What better time for a night hike through the Albany Pine Bush Preserve? Walk with us along the trails without light and test your sense at night. Saturday, December 22 Program on Evergreen Trees at Five Rivers: A field study of the natural history of evergreen trees will be conducted at 10 a.m. at 56 Game Farm Road, Delmar. Evergreen trees provide many animals with food, nest sites, shelter from the weather, and protection from predators. On this outdoor foray over gentle terrain, center staff will lead a tour of selected evergreen stands at Five Rivers. Participants will learn about the ecological and economic importance of evergreen species commonly used for seasonal decoration such as pine, spruce, and fir. Participants will learn basic tree identification tips. The impact of invasive forest pest species will be discussed. This program is open to the public free of charge. Program on Winter Wildlife at Five Rivers: A family-oriented field study of wildlife adaptations to winter will be conducted at 2 p.m. at 56 Game Farm Road, Delmar. On this outdoor foray, center naturalists will lead a search over the meadow and through the woods, looking for tracks, dens, chewed cones, and other seasonal signs of wildlife use. The three common winter survival strategies will be discussed. This program is open to the public free of charge. Parents and children must accompany each other. Call 475-0291 for more information. Sunday, December 23 Suburban Sounds Community Chorus Holiday Concert at 2 p.m. at the Guilderland Public Library, 2228 Western Ave., Guilderland, featuring sacred and secular carols, ancient and modern. Long Time Courting, a Boston-based Celtic quartet — from left, Shannon Heaton, Sarah Blair, Liz Simmons, and Valerie Thompson — will give an Old Songs concert on Friday, Jan. 6, at 8 p.m. The concert will be held at 37 South Main St. in Voorheesville. Join us for a 30-minute introduction followed by a 60-minute outdoor trek to look for clues and evidence of what lives in the Pine Bush. Our trek will be on snowshoes if enough snow is available. Thursday, December 27 Family Program on Beavers at Five Rivers: A family-oriented program on the American beaver will be conducted at 56 Game Farm Road, Delmar, at 2 p.m. During this indoor/outdoor study, Five Rivers staff will present an elementary overview of the natural and cultural history of this fascinating rodent through crafts, games, and showand-tell artifacts. Wish it Would Snow-shoe Walk at Thacher Nature Center: If wishing makes it snow, we’ll take a snowshoe walk on the trails at 10 a.m. Try out your new snowshoes or borrow a pair of ours. Friday, December 28 Birding for Kids Program at Five Rivers: A children’s introduction to birds and bird life will be conducted at 56 Game Farm Road, Delmar, at 10 a.m. At this indoor/outdoor program, center naturalists will discuss concepts and bird anatomy, behavior, identification, and conservation, which parent and child can build upon in their own yard or park. Participants will study birds at the center’s feeders from indoors, then venture out along center trails for a little field work. Simple, but effective backyard bird conservation strategies will be discussed. This program is free of charge, but enrollment is limited. Parents and children must accompany each other. Call 475-0291 to register. Snowshoe Adventure: Have you tried the sport of snowshoeing? The Albany Pine Bush Preserve is a great place to get started with this fun sport. Join us for a one-mile hike on snowshoes. We’ll explore the frozen landscape of the pine barrens and gain a basic introduction to snowshoeing. Snowshoes will be provided to program participants. B’nai Sholom offers Yiddish classes B’nai Sholom Reform Congregation in Albany is offering two courses for those who want to learn about and speak Yiddish. Classes for advanced beginners and advanced Yiddish classes will be held Wednesday evenings starting Jan. 9. All classes are held at B’nai Sholom Reform Congregation at 420 Whitehall Road in Albany. The courses introduce students to the Yiddish language by using both a textbook with accompanying instructional media and the teacher’s own experiences as a Yiddish speaker. It will run for eight Wednesdays, from 6:30 until 7:30 p.m., starting Jan. 9. The advanced class will be geared to those with a working knowledge of the language. It runs right after the beginner class, from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. Both courses are taught by Rachel Weitz, an Israeli native speaker of Hebrew and Yiddish who teaches both languages in the Capital Region. Weitz holds a master’s degree in Jewish education and a bachelor’s degree in modern Middle East history and Arabic language and literature. The Yiddish courses are open to the public. The fee for each is $55 plus cost of the required textbook and CDs or tapes. Registration is required. Students may register for a class at any time. The required textbook may be purchased after the first day of class. Ithacapella returns to Guilderland GUILDERLAND — Ithacappella, an all-male a cappella group from Ithaca College, returns to Guilderland Central School District this January. The Guilderland Music Department, with funding from the Guilderland Music Parents and Friends Association, will host two elementary assemblies and a middle-school clinic with Ithacappella on Friday, Jan. 4.
