field. <strong>The</strong> man stops dumbfounded when he sees the head.<br />
Bows. <strong>The</strong>n races away to tell the village the tale.<br />
-- Word travels quickly, and the inhabitants of Kira’s<br />
village are all waiting when the ronin crest the r<strong>is</strong>e. <strong>The</strong><br />
peasants approach O<strong>is</strong>hi’s men as they pass. <strong>The</strong> men mutter<br />
words of thanks. <strong>The</strong> women openly weep. <strong>The</strong> children touch<br />
these new heroes in awe.<br />
Even the warrior monks in their blood-red robes bow in<br />
reverence as the ronin pass.<br />
-- And so it goes, all the way across the countryside.<br />
Moved by their tale, villagers line the roads in greater and<br />
greater numbers to watch O<strong>is</strong>hi and h<strong>is</strong> men pass. Giving them<br />
offerings of food. Water. Helping them walk.<br />
-- Chikara stumbles, and a hand reaches out to lift him up.<br />
It <strong>is</strong> the FRUIT VENDOR and h<strong>is</strong> DAUGHTER who scolded him in<br />
Edo. <strong>The</strong>y help him up, then bow down in reverence. Th<strong>is</strong><br />
gesture of respect gives Chikara the strength to continue on.<br />
-- When they reach Ako, they are surrounded by familiar<br />
faces. Shamed faces. <strong>The</strong> BURLY VENDOR who spit on O<strong>is</strong>hi<br />
beseeches him for forgiveness.<br />

I’m sorry. I’m so sorry. I didn’t<br />
know... How could I know?<br />
Others appeal to Hazama, Basho, Isogai for having thought<br />
them honorless.<br />
O<strong>is</strong>hi’s wife, too, <strong>is</strong> in the crowd. She and O<strong>is</strong>hi and<br />
Chikara meet eyes.<br />
But the <strong>47</strong> ronin do not stop, and do not reach the end of<br />
their pilgrimage until they arrive at:<br />
EXT. SENGAKUJI TEMPLE - DAWN<br />
<strong>The</strong> gravesite of Lord Asano...<br />
As they enter the sacred place, Mika goes to H<strong>is</strong>ae, who hugs<br />
her tight as her mother would. And as Mika begins to weep<br />
with weariness and relief, PAN AROUND to watch the ronin<br />
doing what they have literally moved mountains to do.<br />
O<strong>is</strong>hi reverently washes Kira’s in the cool water from the<br />
temple well. <strong>The</strong>n places the tyrant’s head and the dagger<br />
with which Asano and Kira both took their lives atop h<strong>is</strong><br />
master’s grave.
