The Duke versus the Dude: A Comparison of Two Visions of “True Grit”
Films are the parables of our generation. Film makers put up on the screen their interpretation of life using
the tools of their trade. We sit in the dark and watch this vision unfold just like our ancestors who listened
to the ancient poets recite stories and legends in the darkness of mead halls. So why did Joel and Ethan
Coen decide to make a new version of the 1969 version of True Grit? After all, John Wayne was the ultimate
Rooster Cogburn. Part of the post 1969 generation, the brothers Coen use their film making ability to create
a 21st Century vision of the novel with Jeff The Dude Bridges as Rooster. This class will study both films using
material from the book Myth and the Movies, criticism of both films, and viewing each version of the film.
Course Dates: (Wednesdays) October 9, November 7, December 5
Class Times: 9am - 12:30pm
Price: $25
