Minister’s Foreword,
Tasmanian Living Artists’ Week 2007
David is a painter fully grounded in
western art’s long history of classicism,
the tradition which runs from Botticelli
to Poussin, from Puvis de Chavannes to
De Chirico. He uses that artistic language
– that combination of figuration, narrative
and landscape – to describe Australia’s
shorter and sadder history of invasion and
ecological destruction. From the bleak,
denuded hillscapes of the 1990s, with their
isolated markers of civilisation – houses,
gates, dining tables, curtains – to the more
recent, richly–patterned treescapes of the
Narawntapu National Park, Keeling’s
work uncovers and expresses the beautiful,
tragic, surreal poetry of the Tasmanian
environment.
David is the subject of the latest Tasmanian
Looking Back. The fourth in the Tasmanian
Tasmanian visual artists, David Keeling: Looking
Forward, Looking Back is presented through
Arts Tasmania by the Minister for Tourism,
Arts and the Environment and is published
by Quintus Publishing, an imprint of the
University of Tasmania.
David’s work is held in many corporate,
private and public collections in Australia
and overseas including the National Gallery
of Australia, National Gallery of Victoria,
Tasmania Museum and Art Gallery and the
Tasmanian Living Artists’ Week celebrates
the visual arts in our community through a
state-wide program of events. From Friday,
24 August, until Sunday, 2 September,
Tasmania will be buzzing with plenty of
opportunities to meet with both established
and emerging artists. Some favourite events
are returning again this year, including
workshops, artist talks and gallery crawls
as well as the opportunity to savour some of
Tasmania’s regional produce by attending
one of the many food and wine events.
New to Living Artists’ Week this year is the
Local Connections exhibitions program.
Tasmanian Regional Arts has coordinated
22 exhibitions around the State featuring
the work of local artists.
Tasmanian Living Artists’ Week is a
biennial festival which is co-ordinated
by arts@work, the business unit of Arts
Tasmania. It would not be possible to
have an event of this scale without the
support of program partners including
Pure Tasmania, Hydro Tasmania,
Tasmanian Regional Arts and the
Tasmanian School of Art.
In 2005, over 700 artists participated in more
than 375 events in 45 locations, attracting
thousands of people to a huge variety of
venues across the state. This year over 400
event registrations have been received and
the number of participating artists has
grown to over 1000.
I encourage you to delve into this program
of events, make use of the easy reference
calendar at the back and then book your
tickets. Bookings can be made on-line at
www.artsatwork.com.au.
I look forward to seeing many of you at
this year’s events as we enjoy another
vibrant and dynamic Tasmanian Living
Artists’ Week.
Tasmania’s magnificent natural landscapes have always inspired the creativity of artists.
The island’s mountains, forests, rivers and coastlines are celebrated in oils, watercolours
and photography; in ceramics, fabric art and jewellery; and in bold sculptural forms.
Artists are drawn to the alpine wonderland of Cradle Mountain; to the azure water and
pink granite of Freycinet; and to the ancient forests and wild rivers of the West Coast.
These places inspire us, too – at Cradle Mountain Chateau, Freycinet Lodge and Strahan
Village, you’ll find a warm Pure Tasmania welcome.
Come and see the places that inspires our living artists – and experience for yourself
the living landscapes of our island.
arts@work and the Australia Business Arts Foundation, with the
endorsement of KPMG Tasmania, are proud to launch ‘artists@work’, a
pilot program of residencies linking Tasmanian artists with Tasmanian
businesses, between now and December 2007.
The residencies are about exchanges of ideas and experiences in which
artists, businesses and their employees benefit. Our participating artists
are incredibly multi-skilled; used to exploring disciplines that are not
conventional subjects for art, and that fall outside their own area of
expertise. Our participating businesses thrive on challenge and are
committed to achieving success through creativity and innovation,
and all recognise the importance of retaining and valuing staff.
The 2007 artists@work include; Greg Leong at Zinifex Rosebery Mine
and Lucy Wilson at Moorilla Estate, Berriedale
Textile and photomedia artist Greg Leong
will work at the Zinifex Rosebery Mine.
