Chris Body - "Legs" was an inspiration to the side with 

his enthusiasm despite having a painful knee injury all 

season. Batted well on occasions but needs to turn 20's 

into 50's and 100's. 

Chris Burgess - is maturing into an extremely useful number 

3. Thinks about his cricket (sometimes too much). 

Also needs to score 50's & 100's instead of 20's, 30's and 

40's. Fielded excellently. 

Rob Chapman - found that the loose ball gets dispatched 

more regularly in First Grade. Will be a better bowler 

due to the experience of the season.

32 Peter Day - batted very well. Has tremendous potential 

and will realise it if he works more at practice and his 

conditioning. 

Terry Davies - gave the side many solid starts. Should 

score more runs and centuries next season. Was an inspiration 

to whole team. Kept wickets very tidily. 

Graeme Drew - has the ability if he will only believe in 

himself. Fielded very well. 

Greg Irvine - showed his real batting class this year. 

Batted with much responsibility. Bowled well but did not 

get many wickets. Occasionally did too much with the ball. 

Excellent fielding in slips. 

Roger Lonie - is starting to blossom into a consistent bat. 

Batted well under pressure. Next season will see him 

develop even further. Fielded brilliantly at times. 

John Macartney - batted very well at the start of the season 

but dropped away later on. Unfortunately did not get 

many overs. Needs to tighten up more and not give as many 

free balls. 

Andrew MacLeod - did not display his true potential. Needs 

to relax more and believe in himself. Fielded brilliantly 

in the outfield. 

Tim Morris - easily the side's most effective bowler. 

Bowled very fast at times. Still needs to look after and 

prepare himself better. Was not able to display his batting 

potential due to batting depth of side. 

Peter Neal - very tight bowler who will be even better 

next year. Was always able to tighten up the attack. Was 

a very useful acquisition for Club. 

Tim Overland - had a bit of letdown from previous season. 

Needs to get his rhythm right and stick to it. Will 

definitely have a big one next season.

South Woden had to battle 

hard for runs against Weston 

Creek at Phillip and can thank a 

partnership of 92 for the third 

wicket between Steve O'Reilly 

and Ken Stone for its sound position 

at stumps. 

The home team was wellplaced 

at stumps with a total of 

eight for 193 with O'Reilly making 

65, Stone 36 and Brett Hannam 

weighing in with 50 not out. 

The Weston Creek bowlers 

gained plenty of assistance from 

the pitch, troubling the batsmen 

with deliveries that seamed 

around constantly. 

O'Reilly showed plenty of application 

during his stay at the 

crease and handled the conditions 

perfectly. 

Hannam added some bite to 

the South Woden tail as he set 

about the bowling in aggressive 

fashion. 

Tim Morris finished with the 

best figures for Weston Creek of 

five for 44, three of his victims 

being caught by keeper Terry 

Davies who took six catches in all 

for the day.

CRICKET 

Good scoring in 

one-day matches 

In the sixth round of the ACT 

Cricket Association first grade 

competition, played yesterday, 

Weston Creek beat Queanbeyan in 

an entertaining limited-over match 

at Manuka Oval. 

Queanbeyan batted first on a good 

track and scorcd 164 for the loss of five 

wickets from 57 of its allotted 65 overs. 

Wayne Campbell and Gary Samuels 

got their side off to a great start with 

an opening stand of 75. Campbell was 

the first to go when his score was 31 

and at lunch Queanbeyan was looking 

good at one for 92 off 32 overs. 

After lunch Weston Creek applied a 

lot more pressure and, with the field 

ably supporting a more economical 

bowling attack, it was able to slow the 

Queanbeyan run-rate considerably. 

Peter Neal bowled 17 overs for 29 

runs and was well backed up by Chris 

Burgess with his contribution of eight 

overs for only 16 runs. 

Weston Creek began the chase with 

Terry Davies looking good and Brian 

Kensey teasing the bowlers by turning 

his back on loose deliveries and being 

struck in the kidneys, or playing over 

the top of better balls and watching 

them sail over the stumps. 

He did settle down, however, and his 

47 runs was a valuable contribution in 

the 100-run opening stand. 

During the week there will be a big 

smile walking about town with a little 

Welshman behind it. Davies finally 

achieved what he has been threatening 

to do since the beginning of the season 

— compile a good score. 

