1 Introducti<strong>on</strong><br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>Age</str<strong>on</strong>g>ing societies influence the development <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> industrialised countries. A<br />

changing age compositi<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> the populati<strong>on</strong> not <strong>on</strong>ly affects pensi<strong>on</strong> and social<br />

security systems but also the infrastructure, housing market, available<br />

workforce and c<strong>on</strong>sumpti<strong>on</strong> patterns (Sachverständigenrat 2011). Though<br />

demographic change proceeds slowly, it has nevertheless c<strong>on</strong>siderable influence<br />

<strong>on</strong> ec<strong>on</strong>omic growth (Internati<strong>on</strong>al M<strong>on</strong>etary Fund 2004). <str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g> study<br />

at hand aims at investigating the c<strong>on</strong>sequences <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> ageing for aggregate c<strong>on</strong>sumpti<strong>on</strong><br />

and different c<strong>on</strong>sumpti<strong>on</strong> purposes. <str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g> life-cycle theory started<br />

by Fisher (1907, 1930) and enhanced by Ramsey (1928), Modigliani and<br />

Brumberg (1954) as well as Ando and Modigliani (1963) examines the relati<strong>on</strong>ship<br />

between c<strong>on</strong>sumpti<strong>on</strong>, saving, age-pr<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>ile and ec<strong>on</strong>omic growth.<br />

Since then many empirical studies were mainly subject to life-cycle saving<br />

(e.g. Mass<strong>on</strong> et al. 1998, Horioka 1997, Deat<strong>on</strong> and Paxs<strong>on</strong> 1994). <str<strong>on</strong>g>Age</str<strong>on</strong>g> and<br />

c<strong>on</strong>sumpti<strong>on</strong> – being the counterpart <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> saving – were inter alia explicitely<br />

addressed in Erlandsen and Nymoen (2008), Attfield and Cann<strong>on</strong> (2003),<br />

Fair and Dominguez (1991) and Heien (1972). <str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g>ir findings show that aggregate<br />

c<strong>on</strong>sumpti<strong>on</strong> expenditures are affected by the age structure <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> the<br />

populati<strong>on</strong>.<br />

Following the approach <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> age group coefficients in the estimati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

c<strong>on</strong>sumpti<strong>on</strong> this study assesses the influence <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> the single age groups <strong>on</strong> the<br />

amount spent for different c<strong>on</strong>sumpti<strong>on</strong> purposes in Germany. It shows that<br />

the coefficients refering to the age structure are significantly different from<br />

zero c<strong>on</strong>firming that the distributi<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> the age groups am<strong>on</strong>g the populati<strong>on</strong><br />

matters for the total amount c<strong>on</strong>sumed. This means that during the lifecycle<br />

a private household adapts its c<strong>on</strong>sumpti<strong>on</strong> behaviour to the actual<br />

habits and needs as well as the income situati<strong>on</strong>. C<strong>on</strong>sequently, demographic<br />

change induces changes in the c<strong>on</strong>sumpti<strong>on</strong> patterns and affects the demand<br />

for c<strong>on</strong>sumpti<strong>on</strong> purposes. <str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g> estimati<strong>on</strong> results are used for a stand-al<strong>on</strong>e<br />

projecti<strong>on</strong> to quantify the impact <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> demographic change in Germany. <str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

values are compared to a baseline not explicitely c<strong>on</strong>sidering age in the<br />

estimati<strong>on</strong> process. On the aggregate the projecti<strong>on</strong> does not reveal the<br />

complete impact <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> an ageing society. <str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g> difference between projecti<strong>on</strong><br />

and baseline is rather small. But going into more detail the differences<br />

become obvious. Summarising, age should be c<strong>on</strong>sidered when c<strong>on</strong>sumpti<strong>on</strong><br />

is analysed. As the c<strong>on</strong>sequences have opposed effects depending <strong>on</strong> the<br />

c<strong>on</strong>sumpti<strong>on</strong> purpose disaggregated informati<strong>on</strong> is to be preferred.<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g> paper is structured as follows. In the next secti<strong>on</strong> the data <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> the<br />

Household Budget Survey is evaluated. <str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g> differences in the c<strong>on</strong>sumpti<strong>on</strong><br />

expenditures by age groups give a first impressi<strong>on</strong> what to expect from the<br />

estimated age group coefficients. Secti<strong>on</strong> 3 is about the estimati<strong>on</strong>. First,<br />

the data basis is described (secti<strong>on</strong> 3.1) followed by the estimati<strong>on</strong> procedure<br />

(secti<strong>on</strong> 3.2) and the results (secti<strong>on</strong> 3.3). <str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g> coefficients then are used in<br />
