MINING ENGINEERING<br />

STUDENTS<br />

Take National Award<br />

<strong>WVU</strong> mining engineering students have been recognized<br />

for their community service <strong>and</strong> outreach efforts with a<br />

first-place Outst<strong>and</strong>ing Student Chapter Award from<br />

the Society for Mining, Metallurgy <strong>and</strong> Exploration (SME).<br />

Activities that helped the chapter garner this recognition<br />

included visiting area high schools to speak to students about<br />

careers in the mining industry; leading mining-related<br />

activities during Eighth Graders Day at <strong>WVU</strong>, raising money<br />

for Adopt-a-Family <strong>and</strong> victims <strong>of</strong> Hurricane Katrina; <strong>and</strong><br />

hosting an interactive booth at the annual Gem, Mineral, <strong>and</strong><br />

Fossil Show held in Morgantown last fall.<br />

“Our overall goals are to give back to the community <strong>and</strong> to<br />

help education people about mining <strong>and</strong> the mining industry,”<br />

said chapter president Morgan Sears, a mining engineering<br />

senior at <strong>WVU</strong>. Chapter members traveled to Denver to the<br />

Annual SME Conference in February 2006 to receive their<br />

award.<br />