His 79 runs set the scene for the

comfortable victory enjoyed by Weston 

Creek and until he was bowled with the 

score at 173 he never gave a chancc. 

The 100-run opening partnership 

came in 118 minutes. Davies' 50 took 

130 minutes (no boundaries in this 

total) and his stay at the crease lasted 

for 185 minutes. 

He scored a lot of his runs behind the 

wicket with some beautiful deflections 

down the leg side and cut the ball very 

effectively. When the chancc presented 

itself he was quick to drive any halfvolley 

and was ever-alert for the quick 

single. 

Chris Burgess came in at first drop 

with the dismissal of Kensey and he 

played a good support role for Davies 

while settling in. He finished with 36 

not out.

South Woden batted on for 

a time yesterday and reached 

220 before closing for the loss 

of nine wickets. 

Kensey and Davies were intent 

on giving their side a good 

start and achieved it with 

great success as Kensey continued 

his good form in scoring 

85 and Davies batted 

solidly to make 50. 

After the great start by the 

openers Chris Body and Greg 

Irvine chimed in with useful 

contributions to ensure their 

side of victory. Body finished 

with 33 and Irvine 20. 

Brett Hannam and Simon 

Ov erland bore the brunt of 

the bowling to finish with two 

wickets apiece and Ken Stone 

chimed in to take three for 10.

Weston Creek was in a strong 

position against Western District 

in the ACT Cricket 

Association first-grade match 

at O'Connor yesterday when it 

dismissed the home side for 143 

but it lost two crucial wickets 

before stumps. 

The Weston Creek bowlers kept 

the Wests batsmen under restraint 

for most of the innings and apart 

from a hard-hitting knock of 43 

from Neil Davidson, which included 

five fours and three sixes, 

were always in control. 

In reply to Wests total of 143, 

Weston Creek lost Brian Kensey 

for four and Chris Burgess for nine 

and was two for 38 at stumps. 

Wests batsmen had no answer to 

the restricting tactics adopted by 

Weston Creek and many of them 

threw their wickets away with rash 

shots. 

Wests began slowly but steady, 

with Jamie Pyke and Steve 

Marshall intent on keeping their 

wickets intact and the partnership 

realised 26 before Pyke was dismissed.

everything with great power. 

When Davidson was dismissed 

for 43, the Wests innings folded.

Greg Irvine and Tim Morris 

shared the bowling honours for

Weston Creek had an hour to bat 

and appeared to be going comfortably

Almost a totally successful season up to the loss of 

a tense semi-final; we finished well in front on the points 

table with 188.48 (82 primary, 41.28 batting, 65.20 bowling) 

. Probably the best feature was that this was a team 

effort. With some very good individual performances and 

good application by those not in form on the day we had 

some good wins in what should have been close matches. 

Good support in the field saw bowlers getting sides out 

cheaply and while bowling was our strength batting was 

mostly sensible and appropriate - we had only two real 

collapses, one against Queanbeyan on a good wicket and one 

on the first morning of the semi-final on a doubtful 

wicket. 

My only comment on the semi-final is to hope the 

Association notes the resentment felt when the leading 

side plays the 4th side on the latter's home ground, loses 

the toss and thereby the match being asked to bat in dry 

weather on a moist pitch prepared by the 4th side. Damp 

wickets are probably inevitable on 2 day wickets with 

10.30am starts, but it would seem fairer if the top side 

had the choice of their own or the opposition's home 

ground - or a neutral one. 

Ray Kent - a steady opening bat and excellent gully field. 

Gave a 100% team effort and will be difficult to replace 

if he retires ffom opening the batting. Thanks Ray for 

the excellent handling of the equipment. 

Andrew MacLeod - batted very well and has matured as a 

batsman capable of handling difficult situations. Covered 

acres of ground in the field. Will soon be a regular 

first grader . 

Paddy O'Brien - batting record speaks for itself. Can 

dominate an attack and on this form with a full season 

will be back in first grade. With experience has become 

a slips specialist. 

Mat Collins - good potential with bat and ball. Bad luck 

and inexperience on turf were his problems but he'll be 

back. 

Wal Hali - an inconsistent season with the bat, but a good 

team man and had a couple of innings of character. 

Fielded very well. 

Paul Duffus - a good all round season. 25 catches and a 

couple of match winning innings. A good thinking vice 

captain.

