<strong>WVU</strong> ENGINEERING AND MINERAL RESOURCES Volume 3 Issue 1<br />

2000s<br />

Don Edwards, IMSE ’01, wrote: “I am a<br />

U.S. Army captain, currently stationed at<br />

Fort Hood, Texas. I am the senior advisor<br />

to the brigade comm<strong>and</strong>er for all matters<br />

concerning chemical, biological,<br />

radiological, <strong>and</strong> nuclear warfare. I am<br />

grateful to the staff <strong>and</strong> faculty <strong>of</strong> IMSE<br />

for equipping me with the tools necessary<br />

to plan, resource, <strong>and</strong> execute training<br />

with the outcomes expected by my<br />

superiors.”<br />

Elyce Biddle, PhD OSH ’04, was<br />

awarded The International Association <strong>of</strong><br />

Industrial Accident Boards <strong>and</strong><br />

Commission’s (IAIABC) 2006 Samuel<br />

Gompers Award, in recognition <strong>of</strong> her<br />

“outst<strong>and</strong>ing efforts in improving working<br />

conditions <strong>of</strong> the masses.” The award notes<br />

that, “Elyce truly exemplifies the passion<br />

that Samuel Gompers had for improving<br />

the working conditions for the average<br />

industrial worker.”<br />

Preetanshu P<strong>and</strong>ey, PhD ChE ’06, was<br />

one <strong>of</strong> three recipients <strong>of</strong> the 2006 AAPS<br />

Outst<strong>and</strong>ing Graduate Student Research<br />

Award in Pharmaceutical Technologies.<br />

Dr. P<strong>and</strong>ey is employed by Shering Plough<br />

in New Jersey.<br />

1990s<br />

Gary Fleming, MSME ’93, is the<br />

assistant branch head <strong>of</strong> the Advanced<br />

Sensing <strong>and</strong> Optical Measurement Branch<br />

at NASA’s Langley Research Center. When<br />

he was a student at <strong>WVU</strong>, he participated<br />

in internship <strong>and</strong> fellowship opportunities<br />

with NASA.<br />

Phillip Burnside, PhD ME ’97,wrote:<br />

“My skills from <strong>WVU</strong> have led me on<br />

many great adventures around the world<br />

with the US Navy. I spent nine months in<br />

Baghdad working on sewer, water, <strong>and</strong><br />

electrical systems, as well as Iraqi police<br />

<strong>and</strong> army facilities. The US Army <strong>and</strong><br />

Navy have nominated me for the Bronze<br />

Star. I now work as a senior scientist for<br />

Rolls Royce in Indianapolis, designing new<br />

1980s<br />

John McCray, EE ’86, was named the<br />

director <strong>of</strong> the Hydrologic Science <strong>and</strong><br />

<strong>Engineering</strong> Graduate Program at the<br />

Colorado School <strong>of</strong> Mines.<br />

Min-ki Lee, PhD ME ’88, is a pr<strong>of</strong>essor<br />

at Changwon National University. He was<br />

the project leader at the Mechatronics<br />

Research Institute <strong>of</strong> Changwon National<br />

University, working on the development <strong>of</strong><br />

a robot designed to make harbor<br />

construction safer, dubbed “Stone Man.”<br />

He visited <strong>WVU</strong> recently with his family.<br />

1970s<br />

H.S. Muralidhara, PhD ChE ’77, was<br />

selected for the ACS Industrial <strong>and</strong><br />

<strong>Engineering</strong> Chemistry Award from the<br />

Spring <strong>of</strong> 2007. He was inducted into the<br />

<strong>WVU</strong> Chemical <strong>Engineering</strong><br />

Distinguished Alumni Academy in 2005.<br />

Paul Wielgus, BS ’77 MS ’79 (mineral<br />

<strong>and</strong> energy resources) was recently<br />

appointed vice president <strong>of</strong> NRG Energy.<br />

He resides in Georgia.<br />

1960s<br />

William Fourney, MSAE ’64,is<br />

associate dean <strong>and</strong> chair <strong>of</strong> the Aerospace<br />

<strong>Engineering</strong> Department at the University<br />

<strong>of</strong> Maryl<strong>and</strong>. Fourney received the<br />

President’s Medal from campus president<br />

C.D. Mote, Jr., the highest award bestowed<br />

by the University <strong>of</strong> Maryl<strong>and</strong>.<br />

Raymond Brace, IE ’67, intends to<br />

retire in May <strong>of</strong> this year as senior vice<br />

president <strong>of</strong> Global Operations at The<br />

Hershey Co., where he enjoyed a successful<br />

career since his graduation from <strong>WVU</strong>. In<br />

his retirement, he hopes to travel with his<br />

wife, Patricia, <strong>and</strong> spend time with his<br />

three children <strong>and</strong> four gr<strong>and</strong>children.<br />
