Advised that the AFL-CIO is running radio ads throughout the district of Representative<br />
Casperson criticizing the Escanaba legislator for voting to close Newberry and Camp<br />
Manistique.<br />
Distributed reports on the state budget fight in Lansing. MCO has generated of 5,000<br />
letters to state legislators over the Newberry and Camp Manistique closings. Also urging<br />
legislators to close the privately run prison in Baldwin. MCO generated media attention to<br />
these budget driven closings, in newspapers radio and television. We are partnering with<br />
labor organization and various coalitions to increase public support. Also advised that<br />
Earned Media is targeting media on MCO's issues.<br />
Scott Fischer discussed the majority party's proposal to assess a prisoner store surcharge to<br />
pay for a state trooper school. He also reported on his recent tour of Cotton.<br />
Andy Potter reported on the activities of the Joint Labor/Management Health and Safety<br />
Committee, his visit to Camp Koehler, and plans for the August 26th Crisis Fund golf<br />
fundraiser.<br />
John Ost reported that the Uniform Committee will meet on July 19, 2005 and asked for input<br />
from the board.<br />
Cary Gross reported on her tour of Cotton with Scott Fischer. She inquired about steward<br />
training and was advised by the chair that training will be conducted after the September<br />
elections.<br />
Scott Fischer reported that a member, upset over the inadequacy of his retirement plan,<br />
incorrectly believed MCO was to blame, when it was Governor Engler and the majority<br />
party that legislated these changes in the state's retirement plan over the protest of all<br />
state employee unions. And it is the majority party that still today refuses to reconsider its<br />
decision.<br />
Adam Douglas discussed issues at the Scott Correctional Facility regarding gender based<br />
assignments and advised that the chapter will be meeting on July 16th.<br />
Mike Taylor reported on the activities of the MCO Scholarship Committee and presented its<br />
recommendations to the board for scholarship awards. Motion by John Ost to adopt the<br />
recommendations of the committee. Supported by Ray Sholtz and MOTION CARRIED.<br />
The 2005 scholarship recipients are: James Snyder, Kurtis Monroe, Jordan Mason,<br />
Anthony Pope, Lacy Gregg, Amanda Moore, Ashley Kivela, Jamie Salinas, Rebecca<br />
Wagner, Michael Morgan, Jason Johnson, Rachel Bertucci, Kelly Reid, Patrick Marnell,<br />
Kristi Henricks, Jamie Thompson, Alanna Hartley, Peter Dezelski, Stephen Sannery and<br />
Amy Coucke.<br />
As there was no further business, motion was made by John Ost to adjourn. Supported by<br />
Cary Gross and MOTION CARRIED. The meeting stood adjourned at 3:50 p.m.<br />