Col Imms - our secret weapon. Overwhelmed several attacks 

and won about 3 matches with his hitting. Fielding was 

good and still has great potential as a leg spin bowler 

if he would decide on this style. 

Grant Christensen - potentially a top cricketer. A very 

good catcher and needs only to work on his one serious 

batting problem (and buy sprigged boots to bowl in!). 

Dick Cotton - lucky with the toss, but not the vital one! 

As captain tactical bowling changes kept his average within 

reason . 

Trevor Cobbold - on limited appearances bowled very well 

and provided dedicated support as a lower order batsman. 

A marathon semi-final innings almost saved the match. 

Tom Anderson - full of sensible batting and advice. A very 

valuable team member. Every side needs a couple of 

players like him. 

Laurie O'Mara - "The Wanderer". An outstanding effort as 

an opening bat and should be able to improve. Gets himself 

out more often than the opposition does. 

Rob Chapman - bowled to death by his lazy captain but responded 

magnificently. Becoming convinced it's a batsman's 

game is considering transformation and with application 

has the ability to achieve this. 

Graham Drew - put in great effort in his few appearances 

and batted well, fielded very well and bowled some useful 

spells. Capable of dominating the bowling and will often 

do so if content to start wtih a little more care. Also 

good bowling potential. 

Many others played well for us in limited opportunities. 

Peter Neal and Tim Overland deservedly on their 

way to first grade and others filling in for a match or 

two. Special thanks to John fiowdler who did well in his 

few matches (one match winning hit was a 6!). Ron Foster, 

Clive Jones, Alan Giles, Tim Kennedy, Chris Harris and 

Peter Richards also played hard for us. Most could play 

well again. 

Thanks also to the workers, especially Chris Body, 

Frank Lonie, Ray Stone, Ray Kent, Don Brooker, Percy and 

Kense.

This was a most successful season, marred only by our 

failure to win the Final. The competition was close 

throughout, only a few points separating teams in the top 

half of the Table. This is evidenced by our loss in Round 

8 causing the side to fall from 4th to 7th place. We then 

won the next few games very convincingly to finish iif 3rd 

place, and beat City in the semi-final. In these five 

matches we scored 1083 runs for the loss of 41 wickets 

(average 26.41) compared with our opponents' 635 runs for 

61 wickets (average 10.41). A major feature of our play 

in these matches was safe catching, holding 28 and dropping 

none. 

We justifiably entered the Final in confident mood, 

but the dropped catches allowed Queanbeyan to score 156 

and our batting collapsed against accurate fast bowling 

to be out for 70. We then had them reeling at 4-9 but 

once again dropped catches let them off the hook. Most 

were missed in the slips and appeared to be the result of 

tension rather than lack of concentration. 

The side suffered in the first half of the season 

from too many changes, none of which were the fault of 

selectors, but rather inconsistent availability in this 

and higher grades, and by the 8th Round 29 players had 

appeared in the side. From then on we fielded a consistent 

and strong team and this was reflected in the results. 

In the batting Chris Harris had a wonderful season, 

scoring three 50's, and John Bowdler showed admirable consistency 

as an opening bat, scoring one 50 and three 40's. 

Valuable 50's were also scored by Lionel Laverty, Keith 

Jones, Bob Coughlan and Paul Evans. Clive Jones showed 

great promise with scores of 32no. and 44, both in difficult 

situations. A particularly pleasing aspect of the 

batting was the tenacity of purpose shown by all players 

at the crease, and it is difficult to remember anyone 

throwing their wicket away with a rash shot. Fighting for 

runs all the way down the order certainly helped to build 

big totals. 

The bowling honours went to Lionel Laverty, who joining 

the side in Round 10, ended with 29 wickets from 5 

matches, including three match winning performances. Paul 

Bamforth bowled superbly on his day (for example 8-15 

against South Woden) and injected some much needed penetration 

into the attack. Steve Barnsley bowled consistently 

well, peaking with 5-51 against Easts, and was 

unlucky not to take more wickets. Keith Jones demonstrated 

his talent as an off-spinner in the Final, taking 

6-55.

It would be invidious to single out any of the 

fielders as outstanding because everyone performed well 

and to the best of their ability. Behind the stumps Paul 

Evans proved a worthy successor to Peter Moseley and Peter 

Richards. In six matches he let through only 17 byes out 

of 946 runs scored, and took 7 catches and 3 stumpings. 

