Budget
Wins
Approval
The York Suburban
School Board has
adopted a budget for
the 2004-05 fiscal year.
The budget calls
for $31,808,775 in expenditures,
a 6.93 percent
increase of
$2,062,129 over the
current budget.
The plan calls for a
millage rate of 17.50,
up slightly from the
16.22 mills now in effect.
For a home assessed
at $100,000, the
increase will be $128
a year.
The major expenditures
in the budget
are increases in salaries
and benefits —
most of which are
mandated by contracts
– and increasing enrollment
in the district.
“This budget holds
the line as much as
possible on spending
while maintaining the
high quality education
expected by the residents
of the York Suburban
School District,”
said Dr. William
Hartman, Jr., Superintendent.
The Class of 2015
Begins the Journey
The same week the York Suburban Class of 2004
was leaving the school system, the first graders at
Valley View Center were preparing to embark on their
educational journey as the Class of 2015.
On display at the Valley View ice cream social
that week was a quilt featuring the work of the first
graders. Each first grade students drew his/her favorite
memory on fabric. The pieces were then assembled
into a quilt by the Valley View Center Parents
Committee.
The plan is to display the quilt in the school next
year. After that year, the quilt will be stored and the
box opened and the quilt displayed during the post
graduation reception at the Valley View Center for
the Class of 2015.
350 ATTEND YS
POST PROM PLUS PARTY
The theme was “It’s
About Time” and more
than 350 York Suburban
students and guests took
part in this year’s Post
Prom Party.
The York Suburban
Senior High School was
transformed into a time
machine. This year’s
prom was held on a Saturday
evening, which allowed
event organizers
more time to set up the
various time periods inside
the school and in the
courtyard.
Entering through a
“time tunnel,” the young
people could decide on
eras from medieval to the
Wild West to the 1950s,
’60s, ’70s and into the future.
The alcohol and substance-free,
adult-supervised
party provided an
entire night of activities
that did not end until the
morning following the
prom at the Valencia.
Entertainment included:
Velcro wall
jumping, mechanical
bull riding, sumo wrestling
suits, inflatable wall
climbing, dance and
video machines, ping
pong, air hockey and a
wide assortment of
games.
New this year was the
showing of a horror film
in the auditorium.
Comedians and York
Suburban musicians performed..
And, of course, there
was food … lots of food
… inside the school and
in the enclosed courtyard.
“The food was out of
this world,” said student
Sean Erdenbrack. “Especially
the milkshakes.
I went back for seconds
and thirds on them.”
In addition to the
popular milkshakes,
other foods included:
Iced cappuccino, snow
balls, turkey legs,
chicken nuggets, mozzarella
sticks, sushi, crepes
and pad thai. Desserts
were available all night.
Prizes were awarded
through games and drawings.
The larger prizes –
either donated or paid for
by the committee – included
a television set, a
kayak and a palm pilot,
as well as cash and gift
certificates.
More than 250 individuals
and businesses
donated food, products
or cash for the party.
Over 100 adult volunteers
were involved before,
during and after the
party.
Planning is already
underway for next year’s
Post Prom party.
No taxpayer funds
are expended on the
event. All money comes
from donations or
fundraisers throughout
the year.
Some of the funds
raised for the yearly Post
Prom plus party come
from Giant and Weis
shopping cards. The
shopping cards – which
provide a 5 percent rebate
for the Post Prom
committee — are available
by calling Carol
Kirby at 854-8173.
Donations are welcomed
throughout the
year. Checks, made payable
to “YS Post Prom,”
should be mailed to the
Post Prom plus Is Looking
for 2005 Leaders
It takes a lot of volunteers and time to bring
together an event as exciting and successful as
Post Prom plus.
While the students were enjoying this year’s
night-long event, the adults who brought all
the pieces together were thinking about next
year’s party.
programs by joining with
seven other school districts
in York County.
Residents of each district
will be able to select
Community Education
earning $4,650.
To celebrate both
schools’ accomplishments,
the Literacy
Council arranged visits
to the schools by Mike
DeJean, a relief pitcher
for the Baltimore Orioles,
the Orioles Bird
Mascot and WSBA 910-
AM sports personality
Jeff Shiffman.