This residency will celebrate community,
and the company that makes the survival
of the community possible. It will pay
homage to the people of Rosebery and their
spirit in a rugged environment. Greg Leong
will collaborate with people who work at
the mine, their families, and people from
the community, creating a multi-layered
account of the company and community
vision of what mining activity means to
the West Coast. Greg will interview and
photograph mine workers and will research
the company archives.
greg leong
at zinifex rosebery mine
Together with mine workers, their families
and other residents, Greg will present a
public event with digitally imaged portraits,
a soundtrack built from interviews as well
as the sounds of the workplace, and live
performances by participants. A DVD will be
created as a lasting record of the project.
Zinifex owns and operates two mines
both in Australia: Century Mine, a large
open cut zinc and lead mine in northwest
Queensland, and Rosebery, an underground
zinc, lead, silver, gold and copper mine on
the west coast of Tasmania. The Rosebery
ore body was discovered in 1893 by a
prospector, Tom McDonald. The area was
mined by several different operators until
1921 when Rosebery and the nearby Hercules
Mines were purchased by EZ Industries
Limited. The current operation was
commissioned in 1936.The mine produces
around 700,000 tonnes of ore each year.
Zinifex believes in working cooperatively
with local communities.
LUCY WILSON
AT MOORILLA ESTATE
Artist and animateur Lucy Wilson will
work at Moorilla Estate, collaborating
with staff to mix the familiar experience
of operating a winery and brewery
with a process of creative exchange and
inspiration. Rather than bottling wine and
beer, Lucy will work with Moorilla staff to
bottle their imagination. Using movement
and writing exercises, as well as working
with materials and processes found on
site, they will capture their stories, fears
and fantasies in bottles. This process will
give everyday materials and activities new
and different meaning, with a focus on
encouraging creativity, improvisation,
trust and collaboration in the workforce.
There will be a corking event and the bottles
will be sealed, labelled and constructed
into a “bottled time piece” which will be
ceremoniously set in place on the premises,
to be opened at some point in the future.
Moorilla Estate is dedicated to the
enjoyment of life. Founded as a winery in
the 1950’s, Moorilla Estate is the birthplace
of Tasmania’s modern wine industry.
Moorilla has since evolved into a cultural
haven that draws visitors from around the
world to sample award-winning Tasmanian
wine, beer, food, art, accommodation and
music. Website: www.moorilla.com.au
From the fishing port of Currie on King Island to the southern
cape of Bruny – Tasmania’s network of islands entice and inspire
artists from across the globe. In mining towns, rural hamlets,
shack communities; perched on hillsides and shorelines miles
away from anyone, hundreds of creative hands and minds have
come together in Tasmanian Living Artists’ Week 2007 to celebrate
regional creativity through Local Connections.
Identity and place loom large on the Local Connections canvas
which stretches across the boundaries of geography, art form and
experience. And never in Tasmania’s history have more than 400
artists representing such diversity so embraced an idea – to take
part in a single exhibition in 22 spaces that communities claim as
their own.
Local Connections
Tasmanian Regional Arts and arts@work have, with the support
of Local Connections’ sponsor Hydro Tasmania, shared the vision
for engaging regional artists in this new Tasmanian Living Artists’
Week initiative. Featuring 22 prominent local artists whose work
is understood locally and recognised throughout the state, Local
Connections has provided a virtual showcase of Tasmanian talent.
Our feature artists are also sharing their insights and expertise in
exhibition floor talks throughout Tasmanian Living Artists’ Week.
So wander through this marvellous program then dedicate an
hour, a day or every day of Tasmanian Living Artists’ Week to a
Local Connections exhibition near you. At the very least, enjoy the
work of artists who are your neighbours, colleagues or peers and
drop along to your community’s local exhibition. Keep an eye on
your local newspaper for a sneak preview.
Image: Cat Skins
Getting things on and off an island is
difficult, so Robyn Eades uses materials
on hand. Tanning wallaby and possum
skins came from seeing carcasses wasting
along the roadsides and cat skins followed
a feral cat trapping project by the NRM.
Fur has such voluptuous and tactile
qualities that it needs very little
ornamentation and chance combinations
can have surprisingly delightful results.
Robyn’s home is full of stuff gathered from
tips, roadsides and clearing sales. Some
things inspire her own creations and she
finds good homes for the rest.
Feature Artist – Kerry Martin
Image: Sky Wings, Lake Lea (detail)
The skies are integral to the compelling
melancholy and isolation of Lake Lea
– swiftly moving clouds that break away
to brilliant light. Over a year working there,
the lake constantly changed; the water level
rose and fell; the sedges and shrubs changed
their colour from burgundy to rusty–lime.
