Note: "Individuals, Tribal Communities, and the Native American Novel" − The notion of the modern self−made and autonomous individual stands in contrast to tribal forms of subjectivity. In tribal
societies, the individual is understood in relation to a social whole that gives him/her meaning. This course examines the troubled history of individualism in Native American communities, as that history
is represented in novels by Native writers. We will examine the relationship between novels and modern individualism, and the vexed place of those European cultural artifacts in Native America.
Note: "Tribal Archaeology" − This course focuses on Native American archaeology and issues surrounding its practices both in contemporary research and in cultural resource management. In
particular, students will become familiar with the various ways that Native American peoples are using archaeology to carry out the kinds of research that matters most to them and to create programs to
preserve their own heritage resources, graves and sacred places.