Mike DeJean told the
students about the difference
reading made in his
County School of Technology.
The new co-op states:
“By combining our programs
and working together,
the participating
districts are able to offer
you more classes, more
locations … more
choices for your educational
experience.”
The districts, in addition
to York Suburban,
include: Central York,
Marching Knights Flipping Over Flapjacks
The first Marching
Knights Pancake Breakfast
cooked up a successful
event. More than 360
people were served from
7 a.m. to 10 a.m. on Saturday,
May 15.
The breakfast was
timed to coincide with
the York County Special
Olympics, held at York
Suburban that day.
Under the direction
of the Band Parents, and
with the assistance of the
Administration, the planning
for the Pancake
Breakfast began several
months ago. Tickets –
priced at $3.50 each —
were printed and distributed
to all members of
the band and guard. A
percentage of the sales
were put into the
member’s account for
the upcoming trip to Hawaii.
On the day of the
event, students arrived at
5:30 a.m. to set up the
cafeteria. The doors
opened at 7 a.m. and the
flipping of pancakes began.
The Marching
Knights and Band Parents
express their appreciation
to everyone who
helped make the breakfast
possible and to those
who attended the event.
Plans are now under
way to hold another
Marching Knights Pancake
Breakfast this fall,
possibly in conjunction
with Band Day. Details
will be announced later.
Richardo Medina and Patti Markley work at the
griddle.
Jordan O’Reilly planned to eat 20 pancakes … and
he achieved his goal. Here he receives his final
plate of flapjacks from Ron Ehrhart.
York Suburban Marching Knights Director Rick Anderson is all smiles as he
joins his grandchildren for pancakes. Behind him are band members Andrea
Clabaugh, Jenn Markley and Gabby Searcy. A Tall Cedars clown joins in the fun.
Police Dog Visits Middle School
A highlight of a
recent Health Fair at
York Suburban
Middle School was a
demonstration by a
police dog trained to
sniff out illegal substances.
As students and
teachers sat on the
stage, Springettsbury
Township Patrolman
William Polizzotto,
Jr. demonstrated how
the dog could find
boxes hidden in the
auditorium.
The dog was
trained by Joseph
Burkey, Sr. of Burkenhaus
Kennels in
York.
The Health Fair
featured a number of
health-related organizations
which set
up areas inside the
gymnasium. Students
were given an
opportunity to visit a
number of the agencies
during the fair.
dog. The dog’s trainer, Joseph Burkey, Sr., is
were told not to dangle their feet from the
stage.
From Teaching to the Coffee
Grind at Central Market
York Suburban High
School teacher Stephen
Whiteley can be found in
his classroom during the
school day.
On weekends and
over the summer, you’ll
find him at Take Five
Expresso Bar inside
York’s Central Market.
“I discovered Take
Five Expresso when I
was on jury duty in January
of 2003,” Steve says.
“I absolutely hit it off
with Craig Chambers,
who was the owner. I
went back every Saturday
as a customer.”
Last July Craig
Chambers – who was a
York Suburban graduate
– died of a heart attack.
The future of the coffee
bar was in doubt. “We
were encouraged to purchase
it by the employees,”
Steve notes.
In September, Steve
and his wife, Sharon,
bought the business.
Sharon usually works
the stand on Tuesdays,
Thursdays and Saturdays
during the school year,
with Steve joining her on
Saturdays.
The Whiteleys’ two
children, Dan, 14, and
Emma, 12, are involved
in other activities and are
not involved with the
coffee bar.
Steve, who holds degrees
from Dartmouth
and the University of
New Mexico, is an earth
science, astronomy and
oceanography teacher at
York Suburban High
School. He admits he
was somewhat surprised
by what it takes to run a
business: “Regulations
… insurance …utilities
charges.”
“Central Market is
undergoing something of
a renaissance,” he notes.
“New vendors are coming
in. We’re optimistic.”
He adds, Central
Market is “a real gem. I
wish more people in
York would patronize it.”
