‘From Below’
The artist explores the seeming dichotomy
between ‘feminine’ and ‘masculine’
identities in the Twenty-first Century.
A tension is drawn between ideals of beauty
and strength depicted through a classically
‘masculine’ pose for the female figure.
Boulders on Mt Mayson II
Coastal Tasmania is of great importance to
Joanna Dean. It is a place she has grown
to know and deeply appreciate. Joanna’s
painting, using vibrant colour and line,
portrays her strong connection to a place
of rock and sea.
Old Growth Thylacine
A sculpture of a Thylacine, sitting,
contemplating the future. The surface of the
animal is coloured with earthy yellow ochre
tones, and imprinted with ferns coloured
with oxides. Explores the idea of man’s
impact on the landscape.
Intention II
Intention II explores the conduit between
mind and body. Subtle constructs of the
mind such as intention, memory and
dreams are given form. Overlayed on the
body, these forms communicate the layering
of experience that we indelibly carry
with us.
“If you talk to the animals they will talk to
you and you will know each other. If you do
not talk to them you will not know them,
and what you do not know you will fear.
What one fears one destroys.”