As captain I enjoyed the season immensely and should 

like to thank all the players for their support, with particular 

thanks to Chris Harris for his advice on the field 

and help in organisation. I should also like to thank 

Brian Kensey as Chairman of Selectors, Lew Jones for his 

meticulous scoring, and all our many supporters, not least 

Andrea and the boys.

It was a significant year for the Club in winning Lhe 

Club Championship and Fourth Grade played its part in 

helping to win the Championship. 

The team won the Minor Premiership and the "Bel Air" 

Shield for the highest points scored in any grade in the 

Association. After a meritorious outright win in the 

semi-final we were soundly beaten in the grand final so 

that elusive premiership has yet to come our way. 

Congratulations to the members for a whole hearted 

team efforl, to the well deserved Lrophy winners and to 

those achieving personal milestones during the season. 

Everyone should feel they made a significant contribution 

at some sLage to Lhe team's success. The main sLrengLh 

of the side was its fast and medium pace bowling attack 

which was well supported by a very consisLenL and able 

fielding side. Overall, our baLLing was not consisLenL 

LhroughouL the season and in only two innings were 200 

runs scored. However, our winning record of four outright 

wins, four first innings wins, Lwo draws and Lwo 

first innings losses in home and away games was a great 

achievement. 

The 'team' this year was represented by 36 players 

and all their efforts were greatly appreciated. With such 

a high turnover of the team many personal disappointments 

were suffered by a number of players and it is a tribute 

to the Club spirit that members were able to settle down 

and pull together make it such a memorable season. The 

captaincy on the field was 'liade a lot easier with the 

friendly advice of senior members of the side and it was 

encouraging to have suggestions made by the younger 

members of the team. 

Finally, congratulations to Brian Kensey on his 

success as Chairman of Selectors. His success this season 

will be a hard act to follow.

Season 1982/83 was fairly successful for the Fifths 

both in terms of on field success with the side making 

the finals and in terms of individual achievements and 

recreation provided. 

The CCSCA Firsts competition was somewhat uneven 

with the Fifths from the District Clubs meeting firsts 

sides from Daramalan and KNRSL. It is of course an 

unfortunate consequence of a large Club like ours that 

the lower sides suffer numerous changes throughout the 

season: some 36 players took the field for the Fifths. 

On the positive side the prospect of promotion was an 

incentive as goo-d performances were generally rewarded. 

On the field, we began the season well with two 

early outrights and the extra points gained and regular 

wins later kept us in the four throughout the season. 

All players contributed to the success of the team with 

all batsmen getting at least one good score and all 

bowlers performing well, although sometimes without luck. 

I won't single out any individuals but would like to congratulate 

all players on their efforts. The good spirit 

in the side and the sporting behaviour of all players 

should be noted. 

I would like to thank the Club Executive, Brian, the 

other captains and particularly the cricketers of the 

Fifths'for their help throughout the season.

Realistically, this team was designed to provide 

cricket for any players who were available only for one 

week in each two-day round and those cricketers who were 

keen but with limited ability. Statistically, we won 

only six games and finished with 52 points. However, we 

were unfortunate not to make the semi-finals as we lost 

two games by two runs, one by one run, and one by four 

runs. It was only inexperience which led to our downfall 

especially in the fielding where several crucial catches 

were dropped. Also, after Christmas only once did two 

batsmen manage to score more than 25 runs a piece in any 

innings. Nevertheless, some fine performances were 

recorded especially against Teachers and Workers (who are 

the leading premiership contenders) where they were dismissed 

for 47 and 67 respectively with Greg Ratford (5/11) 

and Perry McCauley (6/23) being the respective destroyers. 

The other bowling highlight was Bill Northam's unbelievable 

hat-trick against Queanbeyan. On the batting front, 

both Barney Devlin (115no.) and Anthony Lilley (129) 

scored excellent centuries, while Anthony Lilley, Alex 

Simmons, Greg -Ratford, Steve McDonald and Bill Northam 

all secured half-centuries during the season. Another 

highlight was a second-wicket partnership of 161 by 

Barney Devlin and Greg Ratford against Wests. 

Overall, I would like to thank the 47 players who 

helped form a team throughout the season. Unfortunately 

the large turnover hindered our prospects of making the 

four as we were unable to form a consistently solid 

batting line-up.