There’s a sense of isolation and ‘otherness’
I’ve tried to depict through my colour
choice of moody blues, use of chiaroscuro,
and a classic composition devise of a dark
foreground; forcing the eye to follow beyond
the shadows into the light
Feature Artist – Rod Westbrook
Image: Beyond the Light (detail)
Devonport Photographer Rod Westbrook’s
images have been described as a new form
of art. Suffering from Spina Bifida may
have limited his mobility but not his desire
to develop his own style of Wilderness
Photography. Working in his custom
designed darkroom Rod’s work still relies on
traditional photographic processes. Inspired
by the Tasmanian Wilderness, Rod focuses
on the smaller things found within nature
with their intricate symmetric patterns,
rich colours and textures emphasizing
the curves, lines, opacity, transparency,
refracting as the light passes directly
through the subject material stimulating
the viewer’s imagination to interpret the
images in their own way.
this series build on and utilise the shared
experience of Tasmania’s past to describe
and inform the modern Tasmanian and
Feature Artist – Penny Burnett
Image: The Edge (detail)
Penny Burnett’s work explores perceptions
of truth and landscape when confronted by
the spectacular sea caves and ever–changing
coast on the Tasman Peninsula. Penny’s
work is about making a connection
to natural forms and allowing the
vulnerability of an unedited response.
It’s this intuitive trust and internal
fragility, with references to expressionism
and the romantic understanding of a vast
world, that allows the creation of a sense
of moment, purpose and beauty. Penny
believes that being part of a group show
with other Peninsula Artists is a wonderful
opportunity to see multiple interpretations
of our common link: love of beauty and
this place.
Caroline Amos moved to Tasmania from
the raging energy of the landscape and
Tasmania’s tumultuous history she
decided to live here permanently. Whilst
integrates them with charcoal drawings.
Caroline often uses her own photographic
essays of a specific area to collate a
Kempton
Feature Artist – Jenny Topfer
Image: Midlands Winter (detail)
Jenny Topfer’s work draws from her
experience of the landscape and the
changing seasons in the Southern
Midlands, where she lives. Her paintings
use the horizon lines that delineate land and
sky, mountains and fog as visual metaphors
for our relationships with ourselves and
each other. Many of the paintings are
physically divided, reinforcing the idea
of relationships and duality. The surfaces
of her large, abstract canvases are layered
and reworked many times each, creating a
worn and scarred surface that references the
land as well as our own bodies. Jenny is a
member of her local Regional Arts branch.
Early this year Helen Demczuk developed
and exhibited a series of portraits of
West Coast women titled Painting Women.
same artists, titled Women Painting. Also
The Young Archies
Modeled on the famous Archibald Prize,
and attracting hundreds of entries,
The Young Archies Awards is an exciting
program presented as a part of Education
Week with the support of The Department
of Education. The Young Archies Awards
is open to government school students
from kindergarten through to year 12, with
awards being offered in grade categories,
for the best portraits of a person.
On display at the Tasmanian School of Art
during Tasmanian Living Artists’ Week,
The Young Archies Awards is a great
opportunity to view the work of Tasmania’s
up and coming artists.
The range of approaches to the portrait
theme is very broad; Picasso and Modigliani
always prove to be a popular influence in
many works, whilst others show great
experimentation in different mediums such
as oils, acrylic and collage.
The subject matter varies from self
portraits to parents, friends and teachers,
whilst compositions range from the more
traditional poses, to the subject gardening,
cooking or walking.
Overall, the standard of the work in the
exhibition is outstanding and well worth
a visit. The launch of the exhibition and
Presentation of Awards will be on Friday 10
August at 7pm; and the work will remain on
display until the last weekend of Tasmanian
Calendar of Events
This year not only can you book most of your tickets on-line at www.artsatwork.com.au
but we’re delighted to include a calendar of the key events to help you to plan your own
Tasmanian Living Artists’ Week experience. To get the most out of your week,
we recommend you experience a food and wine event, stop off at some of the many
free exhibitions taking place around the State, jump on board for a Gallery Crawl and
soak in an artist talk or workshop.
For full details on the below events, please turn to the referring page number. Please note
that most of these events require a booking.
