FROM THE PRESIDENT, JERRY BARNETT
Anyone wishing to rent space in a room for display purposes at the
Fall Meeting for Saturday and Sunday, November 8 & 9, 1980, please
contact me before October 15. This is to help our suppliers show
off their wares. The Conference Scrap Books will also be on display
for the weekend.
THE MEMO IS MOVING!
1 '
By the time this issue hits the mail we expect to be moved to:
277 Amanda Court, Oregon City, OR 97045. Please make the necessary
roster changes for your editor and for Cascade SCC Executive Board
Rep. Chuck Clemans.
ATTENTION DRIVERS - FROM LICENSE REGISTRAR CHERYL KINNAMAN
If you have moved since application for license was made, be sure to
send a change of address to the License Registrar to insure getting a
1981 renewal bulletin. Your 1980 license expires December 31, andrenewals
will be going out in mid-December. The deadline for holding
your number is January 31, 1981 (see page 6 #C of Competition Regulations).
All numbers will be released after that time. Twenty eight
two•digit numbers changed hands last year, so get your renewal in early
if you want to keep your number.
FROM R.O.D. DIRECTOR, BILL DODSON
The season is finishing up rapidly. Banquet season is just around the
corner. Remember to send in your logbook no later than September 30th -
the last ICSCC race is September 20/21. The timing on returning your
logbook is important so that I may order awards for the banquet. You
should send your logbook to: 4020 Bledsoe #K-6, Bremerton, WA 98310.
There will be an R.O.D. Meeting at the Fall Meeting. It will be held
November 8th, Saturday, at the Doubletree Inn located at Southcenter
in the Seattle/Tacoma area. Keep an eye on your Memos for more specific
details on the time, room number, etc. I hope that you will make plans
to attend so that this past season can be discussed as well as the 1981
season. The banquet is always a lot of fun so if you cannot attend the
dinner portion, come for the awards and good time later. If you plan on
attending the R.O.D. Meeting, please indicate your intentions when you
return your logbook. This will give me an idea of how large a room we
will need.
Hope to see you at toe R.O.D. Meeting and the banquet!
FROM THE RACE STEWARD, JOHN KENDREW - S.I.R. AUGUST 17/18
Bruce Benson should never have called it the "Sunshine Sprints!" That's
as bad as racing a car with a "For sale" sign on it. Grey, dank, windy,
rainy, and generally miserable weather greeted the racers. The long layoff
produced the usual large grids. Fortunately there were no major
delays so everyone got their full 30 minutes of racing.
This weekend marked a change in our policies as we beg~n to fine drivers
for misdemeanors. The rule book does give the Steward such a right and
we intend to use it as an intermediate form of punishment. Three
drivers were caught as follows: Car #57 cw fined 320.• passed on yellow
in practice. Car #115 cw fined 320. - passed on yellow in practice.
Car #49 cw fined $20. - 5 infractions in practice. Note that all of
these were in practice. Penalties for misbehavior in a race are steeper.
During the racing four other cars were also penalized. Car #29 cw was
disqualified for no muffler. Car #416 ow was disqualified for seven
infractions and for failing to respond to the black flag. Car #59 cw
was penalized one lap for jumping the start. Car #82 cw was docked
one lap for passing under the yellow.
The formula race achieved a new high in infraction reports. ( Four
pages worth) Considering the conditions we were lucky that's all it was.
A heavy rain combined with oil from the earlier races turned the track
into a skid pad. mhe wonder was that there were no major incidents.
The senior observers reported no visible stupidities. Almost every
incident was a result of the appalling conditions.
ALL OIL
COOLERS
ARE NOT
CREATED
EQUAL.
AND
MESA IS
WINNING
PROOF!
Competition, whether in the wilds of Baja or on the high banks at Daytona, demands the ultimate in
cooling and reliability. MESA answers this challenge with its incredible stacked plate coolers. World
Champions like Rod Hall and Bobby Unser know the MESA design is superior in every way to oldfashioned
tube and fin types and will settle for nothing less on their vehicles. Lightweight, efficient, and
practically indestructible, the MESA cooler gives your engine that winning edge. MESA-the world's #1
name in oil cooling.
OUR TURN! We have tested a MESA Cooler ~n our race car this year
and witnessed considerably lower oil temps as compared to the
popular British coolers.
OUR CONCLUSION: MESA - • cools better
• is more durable
• lower restriction
• is "cheaper"-
NOW THAT'S A HARD ACT TO FOLLOW!
STEWARD'S REPORT (Continued from page 1)
I ~lso want to congratulate the Sports Racing field on a magnificent piece of driving. A car spun in the middle of
the field at turn 9. It slid helplessly back and forth across the track while the rest of the cars dodged. No one
made contact! One of the finest examples of phenominal avoidance I've seen.
Other proplems arose this weekend. The F. Vee race caused a problem when it was discovered that the majority of thee
field was illegal. The ICSCC book specifies 1978 specs. for Vee. Unfortunately the engine regs have changed
drastically since then. As a result it was decided that 1980 rules will be in effect from now on for F. Vee. (Ed's
note: The ICSCC Executive Board approved by phone August 19, 1980 changing Comp. Reg. 1306 B to read in part "1980
SCCA rules will apply for Formula Vee.")
If any other formula group finds itself in the above situation please contact the Steward immediately.
It sould be noted by all drivers and corner crews that ICSCC does not prohibit course workers from push-starting
cars during a race. The only restriction is if it can be done safely. If not, the driver is out of luck. There is
also no restriction on outside assistance of the driver of a disabled car provided said assistance has the appropriate
passes. (Ed's note: ~passes only required in some areas)
Back to the street tires for production cars controversy. I received a letter from Mike Crozier which is most
interesting. I have forwarded it to the Memo Editor - it is enlightening to say the least. (Mr. Crozier's three page
letter was too long to be printed here. I will make it available to anyone interested at P.I.R. Sept. 20/21 in the
Rose Cup Room, Ed.)
