From Teaching to the Coffee
Grind at Central Market
York Suburban High
School teacher Stephen
Whiteley can be found in
his classroom during the
school day.
On weekends and
over the summer, you’ll
find him at Take Five
Expresso Bar inside
York’s Central Market.
“I discovered Take
Five Expresso when I
was on jury duty in January
of 2003,” Steve says.
“I absolutely hit it off
with Craig Chambers,
who was the owner. I
went back every Saturday
as a customer.”
Last July Craig
Chambers – who was a
York Suburban graduate
– died of a heart attack.
The future of the coffee
bar was in doubt. “We
were encouraged to purchase
it by the employees,”
Steve notes.
In September, Steve
and his wife, Sharon,
bought the business.
Sharon usually works
the stand on Tuesdays,
Thursdays and Saturdays
during the school year,
with Steve joining her on
Saturdays.
The Whiteleys’ two
children, Dan, 14, and
Emma, 12, are involved
in other activities and are
not involved with the
coffee bar.
Steve, who holds degrees
from Dartmouth
and the University of
New Mexico, is an earth
science, astronomy and
oceanography teacher at
York Suburban High
School. He admits he
was somewhat surprised
by what it takes to run a
business: “Regulations
… insurance …utilities
charges.”
“Central Market is
undergoing something of
a renaissance,” he notes.
“New vendors are coming
in. We’re optimistic.”
He adds, Central
Market is “a real gem. I
wish more people in
York would patronize it.”
