Bikes for
Children
T
au Beta Pi, WVU’s Engineering Honor Society, teamed
up with Positive Spin, a Morgantown nonprofit
organization, to repair used bicycles and donate them
to Scott’s Run Settlement House, a charity that passed them
on to area children in need. Tau Beta Pi’s national office
began the project two years ago. At first, the students collected
bicycles and repaired them in their dorm rooms and
apartments.
“We had just about given up hope of getting any bikes done
last year,” said Heath Morris, president of the WVU chapter.
“We were all busy with projects and finals, and we lacked the
tools, work space, and expertise to get the work done.”
Tau Beta Pi member James Maley, an aerospace engineering
major, helped repair bicycles to give to children in need as part of
a service project last fall.
Morris then got a call from Positive Spin, a new non-profit
organization in Morgantown with the mission of making the
area more accessible to bicycling. Positive Spin offered Tau
Beta Pi’s student members the help they needed to get the job
done. The chapter collected and repaired several bicycles, and
donated them to Scott’s Run in December.
