MINING ENGINEERING
STUDENTS
Take National Award
WVU mining engineering students have been recognized
for their community service and outreach efforts with a
first-place Outstanding Student Chapter Award from
the Society for Mining, Metallurgy and Exploration (SME).
Activities that helped the chapter garner this recognition
included visiting area high schools to speak to students about
careers in the mining industry; leading mining-related
activities during Eighth Graders Day at WVU, raising money
for Adopt-a-Family and victims of Hurricane Katrina; and
hosting an interactive booth at the annual Gem, Mineral, and
Fossil Show held in Morgantown last fall.

“Our overall goals are to give back to the community and to
help education people about mining and the mining industry,”
said chapter president Morgan Sears, a mining engineering
senior at WVU. Chapter members traveled to Denver to the
Annual SME Conference in February 2006 to receive their
award.
