Safety and security are two of the most important issues in the world today. And the safest and most secure
vehicle in the world is the yellow school bus. And it’s not just the bus that makes for this achievement of
safety, but also the driver. Knowing the dangers surrounding the school bus and how to deal with those
dangers are what make for a safety conscious driver. And the safer the driver, the safer and more secure the
bus will be!
a few basics? Join a wide variety of adults from all
around the Lakes area to discover anew or for the
intermediate course is the continuation of “French a
la Mode” or for those who have a little bit of previous
knowledge of French. Learn more vocabulary,
culture, and even some travel tips in this course.
Instructor Bio: Allison Antoine was first introduced
to French the summer after 5th grade and fell in
love with it. When it was time to choose which
language to study in high school, she immediately
chose French as it was “by far the prettiest language
around.” She thought she would only study three
years of High School French, but after visiting France
for the first time between her junior and senior year
of High School, she was sold. She went to college
at Augustana College in Sioux Falls, SD where she
obtained majors in French, K-12 education, and a
minor in Spanish. She has been to France four times,
one of which was an extended study abroad period
in college. She worked at a French immersion camp
in college in northern MN and currently assists with
some translation work.
The Duke versus the Dude: A Comparison of Two Visions of “True Grit”
Films are the parables of our generation. Film makers put up on the screen their interpretation of life using
the tools of their trade. We sit in the dark and watch this vision unfold just like our ancestors who listened
to the ancient poets recite stories and legends in the darkness of mead halls. So why did Joel and Ethan
Coen decide to make a new version of the 1969 version of True Grit? After all, John Wayne was the ultimate
Rooster Cogburn. Part of the post 1969 generation, the brothers Coen use their film making ability to create
a 21st Century vision of the novel with Jeff The Dude Bridges as Rooster. This class will study both films using
material from the book Myth and the Movies, criticism of both films, and viewing each version of the film.
Course Dates: (Wednesdays) October 9, November 7, December 5
